Education Committee
Department of Education
May 9, 2007
Thomas More College, 3:45PM
Mary Kay Laird opened the meeting with prayer at 3:50.
Tabled approval of minutes for April until the next meeting.
Mike Quigley shared the Committee’s finance sheet.
Discussed the award and whether it is being used as originally planned. It was intended to encourage and acknowledge all schools demonstrating success in Inclusive Education, not to encourage a competitive environment. We discussed the possibility of including an article in the Messenger on a quarterly basis to highlight a success story at individual schools. There is a need to follow up with further discussion at next meeting.
Teacher Breakfast
Teachers want to meet every other month beginning in October. The meetings are going well and are well attended.
Doug Lonneman is heading this up. Working to develop forms, guidelines, terms and alternate learning plans. We discussed the need to work with the principals to help them accomplish their goals and make sure we are in alignment with each other.
We also discussed the need for a special education coordinator for the diocese and ways to fund it, such as grants, collections, etc. Dr. Zahler suggested meeting with the Bishop and illustrating the progress made to date, the obstacles schools face and how a coordinator could help overcome these obstacles. Also briefly discussed were the responsibilities this person would have, and the pros and cons of a part time versus full time position. We need to follow up with more discussion and tighten up our thoughts regarding this topic.
Next meeting is May 24th at Covington Latin School and will have the second reading of the 6000 series policies. Mike Quigley suggested Mary Kay or Jan should attend.
Date to be determined. Mary Kay and Jan will meet in June and review the past year and plan for the upcoming year. Mary Kay motioned to adjourn and Sr. Francis seconded. Meeting was adjourned.
