John "Jack" Joseph Venesky passed away on October 21, 2009 at Messiah Nursing Home in Mechanicsburg, Pa. Born in Shamokin, PA on April 5, 1932, he was the son of the late Francis (Frank) J. and Catharine (Reardon) Venesky. He lived most of his adult life in the Mechanicsburg area and was employed by the PA Bureau of Corrections in Camp Hill from May 1957 until retirement as a captain in December 1982. He previously worked for the railroad in Harrisburg and Delaware and was a co-owner with his brothers of the Green Leaf Cafe in Ranshaw, PA. After retirement he worked at True Temper (AMES) in Shiremanstown and was employed by the Patriot-News in the Carlisle and Williamsport/Lock Haven areas until 2008.
Jack was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus of Council 4068 of Bishop J W Shanahan assembly #917 of Harrisburg, PA. He was also a member of St. Katharine of Drexel Catholic Church, Mechanicsburg, PA; the Hershey Italian Lodge; life member of Harrisburg Penn Lodge #107 Royal Order of Moose; the Mechanicsburg Men's Club, and the West Shore PA Elks Lodge #2257. He also enjoyed football (Penn State and Eagles) and NASCAR (Rusty Wallace).
Jack was preceded in death by his wife Peggy (Kerstetter) Venesky in 1969.
Funeral services will be held ay 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 in the Myers-Harner Funeral Home, 1903 Market Street, Camp Hill with the Rev. Stephen D. Weitzel as celebrant. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in the St. Edwards Cemetery, Shamokin, PA. A viewing will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday at the funeral home.
