SPREADING  THE  GOOD  NEWS  OF  HOLY  TRINITY  PARISH

        90th Anniversary Rendition

Dear Family and Friends,

Jesus “came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town.  Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature.  So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.  When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house."  And he came down quickly and received him with joy.  When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner."  But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over."  And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.  For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost. (Luke 19:1-10)"

It is amazing what an encounter with our Lord can do to us, how it can turn our world upside down and change our lives subtly or drastically.  Jesus proclaimed to Zacchaeus, “I must stay at your house.”  This imperative is what Jesus says to you and to me as well.  He must come to us, he must dwell in us, he must transform us, and then our lives will be different.  The mission of our Church has always been, and continues to be that of bringing every Zacchaeus in the world to Jesus.  The mission of Holy Trinity is to bring the Zacchaeus’ of our neighborhood and those whom we touch to Jesus.  We continue what was begun over 100 years ago.

As the shadows grow longer and the days shorter autumn will arrive soon.  With the growing darkness let us turn more intently to The Light, Christ.  I encourage you to explore ways to welcome Jesus more completely into your life.  Let go of past grievances, forgive a grudge, welcome a stranger, connect with someone with whom you have been estranged, pray more often, read and pray over scripture, learn about the life of a saint, don’t hold back words of love for those in your life, and give thanks to God every day.

Here in Holy Trinity the Lord awaits us.  Know that you are always welcome in this house of the Lord.  There is a renewed spirit here in Holy Trinity as we continue to be open to how God is calling us to proclaim his Good News.  It is exciting to think about what God has in store for us.  Keep us in your prayers.

Love,

Fr. John

Neighborhood Clean-up Day

Saturday, October 3rd

Again, this year, our “Saints in the Streets” will start in the Holy Trinity area and finish up in the St. Anthony area.  We have expanded our route and are working diligently to recruit additional volunteers and community resources for this year’s neighborhood event.

Registration will take place in Bockhold Hall across the street from Holy Trinity.  Free Parish Partners T-shirts will be available while supplies last.  We will provide sweet rolls, juice and coffee in the morning and hot dogs, chips, apples and soda for lunch.  And, of course, water will be provided through out the day.

Depending on the number of volunteers that come to the event, additional opportunities may be to expand also to King and Warman Avenues as we also continue down Holmes to Warman to Washington Street.  Leaders and Teams will be addressed the day of the clean-up and assignments will be determined at that time.  Tools and supplies will be provided by Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and other kindly benefactors.

Please pray about adding this ministry to the list of works that you do to demonstrate your faith.

For more information and to volunteer please contact Carol Douglas at 354-6103, Kathy Ivancic at 495-3019 or Joe Luzar at 299-3266.

Stewardship

Proverbs 19:17

“He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done.”

When Christianity is an active faith.  It is not enough simply to say, “I believe.”  Christ has enjoined us to put our beliefs into action.  We need to be “on the lookout” for opportunities for stewardship, for sharing.

St. Vincent De Paul News

Originally, Saturday, October 17th had been Holy Trinity’s day to send volunteers to the St. Vincent de Paul Warehouse; but, the date has been changed to Saturday, October 24th because the Warehouse will be closed on the 17th for the Estate Sale.

The St. Vincent de Paul Estate Sale will on Friday, October 16th and Saturday, October 17th.  At this sale items that are not requested by our clients are sold to raise money for the operation of the Warehouse.  There will be many good buys to be had and a chance to help the Society.  The Estate Sale will have things for Christmas, decorations, etc., pictures, furniture, antiques, fur coats and many other items.  Do plan to attend the St. Vincent de Paul Estate Sale on October 16th and 17th.

Make plans now to help at the Warehouse on October 24th.  According to James 2:14, “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?”  James 2:17 “Faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”  In His Book, this is what God said to us.  So please consider helping at the Warehouse as one of your works that you do to demonstrate your faith.

Our annual St. Vincent de Paul meeting will be at the Pratt Quigley Food Pantry on October 11th.  The West District is in charge of the meeting again this year.  Holy Trinity members are in charge of registration.  We have not yet received the date reservations need to be made by so if anyone is interested in attending please call 297.2498.

October 25th will be Blanket Sunday for the west side.  Please watch for flyers concerning the event.  Save your blankets, sheets, bedspreads and drapes for this collection.

Come join us at our Wednesday meetings on October 14th and 28th in Bockhold Hall at 6:00 p.m.

                           Featured Potica Lady

  Sandy Powell spreading

 Potica filling onto dough

Who is this lady helping bake poticas over the past several years at Bockhold Hall? You know, the lady who has the big brown eyes, pearl teeth, and always neat hairdo.  Why, of course it is our Sandy Powell.  She is a likable person who makes friends easily and is always happy.

Sandy and her sisters were born one year apart, and they were raised on Warman Avenue.  They were known as the three dressed-alike sisters in their Holy Trinity Grade School days.  Most people felt like they were triplets, as they were alike in looks and structure.  One neighbor could not tell them apart.

After attending Holy Trinity and graduation from St. Mary Academy, Sandy went to work as a secretary in the insurance field.  She enjoyed retirement for a short period, after which she took a part time job in food preparation with the Speedway and Pike Township School systems.  No doubt that is one reason she has been in charge of the Slovenian Festival food serving line for the past two years for all the wonderful food prepared by the Yagger’s Conservation Club.  Sandy worked in a similar position at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during various racing events for many years.

Until her recent move to Brownsburg, Sandy lived in Speedway for twenty-five years.  In prior years she enjoyed traveling to the foreign countries of Haiti, Guatemala, Mexico, and Rio De Janeiro.  She traveled frequently in the United States to such places as Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Washington D.C.

Sandy married Johnny Powell, a Holmes Avenue Slovenian in June of 2007.  They live in Brownsburg and participate in many Haughville Slovenian activities and events.  Both of them enjoy visiting with many friends and Slovenians of their past.  The Slovenian National Home is still a place of enjoyment for them.  Holy Trinity Church is their main place of worship, as it is for many other Haughvillians.  They feel that Holy Trinity Church is such a beautiful place to worship.  They believe additional Slovenian attendance by both young and old is needed for its future existence.  This is Johnny and Sandy’s dream.  Both of them are so proud of their Slovenian Heritage and the happiness that both Haughville and Holy Trinity Church has provided them.

(continued on next page)

Sandy always looks forward to her trips to Oldenburg, Indiana to see some of her former Franciscan nun teachers and others.  She tries to make a few trips a year with some of her friends and Johnny.  She gleams with joy while talking about her visits.  Some of Sandy’s good nun friends are Sister Annette (Mary Frank), Sister Carmen, Sister Shirley Massey and one of her favorites Sister Laurencia Listerman, who is now in her mid nineties.  Sandy idolizes them.  Johnny kids Sandy and tells her that she would have enjoyed a career as a nun, more so than as a secretary.  However, as he says, "Life is what is!"

Thanks Sandy for all of your help with the potica ministry.

Christ Renews His Parish

The second Christ Renews His Parish, renewal weekend for women, took place on September 12th and 13th, with much success.  After six months of faith formation and planning, a team of 13 women from Holy Trinity and Saint Anthony hosted and presented the retreat weekend to 11 others.  The Holy Trinity presenters included Kathy Ivancic, Patty Jugg, Pat Murrell, Nancy Rasmussen and Catrina Rush; and, the Saint Anthony presenters included Ann McCurdy, Debbie Miller, Denise Freeman, Denise Harty, Diane Harty, Erica Freeman, Sherry Yarrito and Maria Zarate.

The weekend was filled with unique and varied opportunities for faith reflection, fellowship and, of course, great food.  J  But most importantly, it allowed for new friendships to develop while a loving God renewed our faith.

The highly entertaining participants included from Holy Trinity – GiGi Bartholomew, Janet Black, Janet Blakey, Diana Davis, Carol Douglas, Natalie Hyatte, Kathy Lucas-Conerty and Luann Osborne; and, from Saint Anthony – Lisa Ashcraft, Peggy Dolan and Diana Torres.

CRHP offers separate weekends for both men and women, each Fall and Spring.  We hope you’ll consider the next opportunity for this reflective faith experience.  Watch The Trinitarian for dates.

Slovenian Heritage Still Strong

The Slovenian Heritage is still strong!  As the Slovenian community and their friends traveled near and far in the morning rain to celebrate the 91st anniversary of the Slovenian National Home, the afternoon sunshine made it a more enjoyable and memorable occasion for all our shareholders, families and friends, including the Holy Trinity Class of 1959.  We appreciate that you celebrated your 50th class reunion with us and recommend others follow your lead in the festivals of coming years

Thank you to Father John McCaslin, pastor of Holy Trinity parish and the Holy Trinity Choir for joining us to celebrate Mass.  Is it a coincidence that the rain ceased shortly after Mass? Thanks also to The Old Timers Band and Ed Jakad & The Time Bandits who donated an afternoon and evening of music for singing and dancing; The Yagger’s Conservation Club who prepared the food, made, donated and cooked the sausage; Paul Barbarich for composing the event program hand outs, all the volunteers, including the Board Members who organized the festival and served you in various ways throughout the day.

Please patronize our sponsors listed on the web site under Slovenian Festival.  Their donations made this festival possible.

The winner of the survey drawing was Stephen Fon Jr.  Stephen won a free lunch or dinner at the Nash on a Friday, Saturday or any open Sunday of his choice.  Thanks to everyone who responded, your suggestions are vital to the livelihood of the Nash.

We appreciate all of your support in the past and look forward to seeing your faces at the events to come!

Messages from City County Councilwoman Marilyn Pfisterer

You can find what your home’s assessed value is by going to www.indy.gov/assessor and click on the link.  Your estimated tax bill can be calculated by multiplying that figure by 1.5 (which is the 1.5% tax cap passed by the Legislature.)  The next tax bills are scheduled by the County Treasurer to go out in October with payments due in November.  The treasurer assures me that 2010 will be back on the normal billing cycle.

I have been asked by some about a self defense class.  After exploring the issue I did find that there is one planned (For FREE) at Conseco Field House on October 14th.  The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the class is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  More information about it can be found at www.anescapeplan.com.  Sounds like a good way to spend time.

PLEASE SAVE THE DATES

I am having my quarterly Town Hall Meetings:

October 10th – at the Speedway Town Hall at 10 a.m.  There will be someone there to discuss and answer questions about the Wishard item on the November ballot.  October 15th – at the Knights of Columbus on Lynhurst at 6:30 p.m. (Across from the 8 Second Saloon).  I will bring the CD of the Wishard information to that one and have someone from the new Office of Code Enforcement come to talk about ways to make a city a better place to live with code enforcement.

Please mark the dates on your calendar and come if you possibly can. There will be additional items there for discussion and I will have time for questions.  Bring a friend or neighbor and pass the word to any one you think might like to attend and get information.

CAROL IS GOING TO JAIL!!!

Yes, The Muscular Dystrophy Police will be picking me up on October 22nd and taking me to jail.  I need your help to raise my "bail" money!  Any little bit you can donate will help children with Muscular Dystrophy and get me out of jail!  Donations can be given to me, checks made out to Muscular Dystrophy or you can go on-line at https://www.joinmda.org/park100indylu2009/caroldouglas and make a secure donation.  I am counting on my family, friends and co-workers to bail me out for "good"!

Prayer in Time of Need

O Lord, in my present need, help me believe that You are aware of my anxiety and will do what is best for me.  Give me the strength to trust You and to put the present and future in Your merciful hands.  Amen

A Lot of Fond Memories of Bockhold Hall

I remember the building as the school building.  I attended school when it was first built for 5th through 8th grades.  On Friday afternoons the girls would play basketball.  There were 2 bowling lanes in the basement on the left of the stairs.  Also CYO used the rooms for meetings.  I was secretary for many, many years.

During the War Years, the room was used to entertain the service men from Stout Field.  We had snacks, sandwiches and soft drinks with music on the phonograph.

In later years, dances were held on Fridays in the gym.  There was always a nice crowd and good music.

One of our pastors got a group of good singers together and musicals were held on the stage.  The Haughville neighborhood had very, very good singers.

The gym floor was made for roller skating, which was nice for the younger groups.  We would skate 2 or 3 times each week.  Many people had their own “shoe” skates or if they didn’t, skates could be rented.  We learned how to dance on skates.

Activities like these helped our parents to know where we were at all times.

The Faith Formation and Family Life Commission invites you to join us for a study of our Catholic Faith.  We will be following the Companion guide to Adult Catechism.  Each evening will start with a light supper followed by study and prayer.  The Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy Sisters have agreed to present the materials.  It will be an informative and enjoyable evening once a month.  Food, Fellowship and learning!  What a great combination!  Our next gathering will be:

Prize Winning Recipe

Here is one of the prize winning recipes from the Altar Society October 2008 Chili Cook-Off.  It is easy to prepare and tastes delicious.

Scrumptious White Chili

1 1/2 Tbsp Oil

1 large onion, chopped

2 Cloves garlic, minced

2 cups chopped cooked chicken

4 oz. can chopped mild green chilies

1/2 - Tbsp diced jalapeño pepper optional

1 1/2 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp dried oregano

10.5 oz can condensed chicken broth

1 broth can of water

15 oz can Great Northern Beans

1/2 tsp cayenne pepper or to taste

Salt to taste

6 oz shredded Monterey Jack Cheese

1/2 cup low fat sour cream

Chopped green onions optional

1.         In a large stock pot, sauté onion and garlic in oil over medium heat.

2.         Add chicken, chilies (jalapeno peppers) cumin, oregano, chicken broth, water

and beans to stockpot. Stir well, bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and simmer,

covered for 10-15 minutes.

3.                  Just before serving, add the cayenne pepper, salt, cheese and sour cream.

Heat just until cheese is melted, being careful not to let the chili boil.

4.                  Serve at once, garnish with the green onions if desired.

Enjoy!

Lord slow me down and let me walk with quiet pace today; not hurriedly lest I mis-step and somehow lose the way that You have marked, and priceless moments waste when I discover that I’m wrong and must my steps retrace.  Lord slow me down, that I’ll not miss the simple joys You give abundantly – on every hand.  Let me take time to live! – Alice Hansche Mortenson
