Sept 1, 2002 22nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME On this Labor Day weekend we are reminded of the dignity and beauty of work. In the beginning God is pictured as a worker, creating the world and fashioning man from the clay of the earth. God, the Potter. Later the Bible reveals that Jesus was known as the carpenter's son, and He worked at that craft. Adam and Eve were told to subdue the earth; humankind was to share in God's care of the earth. The "mastery" over the world that God offered the human race was realized above all in the human person himself: mastery over self. Part of that mastery is precisely to arrive at that spot where we see work as a good thing. That great truth aside, this Labor Day we should give thanks for the country in which we live. Human labor is rewarded, and our system provides the dignity of labor to so many millions. Not everyone who would want a job has one, and that means there is more work to do, because everyone who wishes to work has the natural right to a job from the day the Creator-God gave a job to our first parents.
