1. "When the time came for their purification ... they brought the child up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord" (Lk 2,22). The Infant Jesus entered the temple of Jerusalem in the arms of his Virgin Mother. "Born of woman, born under the law" (Gal 4,4), he submitted to the destiny of every first-born male child of his people: according to the Law of the Lord he had to be "ransomed" with a sacrifice, 40 days after his birth (cf. Ex 13,2.12; Lv 12,1-8). The newborn Child, in every way like all others outwardly, does not pass unnoticed. The Holy Spirit opens the eyes of faith of the elderly Simeon who comes near, and, taking the Child in his arms, recognizes in him the Messiah and praises God (cf. Lk 2,25-32). This Child, he prophesies, will be "a light for the Gentiles, the glory of Israel" (cf. v. 32), but also a sign of contradiction (cf. v. 34) because according to the Scriptures he will realize the judgement of God. Moreover, the devout old man predicts to the astonished Mother that this will happen through a suffering in which she too will be a sharer (cf. v. 35).

2. Forty days after Christmas, the Church celebrates this stirring joyful mystery that, in a certain way, anticipates both the sorrow of Good Friday and the joy of Easter. In the Eastern Tradition this day is called the "Feast of the Meeting", because in the sacred space of the Temple of Jerusalem, the meeting takes place between God's graciousness and the expectation of the chosen people. All this acquires in Christ an eschatological meaning and value: he is the Bridegroom who comes to accomplish the nuptial covenant with Israel. Many are called, but how many are effectively ready to receive him, with watchful minds and hearts (cf. Mt 22,14)? In today's liturgy we contemplate Mary, the model of those who wait and open their hearts in docility to the meeting with Lord.

3. In this light, the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the temple is a very suitable day for the the appreciative praise of consecrated persons, and for some years the Day of Consecrated Life has rightly been observed on this day. The picture of Mary who in the temple offers the Son to God, speaks eloquently to the hearts of the men and women who have made a total offering of themselves to the Lord through the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience for the Kingdom of Heaven. The theme of spiritual sacrifice is fused with that of light, introduced by Simeon's words. The Virgin appears as a candlestick bearing Christ, the "Light of the world". With Mary, thousands of men and women religious and consecrated lay people throughout the world gather to renew their consecration, holding lighted candles, the expression of their life, burning with faith and love.

4. Here too, in St Peter's Basilica this evening, we offer a solemn thanksgiving to God for the gift of the consecrated life in the Diocese of Rome and in the universal Church. I warmly greet Cardinal Eduardo Martínez Somalo, Prefect of the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apsotolic Life, and his collaborators. I affectionately greet all of you, brothers and sisters, men and women religious and consecrated lay people! With your large, devout and joyful presence, you impress upon the liturgical assembly the face of the Church-Bride, like Mary, doing her utmost to be in total conformity with the Divine Word. High up in their niches along the walls of this basilica, the founders and foundresses of many of your institutes watch over you. They recall the mystery of the Communion of Saints through which, in the pilgrim Church, from age to age, many renew the choice of following Christ with a special consecration in accord with the many charisms kindled by the Spirit. At the same time, those venerable figures are an invitation to turn our gaze to the heavenly homeland where, in the gathering of saints, so many consecrated souls praise with full beatitude the Triune God whom they loved and served on earth with a free and undivided heart.

5. Poverty, chastity and obedience are distintive features of the redeemed person, inwardly set free from the slavery of egotism. Free to love, free to serve: this is the way the men and women are who renounce themselves for the Kingdom of Heaven. Following in the footsteps of the crucified and risen Christ, they live this freedom as solidarity, taking on the spiritual and material burdens of their brothers and sisters. This is the multiform "service of charity" that is exercised in the cloister, in hospitals, parishes and schools, among the poor and immigrants, in the new meeting places of the mission. In thousands of ways consecrated life is a manifestation of God's love in the world (cf. Apostolic Exhortation, Vita consecrata, chapter III). With grateful hearts, let us praise God today for each of them. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may the Lord increasingly enrich his Church with this great gift. To the praise and glory of his Name and for the spread of his Kingdom. Amen!

HOMILIA DO PAPA JOÃO PAULO II NA FESTIVIDADE DA APRESENTAÇÃO DO SENHOR NO TEMPLO E RECORDANDO A "JORNADA MUNDIAL DA VIDA CONSAGRADA"

1. "Quando se cumpriu o tempo da sua purificação, segundo a lei de Moisés, levaram-no a Jerusalém para O apresentarem ao Senhor" (Lc 2, 22). O Menino Jesus entra no Templo de Jerusalém nos braços da Virgem Mãe. "Nascido de mulher, nascido sujeito à Lei" (Gl 4, 4), Ele segue o destino de cada primogénito varão do seu povo: segundo a Lei do Senhor, deve ser "resgatado" com um sacrifício, quarenta dias depois do nascimento (cf. Êx 13, 2.12; Lv 12, 1-8). Aquele recém-nascido, aparentemente em tudo semelhante aos outros, não passa despercebido: o Espírito Santo abre os olhos da fé ao velho Simeão, que se aproxima e, tomando o Menino nos braços, reconhece nele o Messias e louva a Deus (cf. Lc 2, 25-32). Este Menino profetiza ele será luz das gentes e glória de Israel (cf. ibid., v. 32), mas também "sinal de contradição" (Ibid., v. 34) porque, segundo as Escrituras, realizará o juízo de Deus. E à Mãe admirada, o piedoso ancião prediz que isto acontecerá através de um sofrimento, em que também Ela há-de participar (cf. ibid., v. 35).

2. Quarenta dias depois do Natal, a Igreja celebra este sugestivo mistério gozoso que, de certa forma, antecipa o sofrimento da Sexta-Feira Santa e a alegria da Páscoa. A tradição oriental denomina esta solenidade como a "festa do encontro" porque, no espaço sagrado do Templo de Jerusalém, tem lugar o abraço entre a bondade de Deus e a expectativa do povo eleito. E tudo isto adquire significado e valor escatológico em Cristo: Ele é o Esposo que vem cumprir a aliança nupcial com Israel. Muitas pessoas são chamadas, mas quantas estão efectivamente prontas a recebê-lo, com a mente e o coração vigilantes (cf. Mt 22, 14)? Na liturgia do dia de hoje contemplamos Maria, modelo daqueles que esperam e abrem com docilidade o coração para o encontro com o Senhor.

3. Nesta perspectiva, a festividade da Apresentação de Jesus no Templo revela-se particularmente adequada para acolher o louvor reconhecido das pessoas consagradas e, com razão, é desde há alguns anos, que se celebra precisamente nesta data a "Jornada Mundial da Vida Consagrada". A imagem de Maria que, no Templo, oferece a Deus o Filho, fala com eloquência ao coração dos homens e das mulheres que fizeram total oblação de si mesmos ao Senhor, mediante os votos de pobreza, castidade e obediência pelo Reino dos Céus. O tema da oferenda espiritual mistura-se com o tema da luz, intoduzido pelas palavras de Simeão. Assim, a Virgem manifesta-se como um candelabro que apresenta Jesus, "Luz do mundo". Juntamente com Maria, milhares de religiosos, religiosas e leigos consagrados estão reunidos no dia de hoje, no mundo inteiro, para renovar a sua consagração, tendo nas mãos os círios acesos, expressão da sua ardente existência de fé e de amor.

4. Também aqui, na Basílica de São Pedro, se eleva nesta tarde uma solene acção de graças a Deus pelo dom da vida consagrada, tanto na Diocese de Roma como na Igreja universal. Saúdo com profunda cordialidade o Senhor Cardeal Eduardo Martínez Somalo, Prefeito da Congregação para os Institutos de Vida Consagrada e as Sociedades de Vida Apostólica, assim como os seus colaboradores. Saúdo-vos com afecto também a todos vós, Irmãos e Irmãs, religiosos, religiosas e leigos consagrados! Com a vossa numerosa, devota e alegre esperança, vós assumis nesta assembleia litúrgica o rosto da Igreja-Esposa que, como Maria, está totalmente orientada para a plena conformação com a Palavra divina. Do alto dos seus nichos, ao longo das paredes desta Basílica, os Fundadores e as Fundadoras de muitos dos vossos Institutos velam sobre vós. Eles recordam o mistério da comunhão dos Santos, em virtude da qual, na Igreja peregrina, se renova de geração em geração a escolha de seguir Cristo com uma especial consagração, segundo os múltiplos carismas suscitados pelo Espírito. Ao mesmo tempo, estas veneráveis figuras convidam-nos a dirigir o olhar para a Pátria celestial onde, na assembleia dos Santos, muitas almas consagradas louvam em plena bem-aventurança o Deus Uno e Trino a quem, na terra, amaram e serviram com o coração livre e indivisível.

5. Pobreza, castidade e obediência são as características distintivas do homem redimido, interiormente resgatado da escravidão do egoísmo. Livres para amar, livres para servir: assim são os homens e as mulheres que renunciam a si mesmos pelo Reino dos Céus. Seguindo Cristo, crucificado e ressuscitado, eles vivem esta liberdade como solidariedade, assumindo os pesos espirituais e materiais dos seus irmãos. Trata-se do multiforme "servitium caritatis", que se exerce no claustro e nos hospitais, nas paróquias e nas escolas, no meio dos pobres e dos migrantes, e também nos novos areópagos da missão. De numerosas formas, a vida consagrada é epifania do amor de Deus no mundo (cf. Exortação Apostólica Vita consecrata, cap. III). Com a alma reconhecida, no dia de hoje damos graças a Deus por cada um deles. Por intercessão da Virgem Maria, o Senhor enriqueça cada vez mais a sua Igreja com este grandioso dom. Para o louvor e a glória do seu amor, e para a difusão do seu Reino. Amen!
