Grade 5 Class Room 30 at 104 W. Dorothy Ln., Kettering, OH 45429 US - Our Reading Program

Our Reading Program

Our end of the quarter bingo celebration was enjoyed by the students who attained all of their reading goals for the first quarter.  Those goals were to finish the required number of contracts and book projects, as well as maintain at least an 85% AR average.

All students have received their second quarter reading goals.  A copy was also given to parents at conferences or will be sent home this week with your child.  The turn-in deadlines will be posted on my calendar.

This year our reading program is all about different genres.  Biography, fantasy, adventure, animal fiction, humor, folktale/legend/myth, realistic fiction, science fiction, historical fiction, nonfiction, and Newbery award winners to be exact.  The children will be completing genre contracts which include an AR test score, graphic organizers, and end of the book projects.  The contract requirements will be determined from the genre of the book being read and the level of the ability of each child.

Students should be able to complete their genre contract graphic organizers in class.  These will be kept in their reading folder in my classroom.  Two end of the book activities will be presented to the class each quarter.  These projects should be copmpleted at home.  Each child has their own Genre Passport and quarter goals.  Every time a genre contract is successfully completed, a sticker will be added to that page of the passport. There will be a Bingo party with prizes at the end of the quarter for all students who meet all of their goals.  The genre contract basically works like this:
  • The student chooses an AR book in his/her reading range or a leveled reader book in a certain genre.
  • He/she sets up a genre contract with me.
  • He/she reads the book.
  • He/she takes the AR quiz.
  • He/she completes the genre contract, turns it in for a grade, and gets a passport sticker.
  • Two times a quarter he/she completes an end of the book project to present  to the class.

We also read a different story each week  in our Tresures reading book in class and study vocabulary related to that story.  In addition, every student reads a short leveled reader.  We meet in small leveled groups to discuss content, vocabulary, and new literary devices.

Please make sure your child is reading about 30 minutes every evening.  I will also give them time to read silently in class on a daily basis.
