The real journey to open the bookstore began in September of 2002 when Don's position of more than 17 years with Marsh Supermarkets was eliminated, and we, like so many others in corporate America suffered the loss of our livelihood.

Recognizing for sometime that Don's position was in jeopardy, we had prayed intensely about the path we’d follow regarding the opening of the bookstore. We put the situation totally in the hands of God one day while in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel’s perpetual adoration chapel.  Even though we had great disappointment when Don lost his job, we had an exhilarating sense of peace. God had been patiently waiting and now we were ready.

We needed some practical direction in business matters and got a lot of help when we attended a seminar on retail store development in Indianapolis sponsored by Christian Booksellers Association during the group’s national conference. We also attended the National Conference of the Catholic Marketing Network in Chicago, which offered both educational and spiritual seminars to help us center our intentions and prepare to open our new business.

Once we were clear on the direction of the business, we began looking for a home for our bookstore.  The space we were led to had previously been a jewelry store and needed virtually no remodeling. We knew God’s hand was in finding the right space, since we'd looked at this shopping center several times and hadn't even noticed this perfect starter location until the timing was just right.  Since then we've moved into a larger space within the same shopping center, thanks to our loyal customers.

We’ve always envisioned a Catholic bookstore that would be a source of solid Catholic books and materials for anyone who is seeking the authentic Catholic Church teaching.  We carry a large selection of great Catholic books, Bibles, Papal documents, as well as religious articles and giftware, framed art, jewelry, stationery, music and videos, adding titles almost daily.

We also take the Gospel out into the world by our presence at book fairs, parish missions, retreats and various conferences as an integral part of our apostolate.  We only hope and pray that we always seek and act on God’s call.

Holy Family Books & Gifts is located in The Centre strip mall on Rangeline and 116th Streets in Carmel. If we don't have what you need, we are always willing to order for you, as well as ship to your location.
