| History of Holy Family School |
Groundbreaking for Holy Family School began in March of 1951 under the direction of Father Daniel O'Donaghue. School Sisters of Notre Dame began arriving at the school site in the summer of 1951. Sister Mary Kostka would become the first principal of the newly forming school. In September of 1951, Sister Kostka, along with Sister Loretta Marie and Sister Catherine, took up permanent residence in the parish hall. The school officially opened in September 1951 offering classes in grades one through eight. The School Sisters of Notre Dame were solely responsible for the teaching at the school until 1977. Since that time, the school has been staffed by dedicated lay people committed to their faith and focused on continuing the tradition of excellence begun by the sisters. In 1984, kindergarten and extended day care programs were added. Our preschool and computer programs were established in 1985. Portable trailers now house our kindergarten and computer programs. The present arrangement of classrooms and facilities has been the same since the spring of 1999. In the fall of 2001, a 6 to 6 Extended Care Program was granted by the city of San Diego. Linda Vista's central location in the city of San Diego, with its easy access to all freeways, allows our school to be available to commuting families as well as local residents. Our present school population is 248 students. 75% of Holy Family students are parishioners, 13% come from other parishes, and 12% are non-Catholics. Linda Vista is home to many ethnic groups that allow our school to be wonderfully multicultural. Linda Vista is also home to a large military population. The numerous cultures represented in our families, the various faith affiliations found in our school, and the wide range of economic situation, make for a beautiful blend of all of God's people, and teach our students valuable like skills of tolerance, acceptance, and understanding. This blending of people, faiths, and life situations promotes an environment where each student can practice and live out the Gospel values. The high quality of education at Holy Family School, and our emphasis on the Catholic faith, Christian morals, and community service, has truly made an impact on our school families. Loyalty to our school is obvious as a second and third generation of families is presently enrolled at our school.
