Members present: Ms. Mary Ann Grimm, Ms. Stephanie Rechtin,Ms. Anita Dunn, Phil Gessner Staff: Mr. Michael Quigley, Ms. Eileen Messer, Kathleen Michels, Dr. Larry Bowman
Excused absences: Kelly Halpin, Ms. Jan Ankenbauer Meeting opened with prayer by Stephanie Rechtin at 3:55 p.m.
Addition of Mary Kay Laird to excused absences at the December 9 meeting. Restated information on the Individuals with Diabilities Act (IDEA) changes to read: "This legislation means public school districts would be servicing children based on their school attendance rather than children’s residence." Motion to approve by Mary Kay Laird; seconded by Sister Mary Francis.To the May minutes was added a statement concerning the Synod and the Church's position on persons with disabilities.
Kathleen Michels shared the most recent statement showing a balance of $679.31. Mary Ann Grimm reported getting a donation of $500.00 from Barbara and John Bonar.
Discussion of Messenger article to highlight schools. Dr. Bowman mentioned The Enquirer's being interested in highlighting elements in Northern Kentucky schools.
General discussion on deadline and number of awards. Phil Gessner reminded the committee that the award was established to honor programs and to bring awareness. A decision was made that if schools met the criteria, with evidence in support, they would receive the award. Mike Quigley will mail copies of the nominations on January 18. Committee members are to e-mail their thoughts by January 24.
Mary Kay Laird reported talking with Fr. Cleves regarding special education needs. He is working to get her an appointment with Bishop Foys or Fr. Michael Due.
Mention was made of a workshop on Legal Issues on February 28, as well as one on Down's Syndrome May 19-21.
