       90th Anniversary Rendition

Summer Concludes

With

Banana Splits for Bockhold Hall Fundraiser

Version 2.0

Summer is a short 94 days and it is concluding next month.  We will soon be exchanging the roar of the air conditioner for changing leaves, shorter days, and cooler temperatures.  With summer’s end rapidly approaching, the Stewardship Commission will be celebrating the last Sunday of summer by hosting the second annual Banana Splits for Bockhold Hall ice cream social following the 10:00 a.m. mass on Sunday, September 20, 2009.  All parishioners and Holy Trinity’s friends are invited to attend.  Last year’s event netted over $2000 profit for Bockhold Hall’s renovations, and we hope to scoop together more contributions with this year’s event.  We need everyone’s help to make this fundraiser a success.

Holy Trinity will be awarded a grant from the Marion County Historic Landmarks Foundation, and will be presented with the check at our Banana Splits event.  This grant money will be used as we proceed with further projects at Bockhold Hall.  These difficult economic times are troubling for everyone, including philanthropic organizations.  Raising funds for capital improvements in this economic environment is even more challenging than it was before the recession.  We are very appreciative to the Marion County Historic Landmarks Foundation for their consideration with our project, and hope this event stimulates further enthusiasm for our efforts.

Details of the recently completed engineering report on Bockhold Hall will also be released and discussed at the Banana Splits event.  The completion of the roof project in 2008 addressed the immediate physical needs of the building; however, the other repairs and projects requiring attention are also great and needs the attention of the parish.  The parish focus on fundraising is critical if we are to give Bockhold Hall the attention that is required to guarantee its future.  Plan to attend the Banana Splits for Bockhold Hall event on Sunday, September 20th!

Stewardship

                     A Way of Life

2 Corinthians 8:7

“But just as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.”

When we develop the “habit” of gratitude for our blessings, sharing becomes the natural expression of our thankfulness.  Stewardship is not a cloak to be worn occasionally.  It is woven into the very fabric of our being.  To be a “child of God” is to be called to Stewardship, to be called to sharing, to be called to generosity.  Each of us, every day, will have many opportunities to give the gift of ourselves.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2009

“POWER LAB

DISCOVERING JESUS’ MIRACULOUS POWER”

The first ever summer Vacation Bible School for Holy Trinity and St. Anthony parishes was a huge success.  In brief, children ages 4 through 10 took part in a week filled with fun from Monday, July 6, through Friday evening July 10, 2009, culminating in a delicious pizza dinner with their parents and families during Faith-Fusion Finale.  Each evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., our kids participated in scripture-themed activities where they could see, hear, touch, and even taste the healing powers of Jesus.  Bible point crafts, team-building games, lively songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the Power Lab activities that helped our kids connect their faith to real life.  We had many dedicated adult & teen volunteers whom we must thank.

On behalf of the communities of Holy Trinity and St. Anthony parishes, we must say thanks to all the parents for allowing your children to spend the week with us discovering Jesus’ Miraculous Power.  Judging by the happy faces of all the kids who attended our week-long program this summer, and by many comments from their parents stating the kids were asking to attend for a second week, we are most confident that this will now be an annual event.  The theme for summer 2010 will be “Crocodile Dock.”  If you would like to volunteer or participate in any capacity please contact Patty Jugg at 859-6321.  Our first meeting will take place in January, which should give us lots of time to organize and begin fund-raising.

We especially want to thank Father John McCaslin for his determination and dedication to bringing a vacation bible school program to the children of Holy Trinity and St. Anthony.  Additionally, we must thank the staff and parishioners of St. Barnabas for their generous donations of Director manuals/DVDs and other training materials, as well as music CDs and lab coats for all the kids.  Your generosity will be long-remembered!

- Yours in Christ,

Co-Directors,

Steve & Patty Jugg

Summer Home Mission Week

On July 13th Holy Trinity and St. Anthony were able to have twenty-plus kids and 13 adults help out around the parishes of Holy Trinity and St. Anthony as well as do some work in the surrounding neighborhood.  We were not able to set up for a whole week but were able to get in three very good days of work.  Landscaping around St. Anthony helped spruce up the outside of the Providence Center.  The kitchen and dining rooms at the convent at Holy Trinity were painted and if you had seen it before, the new paint made a big difference.  We were also able to help an elderly lady in the neighborhood whose yard had grown out of control.  We were able to get it chopped, mowed and cleaned up.  She was almost in tears when she saw how nice her backyard looked after all of the hard work.  The parishes are hoping that this work camp will continue next summer and for summers after that.  On a more personal note, I just want to thank all of you for your support this summer.  As Holy Trinity and St. Anthony were my first parish assignments, they will always hold a special place in my heart.  Know that you are in my prayers, and I will be dropping in every so often.

God Bless,

St. Vincent De Paul News

Summer is over so we are back to our regular meetings on the second and forth Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. in Bockhold Hall.

All parishioners are invited to attend out meetings and learn more about the St. Vincent de Paul Society.  There are many ministries under the one umbrella SVdP.  Hopefully one will be right for you.  All Vincentians feel that they receive more than they give.  Jesus loved the poor, the sick and the under privileged.  Let us try to be more like Him.  September meetings will be the 9th and the 23rd.

I am happy to announce that Denise Brooking-Crane has consented to take over the duties at the Holy Trinity Food Pantry.

Unfortunately two of our volunteers have been forced to retire from volunteering due to health reasons.  We are in need of a volunteer for the first Tuesday of each month and the third Friday.  Please consider helping for two hours each month.  You can call Denise at 654-6299.  She will appreciate your call.  I want to thank everyone who has made our Food Pantry possible since I have been the contact person.  Thanks for volunteering, for donating food and generally being helpful.  I will continue to volunteer in the Pantry.

Remember that as a parish we are asked to send volunteers to the warehouse about every six weeks on Saturday.  During the summer months we have been very short staffed.  Holy Trinity did have five volunteers in July which was great.  Hopefully we will have more on September 12th.

The volunteers who go out on the trucks need to be at the warehouse at 1301 Maryland about 7:30 a.m.  All other volunteers can come at 8:00 a.m. or if you wish anytime in the morning.  You are always needed and appreciated.

Other Important Dates

October 25th is Blanket Sunday for the Westside.  Please go through your closets and donate extra sheets, pillow cases, blankets, curtains and bedspreads.

St. Vincent de Paul trucks pick up furniture and appliances every Saturday.  They will take furniture, bags of clothing and any other useful items you make wish to donate.  Call 687-1006 to add your donation to the Saturday pickup list.

Life’s Gift

Life is a wonderful gift, my friend, whatever the age we’re living in.

Listen not to those who say “Oh for the dreams of yesterday.”

Never since the world began, did time stand still for any man.

The greatest minds have failed to reach the wisdom that the seasons teach.

There is a harmony in things, that only growing older brings.

Happiness is learning how to value what is here and now.

No winter bird, no golden leaf, had not the summer been so brief.

About Slovenian National Home

In 1918, the Indianapolis Slovenian National Home was established at 729 North Holmes Avenue.  The founding members intended the National Home to be a social club, offering concerts, plays, sports, cards, beverages and dances.  A new building was erected at its present location on the corner of West 10th Street and North Warman Avenue in 1940.  A ten acre wooded lot which would become the picnic grounds is located west of the present location on 10th Street and was purchased in 1971.  The current National Home boosts a membership of over 700 shareholders who elect officers and a fourteen member Board of Directors during the annual meeting in March.

Altar Society Upcoming Plans

Holy Trinity is really a very busy and vibrant Parish.  I realized this even more when we sat down to plan the upcoming year of Altar Society events.  There is a lot going on between Holy Trinity, Saint Anthony, KSKJ and Saint Vincent de Paul.

Right now the Altar Society has a tentative schedule for the rest of the year and we will try to finalize events at our first meeting on Thursday, September 24th at 6:00 p.m.  Our meetings always start with a pitch in dinner and everyone in the parish is welcome to attend.  Whether you know it or not you have many gifts and we ask you to try to share your gifts with the Altar Society ministry.  We are always interested in new ideas.  You may have the exact new idea we have been waiting for.

Our schedule so far is as follows:

September 24th              Meeting                 6:00 p.m.

October 22nd                  Meeting                 6:00 p.m.

November 14th               Fall Holiday Bazaar

December 1st                 Christmas Party with Saint Anthony Ladies Altar Society

We’ll be adding to our events and planning for the rest of the year at our upcoming meetings so please plan to join us.  And please bring us your gifts.

Dear Family & Friends of Holy Trinity:

The Neighborhood Clean-Up Day is an event that was organized in 2008 to celebrate the richness and vibrancy of the near Westside of Indianapolis.  Recognizing that God has richly blessed the members of our congregations, we wanted to be a blessing to others and have a “miracle day” when we might be vessels of God’s grace and bounty to others.

Our first annual clean-up day on September 13th, 2008, was an unqualified success!  We removed neighborhood litter, planted flowers, and cleaned the streets and curbs and more.  We were blessed with 130 volunteers from a variety of sources:  Holy Trinity Parish, St. Anthony Parish, St. Barnabas Parish and Youth Ministry, St. Christopher Parish, Roncalli High School and others.  Our day started in prayer at Holy Trinity to ask Our Lord and Savior to bless our efforts and ended with a prayer of thanksgiving and lunch at Max Bahr Park.  In the 4 hours that the team worked we were able to clean 14 city blocks in our neighborhood.

With your help we want to expand this project in 2009.  The date is set for Saturday, October 3rd, and we will work from approximately 7:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m.  Our vision for 2009 is to collaborate with more churches and community agencies so that we can clean more of our neighborhood.  With more partners we can expand our route as well as the scope of the services we can provide.

Please pray about adding this ministry to the list of good deeds that you already do for Holy Trinity and St. Anthony Parishes.

May we sweep away that which separates us so we may live in unity”.  Keep an eye out for further advertising in The Trinitarian, the weekly Bulletins and through flyers posted in church.

We hope you will join us on Saturday, October 3rd as we unit as “Saints in the Streets” for our next Neighborhood Clean-Day.

Lord slow me down and let me walk with quiet pace today; not hurriedly lest I mis-step and somehow lose the way that You have marked, and priceless moments waste when I discover that I’m wrong and must my steps retrace.  Lord slow me down, that I’ll not miss the simple joys You give abundantly – on every hand.  Let me take time to live! – Alice Hansche Mortenson
