Called to be prayerful

Stewardship

                     A Way of Life

John 14:13

“Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it.”

Prayer should be, for Christians, a way of life.  We should “take it with us” throughout our day, an on-going contact with our Creator.  Jesus said, “I will be with you always, even until the end of the age.”  (Matthew 28:20)  If Christ were sitting next to you now, what would you say?  Would you ignore him?  He is here; we need only to reach out.

St. Vincent de Paul News

We are back on schedule for our meetings.  We will meet in Bockhold Hall every second and fourth Wednesday at 6:00 PM.  The meetings are opened with prayer and they usually last from 30 to 45 minutes.  We take care of any business and receive our need calls.  Please consider helping with this ministry of the church.  We all feel that we gain much from our work and it is well worth the time we spend.

The Pantry is always in need of food as are all pantries at this time.  The food drives are over but the need continues.  Consider donating one can of food each week.  This would be a tremendous help.

Our March day at the Warehouse is March 14th.  As usual we need more volunteers especially truck drivers.  They always pair up the drivers so you are never alone on a truck.  Our Saturday Pick-ups are essential to the next Saturday’s donations.

We hope to see some new parishioners at our meetings on March 11th and 25th.

Holy Trinity Newspaper Bins

2009

Please place this record of the Newspaper Drop-off Dates in a convenient location so you will know when your newspapers, catalogs & magazines need to be dropped off at the church.  The bin is placed by Ray’s Trash Service in the parking lot east of the Rectory starting on the 2nd Friday of the month.  This year’s schedule is as follows:

January  9 – 12                 July  10 - 13

March  13 – 16                 September  11 - 14

May  8 – 11                      November  13 – 16

Ray’s Trash Service would prefer NOT to get Telephone Books as the paper is too poor quality.

Let Not Your Heart be Troubled

Let not your heart be troubled, fear not; do not grieve; be not afraid in danger, trust God, in Him believe.  If you are heavy laden, your soul in need of rest, ask humbly of your Father, you surely shall be blessed.  You know Him as your Savior, your Guardian and your Friend; you trust Him as your healer all mercy to extend.  How sweet it is to know Him in sunshine and in pain!  You know His promises are true, that rainbow follows rain.

January 2009 Parish Council Meeting

The first meeting of the New Year for the Parish Council occurred on January 21st.  The council got to work on some of the more pressing topics facing our church.  The financial report for the Armchair Horse Racing event was shared.  This past year’s event was poorly attended, but the parish nearly broke even on the event.  This event will not take place in the future, and the council is exploring other fundraising options.

The planning for this year’s Reverse Raffle is underway. The event will take place on February 21st.  Volunteers are already working on getting silent auction items and selling tickets.  If you’d like to purchase tickets please contact Tom Kashman at 339-8883.

The construction on Holy Family Shelter is temporarily stalled while the company awaits proper drainage permitting to finish the project.  We are expecting it to be finished sometime in the late fall of 2009.

The financial report was given and while collections are below the budget by about $3000 for the fiscal year, the parish has reduced expenses and is outperforming its budgeted income.

The “Young at Heart” group is experiencing good participation.  They will be visiting the new Central Library and Indianapolis Airport on their next adventure.

The council is currently exploring options for new fundraisers and outreach programs in the neighborhood.  If you would like your input heard please feel free to attend a committee meeting, or speak to any council representative.

The Stewardship Commission reported that KSKJ has donated 25 tables and 3 new toilets for the gym in Bockhold Hall. We are also working with a local Boy Scout troop to rebuild the shrine to Mary in the lot south of the church. We are trying to find an expert user for the handicap lift outside church to help with those that need to use it, as well as addressing problems with the speaker system in church.

The Faith Formation and Family Life Commission would like to report that we’re in the planning stages for the Christ Renews retreat, and that St Vincent de Paul meetings are now on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month.

Spiritual Life is working on new minister guidelines for those serving during Mass. Please keep an eye out for those.

BURDENS SHARED, BURDENS EASED

Last weekend’s Gospel reading (Mark 2:1-12) relates a story early in Jesus’ ministry.  Just after calling his first disciples to follow him, Jesus performance of his first miracles made him an immediate sensation in his home town of Capernaum and forced him to leave the city because of the huge crowds pursuing him.  Yet even in the desert people from everywhere flocked out to him for healing and inspiration, so much so that he could not enter a town openly.  No sooner had he returned to his home in Capernaum after a few days, the word spread that he was back. Immediately his house was besieged so that there was no longer room, not even for someone to enter the door.  As you will recall in last Sunday’s reading, a paralyzed man was brought to Jesus by his friends on a stretcher for healing by the Master.  Because the crowds at Jesus’ home made it impossible to reach Jesus, his friends actually climbed up on the roof, removed the tiles, and lowered the paralyzed man down through the roof to Jesus, who healed the man to the crowd’s great astonishment.

As I thought about this story, my mind fixed not so much on Jesus and the miracle he performed, but on the friends of the paralyzed man – true men of faith – who brought the paralyzed man forward for healing against such great odds.  Their faith and their action challenge us – today’s believers – as to the lengths we might go to help one another.  How heavy a load might each of us be willing to bear for one who is our brother or sister in the Lord?

“Loads” that are borne for the sake of another can take a variety of forms.  Some are financial and require practical planning and not a little self-sacrifice, as when families must absorb the weighty cost of medical care for their sick and elderly, or give assistance or even housing to family or friends who become unemployed.  Other “loads” require that we get out and do jobs for one another, as in the case of the friend who needs transportation to and from the doctor, or the neighbor who needs help with shopping and housekeeping.  At times the load that needs sharing is the burden of loneliness or depression.  Those who grieve the loss of a loved one need someone to ease the burden of their sorrow.  At other times, the load that will be ours to bear is the anger or resentment of another. Misunderstandings arise and tempers may flare, but when the burden of estrangement is allowed to grow, no good can come of it.  Such loads divide families and parishes, destroy marriages and friendships and create false martyrs out of those who would rather bear the burden than make peace.

Of all the burdens we bear in life, the lesson of this gospel passage applies.  Every load, however great or small, is made lighter and more supportable when it is shared with others.  And every load, however great or small, is also to be brought to the Lord, who will welcome the heavy-laden and will care for their needs.  Borne into Jesus’ presence by friends, the paralyzed man was healed both physically and spiritually.  Whom might you carry into God’s saving and forgiving presence today?

God bless!

Ed Johnson

Baking Potica on New Year’s Eve

Starting this month we will be featuring one of our potica bakers for each of the upcoming issues of The Trinitarian.  It will feature everything you wanted to know about your potica bakers, but were afraid to ask.

As you may know, Frances Fisher turned over the reins of the committee to Janet Black.  Janet is a former member of Holy Trinity and has rejoined as of February of 2008.  She is the former Janet Stanich.  Janet attended Holy Trinity School, St. Mary Academy and Marian College.  She taught at Ritter High School, IPS School 75, South Wayne and Ben Davis High School in Wayne Township.  She is happy to be working in the parish again and considers it an honor to work alongside so many dedicated and hard working women in the Potica Ministry.

If you have not donated any sugar or all-purpose flour to the committee, please consider doing so.  It is a big help for us to receive your donations.

Coming next month:  Nikki Brown will be featured.

Sausage Feast Proceeds Benefit Bockhold Hall

Proceeds from the 11th Annual St. Al’s Sausage Feast held in January were used for table replacements for Bockhold Hall’s gym.  As St. Al’s Matching Funds event for 2009, proceeds up to $1000 were matched by the KSKJ Home Office.  The Matching Funds effort allowed for the purchase of twenty-five new eight foot banquet tables for Bockhold Hall.

Many thanks to the patrons of the Sausage Feast for making this donation possible with your support.  Nearly four hundred dinners were served again this year!  Thanks also to the officers of St. Al’s lodge as they continue the lodge’s proud 102 year history of service to our parish.
