Sponsors are adults who are willing to share their faith experiences with non-Catholics as these inquirers make their journey through the catechumenate to grow in their knowledge/faith in Christ and belief in the Catholic Church. The group meets weekly between September and Pentecost. The RCIA process is led by a team of adults who coordinate details, topic presentations, rites, etc. Parishioners are invited to become part of the team. More Information: Following this period of inquiry, the adult—should he wish to—moves on to the next phase, the Rite of Acceptance into the Catechumenate. One who enters this phase has the intention to become Catholic and to seriously continue the journey of faith toward baptism. If the person is already baptized into another Christian denomination, he is called a Candidate for Full Communion with the Church. If he is not baptized, he is called a Catechumen. The Catechumenate phase marks the beginning of formal instructions in the faith. Perspective Catholics learn the basics of the faith and how to live the Catholic way of life. The Catechumenate focuses on Jesus, his teachings, the Church and the sacraments. The sponsor, a member of the faith community, walks the faith journey with the catechumen in a one-on-one relationship. When Lent begins, the Catechumen will participate in the Rite of Sending by the parish to the cathedral where he will participate in the Rite of the Elect. The Bishop officially calls the Catechumen to the sacraments. Immediate preparation continues until the Easter Vigil at which time the person will be baptized.
Initially the adult participates in this Inquiry period in order to inquire about our faith. It is the first phase of getting acquainted and getting answers to questions.
