OPERATION RICE BOWL

Operation Rice Bowl is the Lenten solidarity program of Catholic Relief Services. Just as we celebrate the Eucharist on Sundays, we can use Operation Rice Bowl throughout Lent as a way to “break bread” together with family and loved ones. We join in the traditional practices of Lent and pray as a community, fast in solidarity with those who are hungry, give concrete assistance to those most in need, while we learn about the joys and challenges in the lives of our brothers and sisters around the world. Where does the money go, you ask?... 75% of your contributions to Operation Rice Bowl support Catholic Relief Services’ development projects overseas and Lenten education activities in the United States. 25% of your contributions remain in your diocese to fund local hunger and poverty alleviation programs. Contact your local CRS Diocesan Director or visit http://orb.crs.org to learn how the 25% is used in your diocese. Catholic Relief Services provides assistance on the basis of need, not creed, race or ethnicity. Please be generous in the time of great need locally and worldwide.

SEASON OF LENT

The Season of Lent is a journey in which we are called to walk with Christ through his
suffering. Almsgiving calls us to compassion for our brothers and sisters who are less
fortunate. In feeding the hungry and clothing the naked we are Christ to one another in our time.

The number 40 is representative of the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert battling the temptations that strove to keep Him from His earthly ministry. We, too, battle temptations throughout the season of Lent; a season marked by self-examination and repentance. Fasting reminds us of our need for Christ-our hunger and thirst also represents Christ’s suffering in the desert and calls to mind how empty we would be without Him.

The deep purple color that fills the Church during Lent symbolizes Christ’s suffering and death. However, because purple is also the color of royalty, it foreshadows Christ’s kingship and resurrection. At Easter, the liturgical color changes to white to represent Christ’s victory over death and the hope that, one day, we will all share His
resurrection at the heavenly banquet.

“There is no surprise more magical than the surprise of being loved. It is God’s finger on our shoulder.”
