Mike Quigley opened the meeting with prayer at 3:50. MaryAnn Grimm announced that member Carol Maschinot had died.
With the addition of MaryAnn Grimm to excused absence, motion was made to approve by Sr. Mary Francis, and second by Mary Kay Laird.
Mike Quigley shared the Committee’s finance sheet. With the addition of a donation from the Ft. Wright Civic Club of $100, there is a balance of $3871.11.
Ms. Laird reported the presentation went well. St. Joseph School invited her for a visit. She suggested the committee might look into visiting schools. Discussion continued on how to form the award presentation to eliminate any element of competition. Sister brought up that the original plan was to recognize schools and/or programs that were extending inclusion. A final suggestion was perhaps a form giving us information and schools be highlighted by committee through Messenger articles. Ideas were tabled until later with everyone encouraged to give thought to best practices and changes that could be made.
Teacher Breakfast
Discussion continued on the value of an inclusive education directory and the need to update. Also discussed putting information on the Schools website. Dr. Bowman suggested that Laura Kenner might be the person to update the website. He said to send minutes, etc. to Mike Quigley and he could get them to the correct person. Future ideas would be a blog and use of a distribution list. It was suggested to ask teachers what form they would prefer.
No news on progress toward a mission statement or forms for high schools.
Dr. Bowman shared the process for speaking to the board and asked if the committee had a specific plan for its presentation. He also explained the policy review process. Mary Kay Laird asked if anyone with inclusive education experience is on the board. Dr. Bowman also explained that guidelines come from the Department after the policy is approved. He felt they would certainly use those presented by committee members as they were very well written.
General discussion of policy, need for training, and need of documentation. Mary Ann Grimm asked if the forms would give opportunities for accommodations on entrance tests. Jan Ankenbauer and Barb Zahler reported that other documentation could be used for that purpose.
Mary Kay motioned to adjourn and Sr. Francis seconded. Meeting adjourned.
