DINNER FOR EIGHT
HOLY FAMILY CHURCH
Frequently asked Q &A:
WHAT IS "DINNER FOR EIGHT?"
Dinner for Eight is a "social ministry" group of Holy Family parishioners who want to meet other parishioners to promote fellowship, friendship, & the breaking of bread (literally) together.
WHO CAN ATTEND?
Couples, Singles, Younger, Older & in between (> 21 yrs old)
WHAT IF I AM NOT PART OF A COUPLE?
Singles will be matched up with other similar singles so no one feels left out! (Not a dating service…..) Singles diners may be matched with other single diners, as well with people who have lost their spouse, or may not be married.
HOW ARE GROUPS SELECTED? ARE GROUPS DETERMINED BY AGE?
Registrants select which age group they would like to be paired with. Age groups are (<35) (36-50) (51-65) (> 65) (or ANY age group). Some people like being with others their own age & interests, while others like cross generational dinners. Group requests will generally be accommodated depending upon the number of applicants each year.
WHAT ABOUT CHILDREN?
At the present time, D-4-8 is for adults & there should not be children at the dinner. However, some times there may be children in the home, but their presence should not interfere with the evening.
WHEN DOES D-4-8 MEET?
D-4-8 meets 4 times per year, usually in October, January, March & May, but the times are entirely group dependant. Most groups meet on a day of mutual agreement, often on a Saturday evening, but if the group prefers to meet during the week or earlier in the day, it is entirely up to YOUR individually assigned group to decide. Dates are "suggested dates" only.
WHERE DOES D-4-8 MEET?
Generally the dinners meet at a group member's home. There are 8 people assigned to each dining group. Two singles can pair up & choose to meet at one or the other's home / apartment. The in home dining allows for a more relaxed setting in which members can get to know their fellow diners & share who they are.
DO I HAVE TO HOST?
Yes…each group of 2 (a Couple, 2 siblings, 2 friends, 2 singles, etc ) will host ONE dinner at their home. Two singles can decide to host at the larger home in their "couple" for example or couples can host more than one dinner if the group agrees.
HOW MANY TIMES DO I HOST EACH YEAR?
Once per season / year.
WHAT IF MY HOME IS NOT BIG ENOUGH TO SEAT 8 PEOPLE ALL AT ONCE?
You put all the food on a counter & everyone can sit around your living room & eat. Or if your apt. bldg. has a community room, use that. Or pair up with another group member to host at their house. Folding tables can be added to the main kitchen / dining room table if necessary. Get creative—it is not about the furniture, it is about the fellowship & friendships that form.
IT FANCY OR CASUAL?
Casual or fancy---your choice. Paper plates work in a pinch too---picnic style!
HOW LONG DOES EACH DINNER LAST?
Dinner gatherings usually last about 2-3 hours max.
WHAT IF I DON'T COOK?
Co-ordinate with your group to see if you can buy your item "ready-made" at a grocery or buyers club warehouse store.
CAN WE MEET AT A RESTAURANT?
Yes...if your group would rather "eat out" that is OK. Everyone should go "Dutch Treat".
ARE THERE RECIPES PROVIDED?
Yes. Each of the dinners has a complete menu packet.
DO I HAVE TO FOLLOW THE RECIPES?
Preferably, however if the group agrees, other recipes can be used.
WHO COOKS WHAT?
Each person brings a portion of the dinner so no one person is over burdened with cooking! Here's how:
The host of the month (couple #1) makes the Main Entrée & 1 Side Dish & provides for beverages (coffee, tea, soda, wine or beer if desired).
Couple #2 brings the Salad & Bread
Couple #3 brings the Appetizer & Vegetable
Couple #4 brings the Dessert
Each subsequent dinner, everyone shifts up one position: the second month's dinner host becomes COUPLE #1 & makes the main entrée. The previous Couple #1 drops down to couple #4 position & then brings dessert. See appendix #A at end of this document for this year's menus
WHAT IF I HAVE SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS?
No problem…we ask about any allergies or special needs during registration & let the other members of your group know about them. One advantage of the entire group having the same recipe packet is that you can preview the menu & look for any issues you may have with the menu & consult with your group members to substitute or delete items as necessary. Care should be taken if members substitute a recipe & to check with their fellow diners before serving non menu items, just in case of special needs / allergies.
CAN I INVITE ANOTHER COUPLE IN ADDITION OR AS A REPLACEMENT OF A COUPLE WHO IS NOT A MEMBER OF D-4-8?
While the group hopes to grow their friendships during the D-4-8 season, it may be awkward if a new couple is brought into the group without the group's consent. Check with your fellow diners……..it is all about flexibility!
WHAT IF I CANNOT MAKE A SCHEDULED DINING DATE?
Groups usually select their next dining date before dessert is served so all members may reserve the future date for all to participate.
Lives are hectic & emergencies do arise & dates may be rescheduled if necessary, but courtesy is requested to respect everyone's commitment to the program.
DO THE SAME 8 PEOPLE STAY TOGETHER FOR A SEASON / YEAR?
Yes…the same 8 people will dine together for a season of 4 dinners. This allows friendships to be formed during the season. The following year, registrants are paired with others in their selected age groups, which allow a participant to meet 7 more people each year they participate in the program. The more years you attend the D-4-8 program, the more of your fellow parishioners you'll get to meet!
WE LIKED OUR GROUP MEMBERS FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR SO MUCH….CAN WE STAY WITH THEM THE FOLLOWING YEAR?
The intent of the program is to meet more people from the parish so members are rotated each season / year. Occasionally several years later groups may overlap with previous year members, depending on the pool of participants.
