A Parable of Modern Choice Logic
|
Chris had up a full head of steam as he drove into Monica's apartment parking lot. He was going to make her see things his way. He had thought it through, talked to experts, and was ready for this conversation. He was prepared. He would convince her.
As Monica opened the door, he started talking as he walked in, determined to be heard.
"Monica, this doesn't just involve you, and you are going to listen to me. I have rights in this whole decision process, and I am not going to have my life turned upside down because you are stubborn. You are not going to have this baby!"
Monica cocked her head to one side, put her hands on her hips, and said, " Is that so? So you have rights. And you don't want your life turned upside down? And you think I am going to listen to your "college graduate, I've got a good job, and I'm not ready to settle down self " tell me what I am going to do with my baby? You haven't thought through anything. You're a pathetic excuse for a man. You're just a boy walking around in a man's body with a suit and tie, shiny shoes and a new car."
Chris waived off her response and walked around the room. "Monica, you are going to listen to me. First of all, it is not your baby, because it is not anybody's baby. It is just tissue in your body. Now is the time to terminate the pregnancy. It is a matter of choice and you must make the right choice. "
Monica looked straight at and through Chris. "That's the best you got? You are pathetic. It is a baby. It stopped being "body parts" the moment the "body parts" came together. That "tissue" as you call it has a heart that is beating, limbs being formed, a brain that is functioning, and I am not going to kill a baby for your convenience or peace of mind.
Where do you get the word terminate? Sounds better than kill doesn't it? And choice? Did you say it is my choice? You are wrong, Chris. There are some things to big for a person to choose. You think because something can be legally chosen, it can be chosen? What happened to you? How did you get like this?"
Chris became more animated. "I am a realist, and you are supposed to be a feminist, a strong woman, able to make tough decisions. If it were a baby it could live independent of you. You know it can't do that. What if it's not healthy? What if you can't provide for it? Do you expect me to provide for a baby, it's not even a baby right now, that I didn't want? I know we talked marriage but later. There are a lot of people that are very smart people who will tell you, Monica, "Every baby should be wanted and every baby provided for." You are being selfish and stubborn and thick headed and this baby could pay a terrible price for your stubbornness."
Monica let out a smirk. " I really expected better Chris. If you think you can argue me into an abortion, you better bring better than this load of #!*/!. Let's see. First, you're a realist. No doubt about your connection to reality. You can see it in your logic. "This doesn't fit into my plans. Kill it." Such a realistic grasp of life! Who's next? A baby allowed to live pays a price, but a baby you kill doesn't pay a price?
And I am a strong feminist woman, but in case you don't know it, I don't have to demonstrate it by killing a child for my convenience. You don't know anything about feminism. The Feminist Movement started protecting women, children and unborn children. And from who? Men who thought they were property and tissue.
Second, it is true that the baby cannot live outside my womb right now. So what? Guess what Chris? He or she will not be able to live independent of his parent until he is in his twenties. Look at you for instance. You may have been out of your mother's womb, but you are only recently out of her care, and you're twenty-four! You are arguing geography, Chris. In the womb, out of the womb, still a child.
And what if it isn't perfectly healthy? What? We just kill the ones that may not be perfect specimens? What is perfect? Or we prefer a different sex baby? You think that is the plan Chris? We choose life and death based on what? Where do you get this stuff? "
Monica continued, "What was your other point? Every baby ought to be wanted and provided for? So let me get this right. If I can't provide for him, and you won't provide for him, our only logical choice is to kill him? Oh Chris, you are brilliant. And all those people you are talking to, they must be brilliant too. Yes that certainly makes sense, doesn't it? If we cannot provide for him, let's just kill him.
What if we had a six year old that got sick, or we lost our jobs. Would we just say over dinner one night, " We really wanted healthy children, or, Well times are going to be tough, let's just kill the kid." No Chris, the option is not killing the baby.
There is a choice, but the choice is keeping the baby after birth, or finding some parents who will provide a home for my baby. I may be inconvenienced, but I will not kill a child. And I will make that choice, when it is time.
You have some really smart friends Chris, if they think that keeping a baby and going through birth is selfish and somehow punishes the child, but killing the baby so I won't be inconvenienced is smart and somehow protects the child. If I really want to do what's best I kill him? Where do you find such smart friends? "
Chris had never sat down, and now started for the door. "I really thought you were smarter than this Monica. You are thinking a hundred years ago. It is a simple procedure. It ends the whole issue. You just go on with your life, I go on with my life, no complications. Think about it, Monica. It is the best way."
Monica started walking towards the door, opened it, and pointed to the parking lot. "Chris, I may have loved you once, I may still love you, but asking me to kill an innocent child for your peace of mind is 100%, totally out of the question.
Don't worry about me, and don't worry about supporting the baby. I am sure you can find a lawyer somewhere that can insulate you from taking responsibility for fathering a child. And Chris, it was a child you fathered, not tissue.
Out! Don't call me, don't write me, don't send telegrams or flowergrams, don't e-mail me. Move on Chris. You're not fit husband or father material. And Chris, about all those plans for the future, "Bite Me". Never going to happen."
When Monica closed the door on Chris, she was shaking, and felt more alone then she had ever felt.
What Chris could not have known was that her family, her fellow workers, her boss, and even a few well meaning friends had delivered the same lecture to Monica over the last few days. Monica had made her choice. But now what???
When everyone you know, love and respect, suggests abortion, where do you turn to choose life?
Monica's courage and conviction must be supported.
Expectant mothers everywhere that have a "Chris" in the background of a pregnancy need to know there are those who will support their courage to choose life.
