Bishop Brossart High School closes to stem flu spread

ALEXANDRIA — The principal of Bishop Brossart High School, after consultation with the diocesan Department of Catholic Schools and the Northern Kentucky Health Department, decided to close the school for four school days beginning Sept. 22 in an effort to slow the spread of the flu, possibly H1N1 (swine flu), in the student population. Richard Stewart, principal, said Sept. 22 in a published report that between 65-70 students, out of a total enrollment of 368, were absent Sept. 21. It was not known how many were confirmed cases of H1N1 flu. Classes are scheduled to resume Sept. 28 but in a letter to parents, Mr. Stewart said he would remain in contact with diocesan officials and the health department as he decides on a return date. During the dismissal period teachers will post assignments on the school Edline weblink (accessible through www.bishopbrossart.org); all school activities were cancelled for the week, including all sports practices and competitions. The letter also outlined suggestions to parents to reduce the spread of the flu and other infectious diseases. For more information about H1N1, visit www.flu.gov or the Northern Kentucky Health Department, www.nkyhealth.org.
