Ninety-eight years have passed since the institution of Moorestown Council #1082. The Knights of Columbus, a society of Catholic men, was organized in New Haven, Connecticut, under the leadership of Rev. Michael McGivney, curate of St. Mary's Church.
The objectives of this new society were to provide fellowship among members, aid the cause of religion, and perform charitable, educational and patriotic works for the benefit of their fellow men and their nation. In addition to the United States, the Knights of Columbus organization also exists in England, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines.
This society spread rapidly, and with the support of the Rev. John W. Murphy, pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, and a group of dedicated Catholic laymen, Council #1082 was established in Moorestown with William S. Long as the first Grand Knight on January 28, 1906. The Council owes its stability to enlightened leadership and to the foundations laid down by its Charter members. Through the years, many of its members have been called on to guide the destiny of the Council and have served with distinction and loyalty.
From time to time, the New Jersey State Council has called on its Moorestown members for assistance. Many have served, either by appointment or election, as members of that organization in the Catholic, Fraternal, Council and Youth Programs.
As the Knights of Our Lady of Good Counsel approach its 100th Anniversary, it faces the future with confidence. It has passed through good times and bad and has weathered every storm.
The community of interests afforded by the membership of the Knights of Columbus, and the assistance coming from close association with others, who share Catholic culture and Catholic traditions, continue to be beneficial to individual members and the community in which they live.
Throughout the years, the Knights of Columbus members have aided the parish by:
- Providing Church ushers
- Operating the school kitchens at parish bazaars
- Sponsoring special functions in the school cafeteria
- Providing school scholarships
- Enabling Our Lady of Good Counsel students to participate in a statewide basketball free-throw contest
- Holding golf tournaments
- Administering semi-annual Red Cross Blood drives
- Decorating the Church grounds
- Collecting food for the needy
- Singing choruses at the homes of the Knights' widows at Christmas time
- Conducting money raising activities for citizens with developmental disabilities.
Also, through the financial and insurance operations of the organization, the Knights of Columbus have supported the activities of the Vatican by providing millions of dollars for the operation of radio and TV programs and for the repair of the Vatican buildings.
As Columbus was a faithful son of the Church, so every member of the Knights of Columbus will find in his fraternal affiliation, a means to grow in the spirit of Catholicism and in the hearts of his fellow men.
