 Ash Wednesday

Click image for info on Ash Wednesday 2/22.  It marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter excluding Sundays.  Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual disciple.  On this day ashes are placed on the foreheads of the faithful to remind them of death, of the sorrow they should feel for their sins and of the necessity of changing their lives.  Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the major days for fasting and abstinence.  Fasting for those between 18 and 60 means limiting food to one full meal, with two smaller meals allowed.  Abstinence for those 14 and over means no meat.

Good Friday

Click image for info of Good Friday 4/6.  The entire Church fixes her gaze on the Cross at Calvary.  Each member tries to understand at what cost Christ has won our redemption.  The Church is stripped of its ornaments, the altar bare, and with the door of the empty tabernacle standing open as if in mourning.  The liturgical observation of this day is of Christ's suffering, crucifixion and death has been in existence from the earliest days of the Church.  The service of Good Friday is called the Mass of the Presanctified because Communion has already been consecrated on Holy Thursday.
