Welcome to The Diocese of Covington
Easter 2013
My dear Friends,
“On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’” (Jn 20:19)
Disillusioned, distraught, discouraged the Apostles of Jesus had locked themselves away in fear. Their Lord, the one in whom they had placed their trust, the one who was to set them free, the one who they believed was from the Father, was dead and buried. And these, the closest followers of Jesus, feared that they would be next.
What a marvelous sight Jesus must have been to them and how wonderful to hear those comforting words “Peace be with you.” Jesus did not take them to task, He did not chide them, He did not scold them for deserting Him in His hour of need. No, He wished them peace!
In our own lives we can sometimes be brought low and can so easily and readily become disillusioned, distraught and discouraged. We can be tempted to retreat in fear and hide. And yet, it is precisely at these moments in life that we need to refocus our attention on the Lord, on His goodness to us, on His commission to us to reach out to others in His Name. We cannot hide behind closed doors and keep this wonderful message of peace to ourselves. Our faith in the Lord should be seen and shared. Our lives should radiate the joy the Apostles felt on Easter morn. The Lord is risen! He has conquered death! He has conquered sin! He has been victorious over the grave! With good news like that how can we be silent!
I take this opportunity to wish each of you a truly blessed Easter. May the gift of peace that the Lord so willingly gave His Apostles give you strength for the journey. May God bless you and those you love.
Yours devotedly in the Lord,
Most Reverend Roger J. Foys, D.D.
