It is estimated that 1/3 of all adults in the US are caregivers or caring for an individual/family member. The National Council of Catholic Women established the RESPITE program in 1982 in response to a National Council On Aging initiative called, “Volunteerism in Action for the Aging.” With Gospel values of compassion and service to others clearly the foundation of the program. NCCW members have supported and assisted families caring for elderly family members at home for more than 16 years. This RESPITE ministry program is designed to temporally renew the caregiver and teach volunteers “How to communicate God’s love” to the family member who is ill.
