SPREADING  THE  GOOD  NEWS  OF  HOLY  TRINITY  PARISH

   90th Anniversary Rendition

Dear Family and Friends,

Happy Easter!  Alleluia!  I hope and pray this Easter Season is filled with blessings for you and renewing your hope in the Resurrection of Jesus.  Our Holy Week and Easter celebrations were beautiful and well attended.  I want to thank everyone who helped in our liturgies and celebrations, the Choir, the Altar Society, the Spiritual Life Team and all who serve liturgical ministries.  Congratulations to William Bartholomew (husband of Georgianna), Natalie Floreancig (wife of Robert), and David Sheets (husband of Susan) who entered into the Catholic Church during the Easter Vigil Mass.  They are a symbol of the renewed spirit within Holy Trinity.

Since I have arrived at Holy Trinity I have been fortunate to hear many stories about Holy Trinity throughout the years.  In so many of the stories Bockhold Hall was the location of a special event or memory.  Maybe you hung out with friends as you roller skated around Bockhold Hall.  Perhaps you were a thespian want to be as you performed in a play to a captive audience.  Maybe you scored your first basket or had your first spike in a game of volleyball.  Was Bockhold Hall where you met your husband or wife, attended a traditional celebration with polka music, or held your wedding reception?  Did you attend school, religious education classes, or daycare in Bockhold?  Maybe you learned how to bake Potica with the Potica Ladies or attended your first Seder Meal there.  Bockhold Hall has served Holy Trinity well for so many years and continues to be the center of parish activities outside of our Sacramental Celebrations.  Having served us so well, it is now in need of some much needed care.  Through the generosity of benefactors we were able to replace the roof of Bockhold Hall.  Now we are evaluating Bockhold Hall to see what structural needs must be addressed next.  With proper attention, Bockhold Hall will serve us for many years to come.  Stay tuned, in the next addition of The Trinitarian to learn how you can help us to do much needed work on Bockhold Hall while sharing in a part of history.

Please mark Friday May 22 on your calendar.  We will be hosting our Holy Trinity 500 Block Party and Raffle.  This will be a great time and a major fundraiser for Holy Trinity.  Be sure and read about it in this edition of The Trinitarian.

May the Peace and Love of Christ reign in your heart.

God Bless,

Fr. John

Holy Trinity 500 Block Party and Raffle

If you are looking for a fun-filled evening and searching for an event to start the big Memorial Day weekend, then we have the answer for you at Holy Trinity.  Start the Memorial Day weekend of fun and excitement at Holy Trinity parish.  Friday, May 22nd is the date for our upcoming Holy Trinity 500 Block Party and Raffle, and all readers of the Trinitarian are invited to join in.

This year’s event promises to be a wonderful evening of live music, good food, and fun opportunities.    We will have live music provided by The Porch Mechanics.   The Porch Mechanics are known as “Indy’s Premier good time party band” and their performance promises to be enjoyable for everyone.  The 500 Block Party will be outside on St. Clair between Holmes Avenue and the alley behind the church.  The Holy Trinity Altar Society is putting together a wonderful ala carte menu of foods, including Spanish hamburgers, chef salads, hot dogs, shrimp cocktails, and an assortment of great side dishes and snacks.  The Altar Society encourages all parishioners to bring in homemade dessert items as well.  Food will be served from the Bockhold Hall kitchen.  In addition, there will be plenty of liquid refreshments as well.

All parishioners and recipients of the Trinitarian should have already received their 500 Raffle tickets.   The May Raffle has historically been one of the largest fundraising events of the year for the parish.  We are asking for all parishioners and supporters to do their best to sell as many raffle tickets as possible, and help make the raffle a financial success.  We are adding a little incentive to the process by awarding a $250 prize to the person selling the most raffle tickets.  There is also a $100 prize to the seller of the winning ticket!  Chance monies and completed chance stubs may be turned in to the parish office, or placed in the collection on Sundays.

Due to some changes in state law, the raffle can not be tied to the outcome of any sporting event.  In light of the new legislation, we will choose 33 winners and proceed with a mini-reverse raffle on the 22nd to select the top prizes.  Top prize is $2000!  Please sell your raffle tickets!!

How can you help make this evening a success for the parish?  Please start by praying for good weather.  Next, spread the word about our May 22nd 500 Block Party.   Plan to volunteer on the 22nd.  We will need a lot of volunteer labor to help set up and tear down for the event, as well as help throughout the evening.   Let’s not forget to please sell your raffle tickets!  Let’s work together to make our May event the best yet!   See you on May 22nd!

Psalms 13:5

“But I have trusted in thy steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.”

“Trust” is the absolute conviction that God is always with us and we are sustained by his love.  It was trust that enabled the Virgin Mary to say “yes” to God’s plan for her.  She faced her future fearlessly, knowing that God was with her.  What freedom this gives us!  What a miracle in our lives!  We, too, can follow our Lord fearlessly, knowing we are never forsaken.

Volunteer Opportunities

Holy Trinity 500 Block Party and Raffle

How can you help make our May 500 Block Party and Raffle a success for the parish?  VOLUNTEER!  Yes, we need YOU! And you, and you, and you, and even you!

There will be two sign up Sundays for Volunteers – May 3rd and May 10th.  There will be plenty to do on May 22nd – enough for anyone who is able volunteer to be busy.  We need volunteers to set up, staff, assemble, clean up, feed, sell, show hospitality, direct, tear down, etc. etc. and we are asking the Parish Family to step up and volunteer.  If you aren’t able to sign up either weekend, and are interested in helping, please contact Marcia Bracik at 317-888-1273 or marciab660@aol.com.

Changes of Address

If you are planning to move or change your address please remember to let us know so we can update our mailing list.  Every month some of The Trinitarians are returned to Holy Trinity by the Post Office due to incorrect addresses.  The Trinitarian is mailed to our parishioners and friends of Holy Trinity with reduced postage because it is classified by the Post Office as a Bulk Mail item.  However, any time the Post Office needs to return issues of The Trinitarian to Holy Trinity due to incorrect addresses/changes of address then Holy Trinity is also charged a “returned mail” charge based on the weight of the item and then this amount is multiplied by a postal formula.

By mailing via the Bulk Mail rates Holy Trinity saves a considerable amount in the monthly postage for the mailing.  However, each time a Bulk Mail Trinitarian is returned to Holy Trinity we are charged more than a “first class” letter.

So, please keep in mind any time you change your address please let Holy Trinity know so The Trinitarian mailing list can be updated accordingly.  You may call the Parish Office at 317.631.2939 or e-mail us at holytrinityindy@catholicweb.com.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Church Preparation & Festivities for the Lenten & Easter Season

The Holy Trinity Parishioners sincerely thank those responsible for their extra special effort in preparation of the church, festivities and music during the Lenten and Easter Season – Maria Canalas in her direction of the Slovenian Choir, David Hood and Jennifer Velikan for helping with and maintaining the decorations and upkeep of the sanctuary, Paul Covington on the organ, Miranda Gratner and the Choir for the beautiful song selections and the Lenten Taizé Prayer Programs, Carol Douglas and the Altar Society for the Friday night Fish Fries, Holy Thursday Seder Meal and Holy Saturday Reception after Mass and the many other behind the scenes people for all their thoughtfulness and care.  The selfless efforts provided by these wonderful people enabled all of us to enjoy a beautifully decorated church, sweet song unto the ears and delicious nourishment at the most holy time of year to honor and praise our Most Holy Lord and God.  Thank you for sharing your kindness with the rest of us during this very special time.  God Bless You All!

Financial Peace University

Jim and Miranda Gratner will be facilitating Financial Peace University (FPU) for the Holy Trinity and St. Anthony Parishes, beginning June 1. The class will meet every Monday from 7-9 p.m. for 13 consecutive weeks. Free Preview events and registration will be held May 16 and 17 after each Mass at both churches.

What is Financial Peace University?

FPU is the most important step to changing your financial future. It is your Total Money Makeover Program. It takes the knowledge from God and turns it into real action in our lives through a step-by-step process taught by best-selling author and financial counselor Dave Ramsey.

FPU is a 13-week life-changing program that empowers and teaches you how to make the right money decisions to achieve your financial goals and God's plan for your life. The course includes practical lessons on eliminating debt, building wealth, giving like never before, and much, much more!

Who is Financial Peace University for?

It's for EVERYONE!...from the financially secure to the financially distressed. Over 650,000 families and individuals have attended Financial Peace University.

What Will I Learn?

In this life-changing program you will learn:

1.       Step-by-Step Cash Flow Planning - Luke 14:28: "For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it."

2.       Debt Snowball Plan Technique to Eliminating Debt - Proverbs 22:7: "The borrower is slave to the lender."

3.       How to Invest Wisely - Ecclesiastes 11:2: "Give portions to seven, yes to eight, for you do not know what disaster may come upon the land."

4.       Many more subjects, covered in detail - insurance, negotiating better deals, working in your strengths, real estate, relationships and money, and still more!

This course has been a tremendous blessing to us financially, but more importantly, it has strengthened our relationship. We understand our own goals and emotions about money and how we can complement each other’s goals to achieve more! Our marriage has never been better!

We have grown spiritually as well. The Bible mentions money more than 800 times. In fact, Jesus says in Luke 16:11, "So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?" We are called to be good stewards of the resources God gives us, and understanding that you truly are responsible for managing His money will forever change how you handle and think about money!

If you have questions, or for more information about the class, please see Jim or Miranda, call them at 280-0183, or email jim.gratner@gmail.com.

We hope you will join us for the class!

Holy Trinity Hosts Lenten Taizé

On Friday, February 27th and Friday, March 27th, Holy Trinity Music Ministry hosted Lenten Taizé Prayer in Bockhold Hall.  Both events were well-received, with over 35 in attendance.  The ensemble leading the music included Paul Covington, J.D. Douglas, Pat Murrell, Rosalia Bolden, Therese Harlan, and Miranda Gratner.  Carol Douglas read from John's Gospel during the service.  All in all, it was a very reflective and prayerful program for Lent. Thanks to all who helped make this a great event!  Keep an eye out for future Taizé prayer opportunities in the Holy Trinity Bulletin and Trinitarian!

                                    Featured Potica Lady

         Frances Fisher kneading

Potica dough

Many of you know Frances Fisher from her tireless efforts for Holy Trinity.  She holds a vital part in the reason that the potica ministry continues to flourish.  Even though she is such a fixture here you probably do not know much about her path to our church.

Frances was born and raised in White County, Indiana.  Her father was a tenant farmer and because of that the family moved often.  She was born at one of the farms where a doctor came to the farm to deliver her.  She has one older sister who lives in Lafayette, Indiana.

Frances met her husband, Dick Fisher, in eighth grade where they both attended school in Walcott, Indiana.  She said that when she and her sister were in high school they each had two outfits, one for school and one for church.

After high school, Frances went to St. Joseph School of Nursing in South Bend, Indiana.  She worked as a nurse from 1950 – 1984.  Immediately after her graduation she worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in South Bend.  Some of the girls who worked with her decided to go to Los Alamos, New Mexico, to work.  She had a friend named Leona Luzinski, who had had polio and who was going to Kansas City, New Mexico, and asked Frances if she would like to go and help drive.  Frances, having heard from her friends that there was a need for nurses in New Mexico, thought that sounded like fun and accompanied her friend to New Mexico.  She worked in Los Alamos, also known as Atomic City, for several months.

Dick was drafted soon after Frances was in New Mexico.  She returned to Indiana and they were married in 1950.  In 1952, she and Dick moved to Indianapolis.  They have three children, two boys and a girl.  All of her children attended Holy Trinity School.  Monsignor Bockhold baptized two of her children.  Frances continued her nursing career at Methodist and St. Vincent Hospitals.  As the years passed, their children grew and married.  She and Dick now have two grandchildren.

Frances retired from nursing in 1984.  She came to Holy Trinity to help for one day with the potica baking and she is still here!  She had been in charge of all the purchasing, organizing and bookkeeping for the past several years.  She is tireless in her efforts for the parish.  We are lucky to have such a model of Christian giving in our midst.  We love you Frances!

Coming next month:  Patsy Kronoshek will be featured.

Potica Report

Thank you to all who purchased your Potica for Easter from the Holy Trinity Potica Ministry.  We hope that it added to your Easter celebration.  I know that at my house if we do not have Potica with our eggs, sausage and horseradish, it is not truly an Easter meal.  As always, we have Potica for you to purchase.  We are thankful to accept your donations of sugar and all-purpose flour.  It is with your kindness and help with donations that though the Potica Ministry we are able to continue the support of our Beloved Holy Trinity.

COFFEE & DONUTS

We have been asked to write something about the “ministry” of Sunday morning Coffee & Donuts at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.  We were somewhat surprised that someone thought of this weekly event as a “ministry,” but in doing a little research and referring to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, we discovered that is exactly what it is, a group ministry.

The coffee is no secret (Folgers decaf and regular) or as Steve likes to say “leaded and unleaded,” throw-back terminology from his years as owner/operator of a Marathon Service Station.  The delicious donuts are from Long’s Bakery on Southport Road.  We receive a ten percent discount just because the donuts are for the parishioners of Holy Trinity.  We ask that everyone please visit Long’s Bakeries often at both their locations (West 16th Street on Indy’s Westside and on the Southside, on Southport Road).  We sincerely thank Long’s Bakery for their continued generosity!!!

YOU WILL NEVER LOOK AT A CUP OF COFFEE THE SAME AGAIN

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her.  She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up.  She was tired of fighting and struggling.  It seemed that as one problem was solved, a new one arose.  Her mother took her to the kitchen.  She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire.  Soon the pots came to a boil. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word.  In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners.  She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl.  She then pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl.  Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.  Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me, what do you see?" "Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

(continued on next page)

She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots.  She did and noted that they were soft.  She then asked her to take an egg and break it.  After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.  Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee.  The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma.  The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, Mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity -- boiling water -- but each reacted differently.  The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting; however, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.  The egg had been fragile; its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.  The ground coffee beans were unique; however, after they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her daughter.  "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond?  Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?"

Think of this: Which am I?  Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity?  Do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat?  Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff?  Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean?  The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain.  When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor of your life.  If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you.  When the hours are the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate to another level?

How do you handle adversity?  Are you changed by your surroundings or do you bring life and flavor to them?

ARE YOU A CARROT, AN EGG, OR A COFFEE BEAN?

~ Author Unknown ~

We both felt that by sharing our research on the definition of the word ministry, and by passing along the “story of the coffee bean”, we could best illustrate the “ministry” of coffee and donuts.  Each week, our group crosses Holmes Avenue immediately following Sunday morning 10:00 a.m. Mass, our hearts uplifted from the readings, the beautiful songs sung, Christ’s message in the Gospel, and by the inspirational homilies delivered by Father John and Father Peter.  Many of us enter Bockhold Hall still humming or singing the closing hymn.  We hurry up to the front table hoping that at least one of our favorite donuts is still available, then pour a cup of hot coffee, cold juice or milk, grab a napkin then take a seat.

(continued on next page)

That is when our group ministry begins.  We reconnect with old friends, discussing our many blessings of the week, take great joy in celebrating together happy news of weddings, anniversaries, births, engagements, and even share pictures on occasion.  We have been known to break out in song, usually happy birthday, and even on one occasion, it is said, a dance lesson or two was going on in the back of the room.

Our group is one of great diversity, every age from newborn to 91 and includes people who are life-long members of Holy Trinity and those who have just moved to the Haughville community.  Each has a special role to play in the group ministry and all are very happy to welcome new ministers.  Into each life a little rain must fall, but we both have found that it’s in the sharing of that sorrow or sadness, that hope begins to grow.

Please join our coffee and donuts ministry next Sunday and be sure to tell Steve your favorite donut, or any other breakfast treat you might want to have added to the ministry menu.  In sharing the good and the bad times of our lives we make each other stronger, at least for one more week till we gather together again.

Can you believe it?  It is May already.  May 2nd is Holy Trinity day to send volunteers to the Warehouse.  There are many activities during this month but try to help at the warehouse on Saturday, May 2nd.   Truck drivers, dock workers and clothes room helpers are needed.

It is also time to plant your garden.  If you have space, plant some extra for the Holy Trinity Food Pantry.  Our clients appreciate fresh vegetables.  We have not been able to buy from Gleaners lately.   They just don't have the food.  Many of their food sources have closed or are not able to donate at this time.  We appreciate the food donations left in the box in the back of the church.

We continue to make home visits in our neighborhood.  Our neighbors are eager for information about the building project and are glad our church is still going to be here.

We welcome anyone interested in the St. Vincent de Paul Society to attend our meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday in Bockhold Hall at 6:00 p.m.   Come for a visit and then decide if you would like to become a member.

For Reflection:
How have I seen this come true in my own life, especially after a time of sorrow and suffering? What does this tell us about God?

Dear Parish Family,

Perhaps you have noticed that, around the middle of the Easter season, the Church presents to us the most beloved and comforting image of Jesus the Good Shepherd.  We are reminded that through life’s fears, struggles, and uncertainties, we have confidence that Jesus our Shepherd knows of what we are made, loves each of us and calls us by name, seeks us out when we are lost, and leads us gently by safe paths to our Father’s home.

While the image of the Good Shepherd inspires joy and hope in God’s boundless love for us, we often take it for granted, not recognizing his challenge for us to grow in his image.  After all, it was Jesus, our Shepherd, who the night before he died appealed to us that we “all may be one just as he and the Father are one”.  Sometimes we prefer to be attracted to a “God-and-me” relationship with Jesus.  But honoring his command also to be at one with one another – “to love one another as he has loved us” – we find much more difficult.  Yet Jesus said, “I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold.  These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.”  Jesus is shepherd for all God’s sheep and every member of the human community without regard for their ethnicity, age, gender or worthiness.  Jesus envisioned the “blended family” for which he gave his life as “one flock with one shepherd.”

Not surprisingly Jesus’ followers down through the ages have found it more difficult to tolerate and make allowances for each other.  No sooner had Jesus’ early followers gathered to form a community in his memory, than they began struggling with accepting in their midst people very different from themselves – the gentiles.  Through the centuries, believers in Jesus have alternately run toward and away from the realization of his vision.  At times, that running has slowed to a limp due to the wounds that have been inflicted by estrangement, rejection, misunderstanding, ignorance, distrust, and even hatred.  Have we become a “multiplicity of flocks”, each claiming to hold the prerogative on the truth and authenticity?  While all claim to believe in Jesus, this belief does not always translate into the mutual caring and acceptance of one another Jesus desired for his own.

In order to move closer to Jesus’ vision of one flock and one shepherd, we might benefit from some of the advice offered to other “blended families” by expert counselors.  One source of advice suggests that common sense is one of our best allies in relationships.  Treat one another with kindness, patience and respect.  Choose to accentuate and build upon points of unity.  Respect and learn about one another’s differences, seeing these as assets rather than deterrents to unity.  Be open with feelings and fears; talk through rather than ignore conflicts.  Above all else, cultivate an attitude that values and reverences the other and, when relationships are wounded, don’t withhold forgiveness.  Be the first to try to make amends and reach out to the other with healing in your heart and hands.

If nuclear families can benefit from these words of advice, cannot the family of believers in Jesus do likewise?
