Baptism of Infants
(includes children 5 years of age and under)
Judy Myers               (559) 434-7701 ext 101

  • A parent or guardian must request baptism for their child.

  • Both parents must attend the preparation class

  • There must be a founded hope that the child being baptized will be brought up in the Catholic religion

  • Godparents must attend a Baptismal preparation class, either here at Holy Spirit or through another Church

  • There must be at least one Godparent, who is a Confirmed, practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.  If they are married, must be married in the Catholic Church.  You can have two godparents, one being male and the other female.  A non-Catholic may stand up with the parents at the Baptism, but their name will not appear on the certificate.  They will be considered a "Christian Witness".

  • Children are encouraged to come dressed in a white garment to the baptismal ceremony

  • A special Baptismal candle will be furnished by the parish to the family of each child

  • Baptisms ordinarily take place in the parish church unless for extreme necessity such as illness

Baptism for Children Six Years and Older
 Religious Education Office (559/ 434-3522

The Religious Education program at Holy Spirit offers a course called Family Centered Catechesis (FCC) for children and families of children who are the age of six and older who have not yet received the Sacrament of Baptism. Children baptized in another Christian community and desire to become a Catholic must also attend the FCC program to prepare them for a Profession of Faith. The course is six weeks long and offered twice a year: once in the fall, and once in the spring. Children attend the class with members of their household to learn about the Roman Catholic faith from Deacon John Zimmermann and his wife Dee. At the end of each course a baptism ceremony or Profession of Faith is scheduled.

Registration information and a calendar of class availability can be obtained in the Religious Education office. If you have any questions, please call 559-434-3522.

First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion
Religious Education Office (559) 434-3522

Preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist is a two-year program at Holy Spirit Church. Children can begin their pre-sacramental preparation in the First Grade (information about sacramental preparation classes for older children and teens is listed below). Pre-sacramental and sacramental preparation includes learning the foundations of the Catholic faith, the Church and Prayer.

Children no younger than grades 2-3 who have completed their pre-sacramental year with good attendance will advance to the sacramental year program. This year builds on what the child learned in the pre-sacramental class, and prepares them for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. In keeping with Diocesan guidelines, children must have reached the age of reason (7 years of age or older) before they are able to make their First Reconciliation or First Communion.

Children who are older than seven years of age or in junior/senior high are placed in a preparation program with their peers. Please call the Religious Education Office for specific class days and times.
