SPREADING THE GOOD NEWS OF HOLY TRINITY PARISH
90th Anniversary Rendition
Dear Family and Friends,
I pray this newsletter finds all of you well. I write this letter as I prepare to leave for Uganda, Africa tomorrow morning. I am using some of my vacation time to make a pilgrimage to Africa to learn about the Catholic Church there and hopefully bring back some of the fire of Pentecost that has set the Church in Africa ablaze. Know of my prayers for you during my journey.
By the time you receive this newsletter the “Hearts and Hands Corporation” should have been legally formed. Hearts and Hands will be a not for profit, legally separate corporation through the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. The purpose of this corporation, sponsored by Holy Trinity and St. Anthony is to obtain abandoned houses in our neighborhood, to rehabilitate them, and to sell them to families so that they may have home ownership. In some ways it will be similar to Habitat for Humanity except we will rehabilitate houses instead of building new ones. We are working with Holy Family Shelter to help us identify once homeless families that are now ready for home ownership. We hope to stabilize and build up our neighborhood community while helping families become home owners. While Holy Trinity is hosting the corporation, it is a separate entity with separate financing and bank accounts. This corporation is responsible for obtaining its own funding. The parish itself is not financing this corporation, though individual parishioners may choose to support it and the parish leadership could choose to make a donation. We are creating this model so that other parishes, if they so choose, could take what we are doing and do it in their own neighborhoods. In addition to parishioners we also have board members from outside the parish. Many enthusiastic people have come forward to make this idea a reality. Our immediate goal is to have the first family in their home by Christmas of 2010. If things keep moving as they have been we may easily surpass that. It is another way in which Holy Trinity is an urban leader.
This summer Holy Trinity will be hosting Vacation Bible School for parish and neighborhood children. And, St. Anthony, Holy Trinity, and St. Barnabas are coordinating a Summer Home Mission Week here on the near west side. Beginning Monday July 13th through Friday July 17th high school aged youth will be staying on the grounds of St. Anthony while going out during the day for service projects in the neighborhood. Each day will include mass, meals, recreation time, prayer time, presentations on topics of faith. For information contact our summer seminarian Andy Syberg at 317-631-2939 ext. 226.
(continued on the next page)
Sr. Christelle Therese, DMMM, will begin a series of presentations on the Adult Catechism of the Catholic Church. The weekly presentation will include a teaching segment and a prayer segment which will include adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. We hope you will be able to attend.
I am leading a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land from February 22nd to March 4th, 2010. If you are interested in joining me, please email me at fr.johnsaht@gmail.com. The cost is $2,825 for double occupancy room. This price is very good for a 10 day pilgrimage.
Peace and Blessings!
Love,
Fr. John

Psalms 118:24
“This is the day the Lord has Made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
It is human nature to take the good fortune in our lives for granted. We think to ourselves, “I am healthy. I have a good job. I have done well for myself.” But, when we suffer a misfortune, we think, “How could God do this to me?” We have so many miracles in our lives: the gift of each day, the love of family and friends, the abundance of the earth. Let us begin every day with a prayer of thanks to the Lord for the overflowing blessings in our lives.

Holy Trinity 500 Block Party Update
This year’s May event at the parish, the first-ever 500 Block Party, was a wonderful success story for Holy Trinity. The sun shined brightly, the crowd was large and enthusiastic, and everyone enjoyed a great party on St. Clair Street! With over 10,000 raffle tickets sold, the unmatched Altar Society menu, thorough advertising, careful planning, and a host of volunteers and supporters – we were able to realize over $5,000 profit for the parish!
It seems this year’s formula for success had one critical component. That key ingredient was teamwork! The spirit of teamwork prevailed among all the members of the organizing committee during our planning meetings and carried over to the day of our event with all the assembled volunteers and members of the Altar Society! A big thank you to all who volunteered, planned, organized, and implemented the raffle and Block Party! My fellow members of the 500 Block Party Committee were Marcia Bracik, Carol Douglas, Kathy Ivancic, Steve & Patty Jugg, Jason Kashman, Tom & Terri Kashman, Lydia Luckett and Steve & Nancy Rasmussen.
The winners of this year’s raffle were:
First Place Nathan Dexter
Second Place Robin Maluck
Third Place George Gabuzda
The seller of the winning ticket was Joe Stevens Jr. The individual selling the most raffle tickets was Steve Rasmussen. Thanks also to all parishioners and friends of the parish that sold and bought raffle tickets.
As with hosting any event, there are lessons that are learned. The Block Party this year was no different. This year’s event was especially challenging as we moved the party to the street due to the crowded conditions of the parking lot with the construction of the Holy Family Shelter. We intend to build upon our successful experience of 2009, and do an even better job next year!
We will see you again on Friday, May 28th, 2010!
- Paul Barbarich

St. Catherine of Siena, Junior Daughters, Court 109
HISTORY
St. Catherine of Siena, Junior Daughters
Division of
Knights of St. Peter Claver
The Junior Daughters’ Division was organized on August 5, 1930, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The Junior Daughters of St. Peter Claver is comprised of Catholic Youth between the ages of 7 and 18. The Junior Daughters program is national in scope.
At the first Junior Daughter National Convention, which was held in Houston, Texas, in 1975, Carmel Boykins was elected as Vice-Supreme Lady. She presided over the 1977 convention, which was held in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Junior Daughter program is of a wide range and strives to build good character and leadership qualities. The youth division is broken down into 6 Districts or States – Central States District, Gulf Coast District, State of Louisiana, Northern States District, State of Texas and Western States District. The headquarters of the Knights of St. Peter Claver is located in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Each District or State has a conference annually or biennially. The Junior National convention is held biennially.
The Junior Division has participated in many worthwhile contributions to Catholic institutions and churches on the local, state/district and national levels. The Junior Division adopted the United Negro College Fund as their national project at the 1989 National Convention. The Junior Daughters participate in many drives and activities such as Sickle Cell Anemia, Aids, and the Claver Basket. Members of the Junior Division have an opportunity to receive scholarships on the local, district/state and national levels.
HOLY TRINITY PARISH
Under the leadership of our very own Pat Murrell, the Junior Daughters in the Holy Trinity community have received the Expansion Award, 1st place in the Essay Contest and 2nd place in the Spelling Bee at the 2008 Convention in Lombard, Illinois. Holy Trinity parishioner, Natasha Jackson is one of several of Pat’s Junior Daughters.
With Pat’s guidance, the Junior Daughters work in the parish community by visiting and singing at nursing homes, feeding the hungry by working at food pantries and warehouse for St. Vincent de Paul and by collecting toiletries for the homeless. On Saturday, September 13, 2008, they worked with the Parish Partners (Holy Trinity, St. Anthony and St. Barnabas) to help with a Neighborhood Clean-up Day around Holy Trinity and St. Anthony churches and the surrounding neighborhood.
The Junior Daughters have fundraisers such as Talent Shows, Bake Sales and Mother’s Day Programs. And, as part of their education they have had “Countries Around the World” programs.
The Junior Daughters’ most recent activity was their Youth Gospel Fest program, which took place on June 14th, at Holy Angels Catholic Church. This program served as their last big fundraiser before their attendance at the National Conference in Houston, Texas this month.

St. Vincent De Paul News
As usual we didn’t have enough volunteers at the Warehouse on June 13th. Please mark you calendars for our next days to volunteer. The days are Saturday July 25th and September 12th. It would be good to show that Holy Trinity is still alive and well.
For those of you who may not know where the SVdP Warehouse is located – the address is 1201 East Maryland Street. It’s right off Southeastern Avenue, drive east on West Washington Street to East Southeastern Avenue. It’s not far from the Hardee’s. If you need better directions check it out on MapQuest at www.mapquest.com.
The Pratt-Quigley Client Choice Food Pantry located at 3001 East 30th Street always needs volunteers. Holy Trinity has been assigned Saturdays, July 11th and August 15th to send volunteers. If you belong to a club or have friends not working, ask them to join you in this ministry.
July 16 – 18 is the Mid-east Region meeting in Cincinnati. We are hoping to send a representative to this meeting.
The Holy Trinity Food Pantry remains busy. We are always looking for volunteers, food donations and would love to have someone to be in charge of the Pantry. This would mean a person to procure food from Gleaners and Aldi. If you would be interested in is opportunity please call Frances Fisher at 297-2498.
Our “need” calls are many in our neighborhood and we are able to make home visits for each request.
Our regular schedule of SVDP meetings for July will be Wednesdays, July 8th and July 22nd, at 6:00 p.m. in Bockhold Hall. Everyone is always welcome to attend.
There will be no SVdP meetings in August.

Life’s Detours
Dear Parish Family and Friends,
Let your memories wander back to your senior year in high school. Perhaps your mind was filled with dreams about your future – what kind of profession or job you would have, who would be your life’s partner, would you have a life of achievement, comfort, and security. All these years later, as you examine your life, how many of these youthful plans and goals have been realized? For most of us, life has evolved quite differently than we had imagined. A variety of people and circumstances – some good, some not so good – have intervened to shape our lives; they have guided us on a route that has probably had more twists and turns, with many more stops and starts and detours than we ever expected. However far our path through life has deviated from our initial youthful goals, we need have no regrets. Jesus’ own life shows us that, more often than not, the truly good things happen in the detours of our life, and these can be as graced and fulfilling as any well-executed life plan.
In the Sunday gospel reading for June 28, St. Mark tells about a very busy and devoted Jesus who was hurriedly on his way to the home of Jairus, a synagogue official, whose daughter was near death. Yet, despite the urgency of the situation, Jesus did not make a beeline for Jairus’ house. Instead, he allowed himself to be inconveniently detained by a miserable and unappealing woman suffering from hemorrhages. Jesus could have argued that he was too busy to attend to her needs since he was on the way to save a life. Yet the time he took to allow her to touch him, and the moments he spent talking with her, were moments of grace for her and discovery for him. He encountered faith. She encountered the love and peace and healing she so desired. The delay caused Jesus to arrive late – after Jairus’ daughter had already died. Yet Jesus was still able both to heal the “inconvenient” woman and to restore life to Jairus’ little girl.
Some of us – I must include myself – are very goal driven to the point that we become frustrated with life’s detours, the inconvenient people who cross our path, or the unexpected demands that scuttle our plans – not only our life-plans, but even what I intended to do this evening before some else’s needs or inconvenient expectations messed up my plans.
There is nothing wrong with having hopes and dreams, goals and plans for a career and achievements in our life. And it is reasonable to plan the events of our daily lives to keep them from becoming purposeless and chaotic. Yet, as often as not, it is in the detours of life where God encounters us, leads us to set aside self-seeking, and shapes us into self-sacrificing, loving images of his Son – willing to set aside even a career path if necessary in order to put our lives in service to some special purpose or to a special someone we unexpectedly met on our journey.
If you have foregone a planned career because another’s love turned your life upside down; if you have sacrificed a life of wealth and security for the sake of a better life for your handicapped child; if you have watched your leisurely retirement or travel plans evaporate because you were summoned to care for your aging parent; if you had to simply forfeit a quiet evening at home because of the needy neighbor at your door; then you have already become acquainted with the unplanned joys, blessings, and spiritual riches God has in store for you along the detours of your life.
God love you!
Ed Johnson

Heart Gifts
It’s not the things that can be bought that are life’s richest treasure. It’s just the little “heart gifts” that money cannot measure . . .
A cheerful smile, a friendly word, a sympathetic nod are priceless little treasures from the storehouse of our God . . .
They .are the things that can’t be bought with silver or with gold. For thoughtfulness and kindness and love are never sold . . .
They are the priceless things in life for which no one can pay. And the giver finds rich recompense in giving them away.

What Does Bockhold Hall Mean to Me?
Awhile back some people let us know “What Does Bockhold Hall Mean to Me?”
People remember the White River DJ parties which were so much fun, all the wonderful dinners, breakfasts, going away parties, Bazaars and Festivals brought back a lot of fond memories of working together, having fun and fellowship.
All of the hard work yet fun times of remodeling the upstairs bathrooms, the restoration of the church during the 75th and 100th anniversaries. The many wedding receptions, the many people who are missed since they have passed away.
Some remembered polka dances and skating and Sister Mary Carl and Father Bockhold, the May Crownings, which at one crowning someone’s veil caught on fire. The many baptisms, first communions, confirmations, graduations, weddings and funerals.
So much has happened here at Holy Trinity and many people have with great pleasure dedicated their time and talents for numerous events and projects.
Think about it, What does Bockhold Hall mean to you? Let us know. We would be happy to share your memories.
