Available Tutoring in the Language Arts

Students who have difficulty with any skills in Reading and Language Arts are offered the opportunity to receive individual or small group help from me during recesss or during "Flex" periods. This help is available for students who need clarification regarding the novels we are studying in class, for those needing to strengthen their comprehension skills, and for those having grammar, mechanics, or usage difficulty in English or in Spelling/Vocabulary.

"Comprehension Boosters" are short reading selections that I have chosen to develop various areas of the students' comprehension. "Language Ladders" are short quizzes that I have developed to check the students' understanding of individual skills in grammar, mechanics, and usage.  Anyone who scores below 75% on a Comprehension Booster or a Language Ladder is strongly encouraged to seek extra help during recess or "Flex" periods. 

Please note that this assistance is optional. I am looking for students to demonstrate a personal desire to learn, which is noticeable when students responsibly use the extra help that has been made available to those interested in taking advantage of it. I am always impressed with the many students who are responsible by choosing to give up some of their recess or "Flex" time for comprehension or for grammar, mechanics, and usage help. These students show me that their desire to learn and develop skills in the Language Arts is genuine.

During our tutoring sessions, students who demonstrate a better understanding of any skills on Comprehension Boosters or Language Ladders that had previously given them difficulty will be rewarded.  Not only will these students benefit by gaining a stronger understanding of skills, but they will also have their original low grade averaged together with the improved grade that was earned from the extra help.  Parents are made aware that their children have asked for help on skills with my recorded notes in the comment sections of ProgressBook.
