I encourage students to do the following for each and every lesson:

1)  Take excelellent notes during class and ask questions when/if confused or lost.   Actually attempt the 
example problems and make sure you understand them.
2)  Put effort into finishing the homework.  Look at examples from the book and notes to help, and be     sure to check the odd answers in the back of the book.
3)  Star any homework problems that  you couldn't get correct and ask to see them done the next day.
4)  Correct homework in class the next day; it should be 100% correct by the end of hwk time.

Other general tips:

1)  Keep all notes and homework organized in the binder so that it becomes an excellent study guide. 
2)  Ask for help before too many days pass. 
3)  Do not be afraid to ask questions during class!  Many kids are wondering the same thing.
