OPPORTUNITIES AT HOLY SPIRIT PARISH

BEST OF POLAND & PRAGUE WITH FR. ERIC, sign up to visit Warsaw, Krakow, Prague, Munich and the Passion Play of Oberammergau with Fr. Eric. $4,299 from San Francisco. 11 days, August 4-14, 2010. Brochures are in the parish office and the Narthex with much more information about this trip. If you have questions, plese call the parish office 434-7701.

The Passion Play at Oberammergau
In 1633 the Black Plague rampaged through Europe. It killed 100 villagers in Oberammergau. The elders in the town made a promise to God that they would enact the Passion of Christ every ten years until the end of time if He would spare the rest of the villagers from the plague. From that hour, all villagers have been spared from plague deaths.

Most of the 5000 villagers take part in the five-hour musical drama that follows the last five days of Jesus’ life from the time He entered Jerusalem until His crucifixion
and resurrection. The 2010 performance includes spoken dramatic text and opera-style singing backed by a full orchestra and chorus.

IIS ANYONE AMONG YOU SICK?

If you (or a family member) have a medical emergency, please contact the
Spiritual Care Dept. of the hospital you are in. There is always a priest on call. Please
inform our office also so that we are aware of any illness in your family and able to
serve the sick person in whatever capacity is needed.

Please help yourselves to the pamphlets that are available in the Narthex of the Church, “Catholic Sacraments In Times of Illness.” Sacraments should be requested when a patient is first aware of serious illness. A family, friend, or loved one should not wait until death is imminent and the patient is unconscious to call a priest for the first time.

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is specifically oriented toward those who are ill. It often aids physical healing and always offers spiritual strength during illness.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO DONATE WITH AN ENVELOPE?

There will be times when your church attendance might be important to document (receiving a family discount at a Catholic School, permission letters to marry at another church, sponsorship
for baptisms and confirmation, etc).

The most common way for us to document regular attendance is by looking under contributions. A Holy Spirit offertory envelope is easiest for us to post since it shows your name and family number. If using loose checks we take copies, then look for your family number in order to post. If you donate with cash, we have no way of knowing who it came from unless it is placed in an envelope with your name. If you are not registered with the parish it is really important to do so.

You may print a registration form here or there is a registration form on the bottom of the parish bulletin After the form is completed, it can be mailed or dropped in the collection basket. If you are registered, the parish office will send you an annual statement of your contributions, which you can use for tax purposes. All contributions are important, no matter the amount.

Marriage Validation

Catholics are obliged to be married in the Church before a Catholic Ordained Minister (Deacon / Priest) and two witnesses. In these hectic times in which we live, many couples,
for reasons known only to them, fail to get married in the Church. It could be that one is non-Catholic and they marry in a Protestant Church, or they decide to go to Tahoe,
Reno, or some other place to get married.

Then, for years they are deprived of the right to receive Holy Communion.
What can they do about it? The answer is simple. They can have their marriage validated (sometimes called blessed) in the Catholic Church. To do this, call the parish
office and ask to speak to Sharon, 434-7701. She will set up an appointment for the couple to come in and begin the process.

The marriage can be validated in a simple, private ceremony in the Catholic Church. Then the couple will be free once again to receive Communion. What a great reward!
(If you have had a prior marriage, the process will be somewhat longer but we will be happy to assist you.)

ENVIRONMENT MINISTRY

What is the very first thing you see when you enter the Church?
Well yes, it is the Baptismal Font, or maybe the beautiful Crucifix up behind the Altar, or is it the Altar itself?

That is the environment of our church and it greets us every time we walk into our church. Have you ever given any thought to who takes care of our beautiful environment?

There are times when extraordinary decorations are used: Advent Wreath, Christmas, Holy Week and Easter, but what about the ordinary.

There are so many other days when things need care, the green plants need to be watered or they will die, and if we have fresh flowers they have to be ordered, put in
place, then discarded when they have wilted. We also have many special Feasts, such as when we crown Mary, when additional enhancement is needed.

The bottom line is that our environment ministry needs your help! If you think you might be called to explore our environment ministry and share some of your gifts, don't even think twice.

JUST CALL, Mary Forestiere at 434-0674, or you can leave your name and number with Judy in the Parish Office, 434-7701. God will richly reward you!

The Pope urged the practice of Eucharistic Adoration in June of 2007 also, saying that the capacity for interior silence and recollection is ever more important in life that is often “noisy and scattered”. “There is an intrinsic connection between celebration and adoration. The holy Mass, in fact, is in itself the Church’s greatest act of adoration,” he added. “Adoration outside holy Mass prolongs and intensifies what happened in the liturgical celebration and renders a true and profound reception of Christ possible.”

  eXaLT Holy Hour

Join us on the second Wednesday each month for eXaLT Holy Hour.
6:30pm to 7:30 pm in the church.
Everyone is welcome.
Come experience beautiful music, praise through song, scripture readings and time for silent prayer.

eXaLT (also know as "XLT") was started several years ago by veteran LIFE TEEN Youth Minister Paul George in his parish in Atlanta, Georgia. Paul knew that the teens in his parish needed to grow in their understanding and appreciation of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Soon there were hundreds of teens from around the city coming together for XLT. Now there are many, many parishes hosting eXaLT Holy Hours on a regular basis.

eXaLT at Holy Spirit is open to ALL parishioners and visitors...not just teens. Come join us for an hour of Scripture reading, a shared reflection, prayers of intercession for our community, silence, and praise and worship music provided by our own LIFE TEEN Band. eXaLT Holy Hours are presided over alternately by Fr. Eric, Msgr. Logan, and Deacon John

The Pieta

In case you’ve missed it, look in the small shrine located between the statue of St. Therese and the statues of Mary and Joseph. We have received a replica of
Michelangelo’s
Pieta. This famous sculpture depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother, Mary, after the crucifixion. Across the sash on the Virgin Mary, Michelangelo carved his name.
“MICHAEL. ANGELUS. BONAROTUS. FLORENT. FACIEBAT.” (Michelangelo Buonarroti of Florence Created This.) The original sculpture is located in
St. Peter’s Basilica
in Vatican City and was sculpted from a single slab of marble. Holy Spirit’s sculpture is from Italy and has color added to it, to match our existing statues. Our Pieta was blessed by Fr.
Eric after the reception for Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th.

The Church encourages the devout veneration of sacred images not because they possess anything of power, but because the honor shown them is directed to the images they represent. The Pieta recalls our Lord and Mother Mary; by meditating upon it, we are led back to contemplate our relationship with them.

BISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL

Our Vision Realized … the Future is Now!
2009-2010 Bishop’s Annual Appeal begins. This is an invitation for our parish to join the 87 other parishes of the diocese in working together to meet the needs of our diocesan family. Please see the article on the Bishop’s Annual Appeal in the newest edition of the diocesan newspaper, Central California Catholic Life. Funding is targeted for the many ministries within the diocese including seminarians and vocations, catechetics, youth and family life ministries, the school of ministry and Catholic Charities, most of which directly benefit our parish. Bishop Steinbock is asking you to think “10 for 10 in 2010” meaning that you should consider pledging $10 per month for 10 months concluding in 2010. This method of pledging would have much less impact on your family budget when spread over 10 months. Also, new this year you may donate on-line to the appeal by visiting our website at www.dioceseoffresno.org/Development/baa.php and clicking on “Bishop’s Annual Appeal E-Donation.”

Enclosed is a mailer from Bishop Steinbock, asking for your spiritual and financial support of the many ministries in the diocese funded by the 2009-2010 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. We encourage you to give prayerful thought to your participation in our Bishop’s Appeal at any level appropriate for you, keeping in mind those ministries the appeal supports which are most important to you. No gift is too small! Remember to think “10 for 10 in 2010” meaning that our parishioners should consider pledging $10 per month for 10 months concluding in 2010.

New Encyclical "Caritas in Veritate"

full encyclical
VATICAN CITY, 29 JUN 2009 (VIS) - At midday today, the Holy Father appeared at the window of his private study overlooking St. Peter's Square to pray the Angelus with thousands of pilgrims gathered below.

On this Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, Benedict XVI addressed a special greeting to faithful of his own diocese of Rome, assuring them of his constant prayers "that Rome may uphold its Christian vocation by maintaining unadulterated its immense spiritual and cultural heritage", and "that its inhabitants may translate the beauty of the faith they have received into concrete forms of thought and action, thus offering those who ... come to this city, an atmosphere charged with humanity and evangelical values".

"Today's Solemnity also has a universal aspect", he went on. "It expresses the unity and catholicity of the Church. That is why every year on this day, the new metropolitan archbishops come to Rome to receive the pallium, symbol of their communion with Peter's Successor".

"May the shared veneration of these martyrs [Peter and Paul] be a sign of an ever greater and more deeply felt communion among Christians all over the world".

Following the Angelus prayer, Benedict XVI indicated that "the publication of my third Encyclical, entitled 'Caritas in veritate', is now imminent. Returning to the social themes contained in 'Populorum progressio' written by Servant of God Paul VI in 1967, this document - dated today 29 June, Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles - aims to delve more deeply into certain aspects of the integral development of our age, in the light of charity and of truth.

"To your prayers I entrust this latest contribution made by the Church to mankind, in her commitment to sustainable development while fully respecting human dignity and the real needs of everyone", he concluded.

We warmly welcome Alex Chavez, Seminarian, who will be with us at Holy Spirit for the next year.

My full name is Alejandro Chavez, and I go by Alex. I was born in Matamoros, Tamualipas, Mexico. I am the youngest of a family of 13, which includes my parents. I have six sisters and four brothers. The oldest of my siblings is my sister Ana, who is 51 years old. My brother Alfredo, who is the oldest of the boys, is in the monastery preparing to be a Benedictine monk at the Prince of Peace Monastery in Oceanside, CA. I am 36 years old and was baptized as a child and brought up Catholic. My family and I emigrated from Mexico to California in 1980. We ended up in Porterville and I was seven years old at that time. I attended Porterville public schools starting from second grade and going on through high school. I graduated from Fresno State University and received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in the fall of 1997.

Shortly after graduating from college, I started working for Caltrans and it was then that one day as I drove home from Visalia to Porterville in my orange Caltrans truck that the thought of the priesthood came to me as I prayed my end of the work-day prayer. It wasn’t until eight years later, that I applied to the Fresno Diocese and was accepted as a seminarian. It was during these eight years that I experienced powerful life-changing events, such as the Cursillo weekend retreat, my father’s death and an active
and rewarding time in ministry. These events helped me grow in my faith and aided me in the proper discernment of my vocation to the priesthood. When I applied to enter as a seminarian I was still working for Caltrans, where I was in the Design Branch office
in Fresno. I enjoyed my job very much, but it just wasn’t as fulfilling as when I am ministering.

The seminary that I am enrolled in is St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, CA. This is my fourth year in priestly formation and it is also the year in which I complete my internship. After completing this year of internship, I’ll have two more to go before my ordination. I have been assigned here at Holy Spirit to complete my internship year which is a year in which I, as a seminarian, shadow the parish priest and learn about everything that goes on in the life of a parish. As part of my formation here, I will be involved in the different parish ministries and I’ll be learning all the different functions of parish office. Occasionally, I will be giving reflections on the gospel reading during the homily time in Mass. I am very excited to be here and I hope to learn lots from you during my time here at your parish. I thank you for your warm welcome and I ask that you keep all seminarians in your prayers.
Know that you are in my prayers and may God bless all our endeavors this year. —Alex
