MASS OF THE LORD'S SUPPER HOMILY OF JOHN PAUL II
1. "He loved them to the end" (Jn 13: 1). On the eve of his passion and death, the Lord Jesus wanted to gather his Apostles around him once again to entrust his last instructions to them and to give them the supreme witness of his love. Let us also enter the "large upper room furnished and ready" (Mk 14: 15), and dispose ourselves to listen to the most intimate thoughts that he wants to confide to us; in particular, let us be ready to receive the act and the gift that he has prepared in view of this final meeting.
2. So, while they are eating, Jesus rises from the table and begins to wash the disciples' feet. At first Peter resists, then he understands and accepts. We too are asked to understand: the first thing the disciple must do is to prepare himself to listen to the Lord, opening his heart to accept the initiative of his love. Only then will he be invited, in turn, to do what the Teacher did. He too must be committed to "washing the feet" of his brothers and sisters, expressing in gestures of mutual service that love which is the synthesis of the whole Gospel (cf. Jn 13: 1-20). Also during the Supper, knowing that his "hour" had now come, Jesus blesses and breaks the bread, then gives it to the Apostles saying: "This is my body"; he does the same with the cup: "This is my blood". And he commands them: "Do this in remembrance of me" (I Cor 11: 24.25). Truly this is the witness of love taken "to the end" (Jn 13: 1). Jesus gives himself as food to his disciples to become one with them. Once again the "lesson" emerges that we must learn: the first thing to do is to open our hearts to welcoming the love of Christ. It is his initiative: it is his love that enables us, in turn, to love our brethren. Therefore, the washing of the feet and the sacrament of the Eucharist: two expressions of one and the same mystery of love entrusted to the disciples, so that, Jesus says, "as I have done... so also must you do" (Jn 13: 15).
3. "Do this in remembrance of me" (I Cor 11: 24) The "remembrance" the Lord left us that evening encompasses the crowning moment of his earthly existence, the moment of his sacrifical offering to the Father out of love for humanity. It is the "remembrance" that is placed in the context of a supper, the paschal meal, in which Jesus gives himself to his Apostles under the appearances of bread and wine, as their nourishment on the journey to the heavenly homeland. Mysterium fidei! This is what the celebrant proclaims after saying the words of the consecration. And the liturgical assembly responds, joyfully expressing its faith and adherence filled with hope. The Eucharist is a truly great mystery! A mystery "incomprehensible" to the human mind, but so full of light to the eyes of faith! The Table of the Lord in the simplicity of the Eucharistic symbols - the shared bread and wine - are also revealed as the table of concrete brotherhood. The message that radiates from them is too clear to be missed: those who take part in the Eucharistic Celebration cannot remain impervious to the expectations of the poor and needy.
4. It is precisely in this prospective that I would like the collection taken during this Celebration to go to alleviate the urgent needs of all those in Iraq who are suffering the consequences of the war. A heart that has known the love of the Lord opens spontaneously to charity for his brethren. "O sacrum convivium, in quo Christus sumitur". We are all invited this evening, until well on into the night, to celebrate and adore the Lord who made himself food for us pilgrims in time, offering to us his flesh and his blood. The Eucharist is a great gift for the Church and for the world. To ensure that ever deeper attention be paid to the Sacrament of the Eucharist, I wanted to offer the entire Community of believers an Encyclical, whose central theme is the Eucharistic Mystery: Ecclesia de Eucharistia. I will shortly have the joy of signing it during this Celebration that commemorates the Last Supper, when Jesus gave himself to us as the supreme testimony of love. From this moment I entrust it in the first place to priests, so that, in turn, they may disseminate it for the benefit of the entire Christian people.
5. Adoro te devote, latens Deitas! We adore you, O wonderful Sacrament of the presence of the One who loved his own "to the end". We thank you, O Lord, who edifies, gathers together and gives life to the Church. O divine Eucharist, flame of Christ's love that burns on the altar of the world, make the Church, comforted by you, ever more caring in wiping away the tears of the suffering and in sustaining the efforts of all who yearn for justice and peace. And you, Mary, "Eucharistic" Woman who offered your virginal womb for the incarnation of the Word of God, help us to live the Eucharistic Mystery in the spirit of the "Magnificat". May our lives be a never-ending praise of the Almighty who concealed himself beneath the humility of the Eucharistic signs. Adoro te devote, latens Deitas... Adoro te... adiuva me!

HOMILIA DO PAPA JOÃO PAULO II NA SANTA MISSA "IN COENA DOMINI" DE QUINTA-FEIRA SANTA

1. "Amou-os até ao fim" (Jo 13, 1) Na vigília da sua Paixão e morte, o Senhor Jesus quis reunir à sua volta mais uma vez os seus Apóstolos para lhes confiar as últimas recomendações e dar-lhes o testemunho supremo do seu amor. Entremos nós também na "grande sala do andar de cima, mobilada e já pronta" (Mc 14, 15) e disponhamo-nos a ouvir os pensamentos mais íntimos que Ele nos quer confiar; disponhamo-nos, sobretudo, a acolher o gesto e o dom que Ele predispôs para este encontro extremo.
2. Eis que, durante a ceia, Jesus se levanta da mesa e começa a lavar os pés aos discípulos. Inicialmente, Pedro opõe-se, depois compreende e aceita. Também nós somos convidados a compreender: a primeira coisa que o discípulo deve fazer é pôr-se à escuta do seu Senhor, abrindo o coração para aceitar a iniciativa do seu amor. Só depois será convidado a fazer, por sua vez, o que o Mestre fez. Também ele se deverá comprometer em "lavar os pés" aos irmãos, tranduzindo em gestos de serviço mútuo aquele amor que constitui a síntese de todo o Evangelho (cf. Jo 13, 1-20). Ainda durante a Ceia, sabendo que já chegara a sua "hora", Jesus abençoa e parte o pão, depois distribui-o aos Apóstolos dizendo: "Este é o Meu corpo"; e faz o mesmo com o cálice: "Este é o Meu sangue". Depois diz-lhes: "fazei isto em memória de Mim" (1 Cor 11, 24.25). Nisto, verdadeiramente, está o testemunho de um amor levado "até ao extremo" (Jo 13, 1). Jesus oferece-se em alimento aos discípulos para se tornar uma só coisa com eles. Mais uma vez é realçada a "lição" que é necessário aprender: a primeira coisa que deve ser feita é abrir o coração ao acolhimento do amor de Cristo. A iniciativa é sua: é o seu amor que nos torna capazes de amar, por nossa vez, os irmãos. Eis, pois: o rito do lava-pés e o sacramento da Eucaristia: duas manifestações de um só mistério de amor confiado aos discípulos "para que diz Jesus como Eu vos fiz, façais vós também" (Jo 13, 15).
3. "Fazei isto em memória de Mim" (1 Cor 11, 24). A "memória", que o Senhor nos deixou naquela noite, coincide com o momento culminante da sua existência terrena, o momento da sua oferenda sacrificial ao Pai por amor da humanidade. É uma "memória" que se insere no contexto de uma ceia, a ceia pascal, na qual Jesus se oferece aos seus Apóstolos sob as espécies do pão e do vinho, como seu alimento no caminho para a pátria do Céu. Mysterium fidei! Assim proclama o celebrante depois de ter pronunciado as palavras da consagração. E a assembleia litúrgica responde exprimindo com alegria a sua fé e a sua adesão repleta de esperança. Que mistério grandioso, a Eucaristia! Mistério "incompreensível" para a mente humana, mas tão luminoso aos olhos da fé! A Mesa do Senhor na simplicidade dos símbolos eucarísticos o pão e o vinho partilhados revela-se também como mesa da irmandade concreta. A mensagem que provém dela é demasiado clara, e portanto não é possível ignorá-la: todos os que participam na Celebração eucarística não podem permanecer insensíveis face às expectativas dos pobres e dos necessitados.
4. Precisamente nesta perspectiva desejo que as ofertas reunidas durante esta Celebração sejam destinadas às urgentes necessidades de todos os que sofrem no Iraque devido às consequências da guerra. Um coração que experimentou o amor do Senhor abre-se espontaneamente à caridade para com os irmãos. "O sacrum convivium, in quo Christus sumitur". Todos somos convidados, esta noite, a celebrar e a adorar pela noite fora o Senhor que se fez alimento para nós, peregrinos no tempo, oferecendo-nos o seu corpo e o seu sangue. A Eucaristia é um grande dom para a Igreja e para o mundo. Precisamente para que seja dedicada uma atenção cada vez mais profunda ao sacramento da Eucaristia, quis oferecer a toda a Comunidade dos crentes uma Encíclica, cujo tema focal é o Mistério eucarístico: Ecclesia de Eucharistia. Daqui a pouco terei a alegria de a assinar durante esta Celebração que recorda a Última Ceia, quando Jesus se nos deixou a Si mesmo no testamento de amor supremo. Entrego-a agora e em primeiro lugar aos sacerdotes, para que, por sua vez, a difundam em benefício de todo o povo cristão.
5. Adoro te devote, latens Deitas! Nós Vos adoramos, ó admirável Sacramento da presença d'Aquele que amou os seus "até ao fim". Nós Vos agradecemos, ó Senhor, que na Eucaristia edificais, reunis e vivificais a Igreja. Ó divina Eucaristia, chama do amor de Cristo que ardes no altar do mundo, faz com que a Igreja, por Vós confortada, seja sempre solícita em enxugar as lágrimas de quem sofre e em amparar os esforços dos que aspiram pela justiça e pela paz. E tu, Maria, Mulher "eucarística", que ofereceste o teu seio virginal para a encarnação do Verbo de Deus, ajuda-nos a viver o Mistério eucarístico no espírito do Magnificat. Que a nossa vida seja um louvor sem fim ao Omnipotente, que se escondeu na humildade dos sinais eucarísticos. Adoro te devote, latens Deitas... Adoro te... adiuva me!
