MARCH FOR LIFE
The Pro-life Commission and the Knights of Columbus sponsor this annual bus trip to our nation’s capital to commemorate the January 22nd Supreme Court Decision that made abortion legal. Each year we have a large number of people from our diocese, especially students, who attend the March in Washington D.C. The students experience a combination of inspiration, education, fellowship, and fun.
EIGHTH GRADE ESSAY CONTEST
During October, Respect Life Month, the Pro-life Commission and the Department of Catholic Education promote our Eighth Grade Essay Contest in the grade schools. Participation in this contest provides students with an opportunity to reflect on the Church’s teaching concerning the sacredness of life from conception to natural death. Members from the Pro-life Commission are available to make classroom presentations in order to help students prepare their essays.
ESSAY AWARDS BANQUET
Our Essay Awards banquet honoring the top 20 contestants of our Eighth Grade Pro-life Essay Contest is held in March. Parents, teachers, and principals are invited for this special celebration with Bishop Foys to announce the Third, Second and First place winners.
HIGH SCHOOL SPEAKER
Every year, the Pro-life Commission and St. Elizabeth Women’s Wellness offer a speaker for our high schools on the topic of Chastity and Abstinence.
MESSENGER PAGE
We Choose Life is a monthly page in our diocesan newspaper, "The Messenger" featuring timely articles and information concerning life issues. If you are not currently receiving The Messenger, call Faye Roch at (859) 392-1570 or e-mail, froch@covingtondiocese.org.
RESPECT LIFE PROGRAM MATERIALS
These materials are published by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and are distributed throughout the diocese by the Pro-life Commission to Pastors, Pro-life school contacts, Directors of Religious Education, and Parish Coordinators in preparation for Respect Life Month in October as well as use throughout the year. The materials are sent to all parishes and schools in the diocese.
DIOCESAN PRO-LIFE MASS
Bishop Foys provides everyone in our diocese an opportunity to come together during the Month of October, Respect Life Month, to show our solidarity for all life, and to celebrate and pray as we work together to build a culture of life. Regional Masses, celebrated by Bishop Foys, are also offered in March and June at various churches.
SPIRITUAL ADOPTION
This program is designed for grades 1-8 to educate children about the humanity and the development of the pre-born child. The program’s main component is to encourage schools to pray for the health of the baby (grades 1-4) and the life of the baby in danger of abortion (grades 5-8) through a special prayer that is said everyday in the classroom.
DAY OF REFLECTION
A Day of Reflection is held each August to provide Pro-life Commission members as well as Parish Pro-life Coordinators and Pro-life Teams time together to revitalize our spirits, regroup our pro-life efforts and renew our dedication for the cause of life in our diocese and community.
PROJECT RACHEL
Project Rachel is a confidential reconciliation and healing ministry for post abortive women and men. Presently, Project Rachel is a support group of four to eight women participants that meets for eight sessions. These sessions usually take place twice a year. In 2004, the Pro-life Commission initiated an outreach program for men who have been affected by an abortion experience. This outreach provides community awareness about the need for healing for men as well as women. Our confidential Project Rachel phone number is (859) 392-1547.
