Basics of Catholic Living (pdf)
So as to insure and safeguard the integrity of our Blessed Lord’s Real Presence in the Sacrament of Holy Communion, we ask that everyone participating in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, follow the directives below:
- ANY BAPTIZED CATHOLIC desiring to receive Holy Communion must be properly disposed to do so, meaning that they have the Catholic understanding of the Sacrament, be free of serious/ mortal sin and be in a state of grace. Any Catholic not in conformity with this requisite predisposition, should refrain from receiving Our Blessed Lord in the Eucharist. Rather, such a person is encouraged to remain in their place in prayer and meditation, or present oneself for a blessing and a self reflective prayer of “spiritual communion”.
- The CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN properly disposed for receiving Holy Communion, should approach the Eucharist with an appropriate gesture of reverence ( a bow or genuflection, etc.), then, if receiving in the hand, extend one’s hands palms up, one on top of the other, giving the proper response “Amen” (meaning, I truly believe it!) to the Minister of Communion’s declaration : “The Body of Christ!”. Then, reverently receive the Sacred Host in the top upturned hand, take one step to the side, securely take the Host from the top upturned hand with the fingers and thumb of the cradle hand and IMMEDIATELY CONSUME THE SACRED HOST BEFORE< RETURNING TO YOUR PLACE IN THE PEW.If the communicant prefers receiving Communion on the tongue, one must indicate this by placing their hand together in a prayerful way and extending one’s tongue to an extent that permits the Minister of Communion to easily and safely place the Sacred Host upon it.
- ANY BAPTIZED CATHOLIC CHILD who has not received one’s First Confession and/or First Holy Communion, is NOT eligible to receive Holy Communion but is welcome to receive a blessing.
- NO CATHOLIC LAY PERSON, unless specifically commissioned by the Bishop, is permitted to give Holy communion to another person, or to self communicate.
- NON – CATHOLIC CHRISTIANS AND NON – CHRISTIANS are most welcome to join us in the celebration of God’s Word and in liturgical song and prayer. At Communion time, however, they should remain in their places for meditation and prayer, or, if they so choose, come forward for a BLESSING ONLY
