Diocese of St. Petersburg at 6363 9th Ave N, Saint Petersburg, FL 33710 US - Fortnight for Freedom

Fortnight for Freedom

On April 12, the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a document, "Our First, Most Cherished Liberty,” outlining the bishops’ concerns over threats to religious freedom, both at home and abroad. The bishops called for a Fortnight for Freedom, a 14-day period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom, from June 21-July 4. The Diocese of St. Petersburg joined dioceses nationwide to highlight the importance of defending our religious freedom.

The bishops of Florida have released a statement in support of the Fortnight for Freedom. You can read it in English (PDF) or Spanish (PDF).

Bishop Lynch celebrated a special Mass in recognition of the Fortnight for Freedom on Friday, June 29, 2012, at 7:30pm at St. Paul Catholic Church in Tampa. All were invited to attend. Video of Bishop Lynch's homily is below. You can read his homily by visiting this blog post or by clicking here to read a PDF copy. Photos from the Mass can be seen in the slideshow below or by clicking here.

All parishes throughout the diocese have been asked to ring their church bells at noon on July 4, 2012, as part of a national initiative. Parishes have also been asked to consider having a special Mass or to focus their existing celebrations on the Fortnight for Freedom. As information on any individual parish celebration of the Fortnight of Freedom becomes available, it will be posted here.
