Marydale Retreat Center at 945 Donaldson Hwy, Erlanger, KY 41018 US - The Idea of a Retreat

The Idea of a Retreat

In the early centuries of the Church, men and women fled to the desert to find a place for prayer and meditation away from the distractions of the world.  Later, they built monasteries and convents which became spiritual refuges as well as training grounds for many of those we celebrate today as saints.

While the world has changed considerably, the requirements for a sound spiritual life remain constant; time for quiet reflection, rest, relaxation and prayer.

Modern Christians see their work as essentially carrying the message of the Good News to all who will listen and in serving one another's needs, especially the needs of the poor.  Today this mission is usually carried out within the context of everyday family life and in the marketplace.  While it can be challenging and exciting, it can also be exhausting.

Jesus, when he lived and walked with those he loved, often took time apart from his work to fast and pray.  He invited his followers to do the same.  Therefore, it is important for us to take some time out of our busy lives to reflect on who we are - really are - and to pray that the Holy Spirit will bestow on us the gifts we need to live in accordance with the Gospel.

A retreat could be the vehicle needed to insure continuing spiritual growth.  It can be a time of rest and relaxation as well as a time of commitment and challenge.  It can afford us an experience of inner peace and joy.  It can and should be that step forward into a new awareness of the action of God in our lives.

The question we must ask ourselves is - can we afford not to make a retreat?
