Syllabus Reading the Old Testament 5 week general overview course at the Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More Fall ‘04 by Mark Clow mrc02f@fsu.edu Objective: To introduce the Laity to the general historical background, and life application of the Hebrew Scriptures. Monday Oct. 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, Nov. 1st 7-9 p.m. in Library at St. Thomas More. Text: New American Bible Oct. 4th Week 1 Introduction to Old Testament. Basic Historical, Literary background. Canonization History, Hebrew, Greek Manuscripts. (BHS vs. LXX) Differences between Catholic, Hebrew and, Protestant Bibles Breakdown of Literary Genres contained with the Old Testament. Oct. 11th Week 2 Pentateuch (Torah), 5 Books of Moses Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy Oct. 18th Week 3 Historical Books (Major Prophets, Writings) Joshua Judges Ruth 1 & 2 Samuel 1 & 2 Kings 1 & 2 Chronicles Ezra/ Nehemiah Tobit Esther Judith 1 & 2 Maccabees Oct. 25th Week 4 Wisdom Literature Job Psalms Proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of Songs Wisdom of Solomon Sirach Nov. 1st Week 5 Prophets (Major & Minor) Isaiah Jeremiah Lamentations Baruch Ezekiel Daniel Book of the Twelve Wrap-up and Conclusion Introduction to additional sources Discuss benefits of language studies Feedback for interest in deeper look at OT sections or OT depth overview.
