SPREADING  THE  GOOD  NEWS  OF  HOLY  TRINITY  PARISH

   90th Anniversary Rendition

Dear Family and Friends,

As I write I wish to thank several groups within our parish.  Thank you members of the Altar Society for preparing and serving another fantastic and delicious Mother’s Day Brunch.  What a turn out we had.  It was truly a delightful morning.  I also want to thank the 500 Festival Block Party team for your hard work.  Your tremendous efforts have helped us to develop this new tradition at Holy Trinity into a wonderful parish event and fundraiser.  Many people came to enjoy the event and support Holy Trinity.

This past month we have started a new initiative at Holy Trinity.  Within the parish we are in the process of forming a Not for Profit Corporation that will seek to acquire abandoned housing in our neighborhood, rehabilitate the house, and move a family into homeownership of that house.  We are currently filing the incorporation papers with the Indiana Secretary of State and forming our Board of Directors.  Our current goal is to have our first house occupied by its new owner in time for Christmas of 2010.  We are happy to adjust this if things move at an even faster rate.

On Sunday afternoons Holy Trinity hosts an open gym from 4 to 6 pm. During these two hours many teenagers and men from the neighborhood are coming to play basketball with parishioners.  The attendance has grown to up to 30 to 40 attendees.  Special thanks to Carl Quinn and Jason Kashman for starting this wonderful neighborhood outreach.  Many wonderful things are happening at Holy Trinity because of the great faith, love, and stewardship of our parishioners.

Please know that you are always welcome at Holy Trinity.  If you are currently looking for a faith community to join consider coming home to Holy Trinity.  Enjoy the blessing of being a part of a community and the renewed spirit of Holy Trinity.

I want to welcome three people who will be serving Holy Trinity this summer.  First I wish to welcome seminarian Andy Syberg.  Andy finished his first year of philosophy at St. Meinrad School of Theology.  Andy is a member of Our Lady of the Greenwood parish and a graduate of Purdue University with a BS in Organizational Management.  Andy will be with us for 10 weeks.  During this time he will serve in liturgies, meet people, pray with people, participate in and plan some activities in the parishes, and learn about parish pastoral ministry.  Please be sure and welcome Andy.  You may contact Andy by calling the parish office, 631-2939 ext. 226.

(continued on next page)

This summer Holy Trinity, along with St. Anthony, welcomes two graduate student interns from the IU School of Social Work.  Ashley Fallos and Carolyn Harkin-Brinton will be serving in our parish until early August.  They will be available for individual counseling, on a short term basis, and developing some programming and workshops for different areas of our communities.  Ashley graduated from University of Indianapolis with a BS in Social Work and Carolyn graduated with a BA in Psychology and Spanish from Illinois College.  Both are from the Chicago area.  Please be sure and welcome Ashley and Carolyn.  My hope is that they are the beginning of a long term relationship between the IU School of Social Work and our parishes.  If you have any suggestions be sure and contact them at 317 631-2939 ext 221.

May this summer be a time of rest and a time to be with those whom you love.

Love,

Fr. John

Thes. 5:14

“Encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. . . . always seek to do good to one another and to all.”

Sometimes we are so intent on day-to-day duties that we forget to notice the world around us.  We are called to keep the teachings of Christ uppermost in our minds.  We are called to be mindful of the feelings and needs of others.  When we wake up every morning let us also “wake up” to the people we will encounter that day.

Many thanks to all who attended our Mother’s Day Brunch on May 10th.  We had a super, great crowd, delicious food and made a profit of a little over $700.00!  Also, special blessings and many thanks to the small crew of volunteers who helped to prepare and clean up.

?As a special note:  You may have noticed the beautiful carnations we had at the Mother’s Day Brunch.  They were generously donated by Eagledale Florist (30th St. & Lafayette Rd., 317-924-4249) and Tolen’s Florist (Main St., Speedway, 317-241-1967).  Please consider these florists for your future bouquet and flower arrangement needs.?

Adventures in the Making

Recently the Young at Heart team sat down for discussion of upcoming Adventures.  Many thoughts were tossed around.  There is just so much fun stuff to do in and around Indianapolis; decisions were hard to come by.

These ideas are not carved in stone but here is what we are considering:

July:  Breakfast in Ryan Hall along with a lecture and discussion provided by our visiting seminarian, Andy Syberg.

August:  An evening with the Indianapolis Indians.

September:  A trip to Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Gardens along with a picnic.

October:  Breakfast at Ryan Hall and maybe take in some games and/or a rented movie.

October (again):  Later in the month take a colorful fall foliage sight seeing trip followed by a tour of Saint Meinrad Archabbey and taking in some nourishment along the way.

There are so many things to see and places to visit right here in our own backyard – many wonderful museums, concerts, historical homes, etc.

We will keep you posted via The Trinitarian, posters/flyers and announcements in church, etc. as the itinerary becomes more solid.

If you have any questions you may contact Ann Bordenkecher (St. Anthony) at 797-2126 or Kathy Ivancic (Holy Trinity) at 631-3019.

And remember . . . . .as always, stay Young at Heart!

Changes of Address

If you are planning to move or change your address please remember to let us know so we can update our mailing list.  Every month some of The Trinitarians are returned to Holy Trinity by the Post Office due to incorrect addresses.  The Trinitarian is mailed to our parishioners and friends of Holy Trinity with reduced postage because it is classified by the Post Office as a Bulk Mail item.  However, any time the Post Office needs to return issues of The Trinitarian to Holy Trinity due to incorrect addresses/changes of address then Holy Trinity is also charged a “returned mail” charge based on the weight of the item and then this amount is multiplied by a postal formula.

By mailing via the Bulk Mail rates Holy Trinity saves a considerable amount in the monthly postage for the mailing.  However, each time a Bulk Mail Trinitarian is returned to Holy Trinity we are charged more than a “first class” letter.

So, please keep in mind any time you change your address please let Holy Trinity know so The Trinitarian mailing list can be updated accordingly.  You may call the Parish Office at 317.631.2939 or e-mail us at holytrinityindy@catholicweb.com.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Holy Trinity Food Pantry

The Holy Trinity Food Pantry is open every week on the following days and times:

Tuesdays     1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Fridays        1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The Holy Trinity Food Pantry is an emergency food pantry only, supplying food for about 3 days.  We do require a referral from another agency, school, church etc.  We also only allow the same person to come once every 3 months.  We serve the people in the Haughville area.

The number of families helped by the Food Pantry has grown significantly over the numbers this same time last year.  The Food Pantry continues to need canned and boxed food items.

Please know this ministry would not be possible without your generous support!

        Patsy Kronoshek

Mixing Potica ingredients

You probably think that on Tuesday all of the potica bakers are sleeping in.  If you think that, you would be wrong.  One of them is back at Holy Trinity wrapping the potica to be frozen at its peak of freshness.  That would generally be Patsy Kronoshek.  Now you might know that, but there is a lot about Patsy that you may not know.

Patsy went to Holy Trinity School, St. Mary’s Academy, and attended Marian College.

Let’s back up a little.  Before WWI Patsy’s dad came here from Austria, during the reign of Franz Joseph.  He lived in Nova Gorica, a city close to Trieste.  He served two years in the service there before leaving.  He came to the U. S. to work in the factories.  He worked in the coal mines of Pennsylvania and in Virginia as a lumberjack.  He also worked at Link Belt in the foundry.  He met Patsy’s mother here in Indianapolis.  She came to the U. S. from Cerknica, Yugoslavia, South of Ljubljana.  Her maiden name was Baraga.

Patsy was born in a house that Gloria Leffler used to live in.  She was named Patricia Brezigar.  She will have to tell you an interesting story related to her birth.  She has one sister, Lillian.

Gordon Kronoshek moved to Holy Trinity School in the second grade.  He was a year ahead of Patsy.  She and Gordon both went to Senior Catholic CYO.  Their meeting is quite interesting.  She and Joan Makovich went to Lucids to buy bathing caps, as Westlake was opening for the season, and they were going to swim.  She and Joan were sitting on the cement wall by the church and the festival was going on.  Gordon was going to the festival and asked them why they had the caps.  They said they were going to Westlake.  He inquired how they were getting there and they responded that they were going to hitchhike!  He offered to take them and the rest is history.

Patsy worked at ITT Hoffman in personnel as the supervisor.  She went to Chicago when Hoffman merged with ITT, and retired in 1989 after 30 years of service.

She and Gordon had two children, David, who lives in Kansas, and Mary who resides in Indianapolis.  She now has three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Patsy has been to Southern Europe and would like to visit again. The last time she visited, it was Communist under Tito.  It was the week that Tito died in 1980.

She has been baking since 2002 with the potica bakers.  She still enjoys the baking.  At Christmas she treats us to homemade candies and marshmallows covered in fudge.  We love you Patsy.  Thanks for the years of service.

Coming in September:  Mary Barbarich will be featured.

St. Vincent De Paul News

Help!  Holy Trinity day to volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul warehouse is June 13th.  We really need your help.  In May we had so few volunteers that many clients were hold to come back the following Saturday.  If you are unable to help please consider donating your extra pots, pans, dishes, silverware and linens to the warehouse.  They are desperately needed.

For those of you who may not know where the SVdP Warehouse is located – the address is 1201 East Maryland Street.  It’s right off Southeastern Avenue, drive east on West Washington Street to East Southeastern Avenue.  It’s not far from the Hardee’s.  If you need better directions check it out on MapQuest at www.mapquest.com.

Our Holy Trinity Food Pantry continues to be used by our neighbors who are being affected by the many lay-offs.  We are only able to continue this ministry with your donations.  We are always in need of PEANUT BUTTER and CANNED FRUIT.  Have you planted your garden?  Think about sharing your produce with the Holy Trinity Food Pantry.

We continue to serve our neighbors by our home visits.  We called on 31 families during April.

Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays each month at 6:00 p.m. in Bockhold Hall.

Thank you for your continued support.

The Power of Love

Dear Parish Family,

The second reading from the Mass of the last Sunday of the Easter season just ended is from St. John’s first letter where he reminds us of the power of Love – not only in God, but in ourselves.  Read John’s words very carefully.

If God so loved us, we also must love one another.  No one has ever seen God.  Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us.  God is love, and whoever remains in love, remains in God and God in him.

At this present moment in history, and since the Vatican Council, there is an explosion of new movements among the laity which is restoring vitality, faith, and hope to the whole church in varying and surprising forms.  You may be familiar with some of these:  Cursillo, Christ Renews His Parish, Small Church, Focolare, Christian Family Movement, various charismatic movements and prayer groups.  They are the legacy of the Holy Spirit, who has been inspiring us to rediscover our loving Father’s incredible passion for us, shown through his Son’s becoming one with us and laying down his life for us.  Through prayerful study of the Word in scripture, applying it to our daily lives, and sharing our faith with one another, these new movements are dramatically renewing the faith-life of our people.  What is so hopeful to me is that these movements are teaching people how to love one another as the Father has loved us, to lay down any bitterness that separates us, and to come together in communities of love.  I believe that they are calling us to respond fervently to Jesus’ final prayer to his Father for us and all mankind:  “that they may be one as We are one.”

Jesus’ vision was for unity, not only in our families and among Christians and Christian churches, but between ourselves and the various religions, cultures, and nations of the world.  It could seem an impossible goal in our present world, so divided by greed, racism, discrimination, injustice, poverty, violence, and even divergent religious beliefs and ideologies.  But, if we truly believe in a God who loves us, every impossibility can be shattered, so that our “cradle” – this planet that houses us – can live in peace.  An impossibility can become a possibility:  nations can work united for the common good.  There is only one key to peace.  It is not power over others, intimidation, or the use of force.  It is love – from God . . . through us.

John’s letter explains the theology of the power of human love – which becomes infused with God’s love through faith.  We believe that when we love one another, we make God’s presence visible to the world.  This is the heart of the Christian faith.  This is the legacy of Jesus.

Today the term love has become one of the most frequently used and misused words.  How do we recognize Christian love coming from us and from others?  Christian love is characterized by recognition that every person is created in God’s very image, by respect for another’s unique difference from oneself, and by a desire to truly know the heart of another.  It is not self-seeking but seeks the good of the one loved, and is even willing to sacrifice on behalf of the other.  This is not the love of the world.  It is love that is out of this world.

It is God who inspires true love in us.  This is the love that Jesus perfected during his life among us.  It is the love that He asks us to practice when he sent us “into the world”.  To people of faith, love is not a choice:  it is our very way of being Christian:  being one in Jesus Christ with the other.

God love you!

Tender Mercies

For some things there are no shortcuts, no easy remedies, when life throws you a curve ball and brings you to your knees.

Sometimes it seems you just can’t win however hard you try when your faith is sorely tested and all you do is cry.

It does no good to gripe or complain, when you’re not up to par because true friends will understand and love us as we are.

We sometimes need a helping hand before we see the light, and just knowing prayers are answered will help us through the night.

We’re not alone in times like these unless we choose to be, for God won’t leave us comfortless in times of tragedy.

There are angels all around us to catch us when we fall, and through His tender mercies we can rise above it all.

-         Clay Harrison

If any little word of ours

Can make one life the brighter;

If any little song of ours
