No change.
Ms. Laird shared information she had gotten from Pittsburgh and Indiana. Dr. Bowman mentioned he has material from all Indiana dioceses. Discussion continued on funding and how diocese might support. Dr. Bowman discussed changes in staffing over the years, esp. due to decreasing finances. Final decision was to examine other diocesan plans, formulate a plan, then address funding.
Final points suggested:
- best approach to Bishop is individuals addressing personal stories
- re-evaluate points from synod meeting
- look into colleges and organizations for assistance
Article was in The Messenger November 5th about criteria for the Inclusive Education award. Ms. Rechtin has an article in United Ministries Newsletter. Article has also been placed on website.
Mike Quigley initiated discussion on criteria in regards to repetition. After much discussion was agreed to keep as is except to add "and school community" to criteria 5.
Note criteria: High schools, elementary schools or parish programs of religion nominated should:
- Provide services for children with special needs.
- Have a program showing significant commitment to children with special needs.
- Follow diocesan policy and guidelines, when initially enrolling, or continuing the enrollment of, children with special needs.
- Show evidence of successfully providing services to meet the needs of children with special needs either in the schools or in parish programs of religious education.
- Publish the desire to provide services to children with special needs in the parish and/or school community.
Dr. Bowman will send a letter to principals and DRE's. Deadline for nominations is January 15.
Tabled for next meeting.
Discussion of resource book:
Jan Ankenbauer offered to work with Kathleen Michels on information form and follow up. Points to add:
- request response regardless of any changes
- request specifics on what accessibility for handicaps is available
Suggestion was also made to investigate having resource information on the webpage.
Michael Quigley reported that instead of being available at just two schools, the therapists would be traveling to 6-8 different schools to meet the needs of Kenton County residents.
MaryAnn Grimm wondered why Justice and Peace did not mention persons with disabilities in their article. She also suggested committee might research TMC and NKU for juniors or seniors to help in schools with needs. Ms. Rechtin suggested contacting Judy Kinman, Campus Ministry at TMC and in charge of service.
Motion to adjourn at 5:30 p.m. by Mary Kay Laird; seconded by Anita Dunn.
The next meeting will be held at the Catholic Center on Thursday, December 9th, 2004, at 3:45 p.m. in Rm. 339.
