THE KNIGHT LIFE

Newsletter of Knights of Columbus Council #4587

December Meeting - December 18

The December Business Meeting will be held at approximately 7:30 PM in St. Joseph Hall on Thursday, December 18.  There will be no dinner this month.

First Degree January 25

Our council is planning on holding a First Degree Exemplification on Sunday, January 25, 2009 at St. Joseph Hall at Our Lady of Good Hope.  Candidate Call is 1:30 PM, Degree will be held at 2:00 PM.  Please attend the degree if you can and most importantly, ask a Catholic gentleman to join the Knights of Columbus.  If you need a Form 100, please see Mike Thomas, Mark Gapinski, or Matson Matheney.

Free Throw January 31

This year’s Free Throw Competition for the kids will be on Saturday, January 31 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. Our Worthy Recorder, Brian Fogarty, is organizing the event and can use your help.  It

takes a lot of guys to put on the Competition and make it operate as smoothly as Brian has made it operate in years past.  We need guys to help with set up, man the sign in table, and to help score the participants.  Please give Brian (fogarb@yahoo.com) a call at 937-885-1859 if you are able to help. Also, Brian is looking to train someone to coordinate this program in 2010 – this is an excellent opportunity for someone to step up to take over a program that is very popular and brings a lot of joy to our young people.  Please see Mike Thomas or Brian Fogarty if you are interested. The District competition will be February 8 and the Regionals will be February22.

Elder-Beerman Coupon Books

I would really like someone new to step up and chair this event – basically it’s a bit of work twice a year – you don’t need a fundraising background – just an interest in helping the Council.  The next Coupon Book sales effort begins in February for the sale date of February 28. If interested please contact Mike Thomas at kofc4587gk@gmail.com

If you would like to volunteer for times selling in the store we have the following times available:

  • Saturday 2/21: Noon-2 PM and 2 PM -4 PM
  • Wednesday 2/25: 4 PM to 6 PM and 6 PM- 8PM
  • Thursday 2/26: 4 PM to 6 PM and 6 PM- 8PM
  • Friday 2/27: 4 PM to 6 PM and 6 PM- 8PM

Easter Egg Hunt

I know there is someone out there that likes children, candy, eggs, bunnies and especially making children smile? You can be appointed as our Easter Egg Hunt Director.  Our longtime Easter Egg Hunt Director, Charlie Schaffer needs to let the Easter Bunny go for a while but will train a replacement.  This is a great opportunity to run an activity which is very popular – you don’t have to keep do it for 20 years like Charlie has – try it for a year and I bet you’ll want to do it again.  See Charlie Schaffer or Mike Thomas if interested.

Memorial Mass - November 20

Our annual Mass of Remembrance for our departed Knights and Ladies was held at Our Lady of Good Hope on November 20.  Approximately 45 people turned out for the Mass which was celebrated by our Chaplain, Father Ben Bruening. Please keep the repose of our departed in your prayers.

Council 4587 Christmas Dinner

The Ladies of the St. Joseph’s Ladies K of C Auxiliary hosted the annual Christmas Dinner at NCR Country Club in Kettering on Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 6:30 PM.  Attendees feasted on their choice of London Broil or Chicken Parmesan; potato, salad, vegetable, rolls, dessert and beverages.  Door prizes were raffled off and items were collected for the St. Vincent’s Homeless Shelter.  Special thanks to the Ladies for all of their hard work in making this yearly event another great success!

Message from the Grand Knight

I won’t ramble this month - I would just like to take this opportunity to wish each of you, and your families, a Happy and Blessed Christmas Season.  As we are reminded by our priests – let us remember that this is the time of year to rejoice in the gift that has been given to all of us – the greatest Christmas present of all – the birth of our Lord Jesus, sent by the Father to redeem us of our sins.  As we approach the new year of 2009, let each of us renew our commitment to our Faith and our Church.  Let us each strive to live and grow in our Catholic faith and to provide a visible example of the principles of our Order – Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.  May you and yours have a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Yours in Christ, Mike

We need Knights to volunteer to work on several upcoming projects including:

Please consider working on one of these valuable programs for the Council.

Vocations Fundraiser

IMAGINE FOR A MOMENT – A WORLD WITHOUT PRIESTS -  Impossible, you say?  That’s what they said about NUNS back when I was a kid and nuns taught in our schools.  They told us back then that someday there wouldn’t be any nuns and we didn’t believe them. And now today, there are precious few sisters. Our fundraiser to support vocations in our Archdiocese continues through 2008 at the Our Lady of Good Hope Parish!  Please save your cans and deposit them in the collection containers at the storage building and outside of the church before the Saturday and Sunday Masses.   If you have a lot of cans, call DGK Will McCabe at 384-0955 and he will gladly pick them up for you with his truck.  Consider asking your friends to save cans for us too – or perhaps collect them from your workplace if they are not already recycling!  Most importantly, PRAY for men and women to answer the call of God to a vocation!

First Degree Held

The St. Joseph Knights held a First Degree Exemplification at St. Joseph Hall at 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 16, 2008. Six new Knights were admitted to the Order including three Knights for Council 4587.  Please join me in welcoming new 1st Degree Knights Edward Rimkis, Robert J. Towle, and Andrew Voisard, all from St. Henry Parish. Also, please welcome new Knight Robert F. Raney, who joined the Council from a First Degree held on October 29. We are looking forward to these men joining our Council.   Council 4587 will be holding a First Degree on a regular basis (every other month) starting in January.  A schedule of planned degrees will be published as soon as available.

Paul A. Fortener

Please pray for the repose of the soul of our most senior Knight, Paul Fortener, who passed away October 29, 2008 at the age of 96.  Paul had been a member of our Council since almost its inception in 1958 and served almost 65 years in the Knights. Paul was one of the pioneers of our Council and he will be missed.  Please keep Mary Margaret and her family in your prayers as well.

Message from the Grand Knight

During last Sunday’s Homily, Father Tom Nevels discussed Matthew: 25:14-15, 19-21 where we heard the parable of the master who entrusted his servants with talents during his absence.  The servants that used their talents for good were rewarded.  As Father Tom explained, like the servants in that parable, we are all called upon and expected to use our talents as well.  As Knights of Columbus, we are particularly called upon to put our “talents” to good use for our parish and our community.  For us, as Knights, this message could not have come at a more appropriate time as we will be starting several of our programs where your help is needed.  Whether it is one of our existing upcoming programs such as the Veterans Recognition in December, the Free Throw Competition in January, the Pancake Breakfast in February, the Monte Carlo/Casino Night in February at St. Henry, the Easter Egg Hunt in the Spring, the Ohio Charities Ticket sales campaign in the Spring, one of our year round programs such as our pro-life activities or St. Vincent DePaul or a project of your own creation that you’d like the Council to help with – I urge you to “invest your talents” in your Council.

           Yours in Christ, Mike

Football Tickets

The Council sold 30 football tickets in this year’s Football Frenzy.  If you purchased one, thank you for helping the council.  This is the ticket that keeps on giving.  Holders have the chance of winning each week through December 28.  I haven’t seen any winners from Council 4587 on the website yet but there are seven weeks left in the season.   Thanks to Ray Ratay for coordinating and selling tickets and to Mark Gapinski for selling tickets as well.  Winners can be checked at  Football Sweeps– after reaching the website, enter the organization’s password found on the back of your ticket.

Elder-Beerman Coupon Books

This quarter’s round of sales of Elder-Beerman coupon books for Community Day is over.  PGK Kevin Sorice and GK Mike Thomas braved the rain on Saturday morning from 8-10 AM on the day of sale to sell coupon books at the door.  Billing ourselves as “Handsome” and “Charming”, we managed to raise an additional $185.00 at the door, adding to the pre-sales booklet sales. Special thanks to Knights Gerald Sovinsky, Tom DeMange, PGK Bill Brunner, and Bob Knierim and Geri for selling at the door on the days prior to sale.  Also, if you purchased or sold some or all of the booklets I mailed out to you, thank you!  Sales have been a little slow this year, but we still expect to end with a respectable amount of money from the sales.   I would really like someone new to step up and chair this event – basically it’s a bit of work twice a year – you don’t need a fundraising background – just an interest in helping the Council.  If interested please contact GK Mike Thomas .

OLGH Family Fund Raiser

On Saturday, November 8, Our Lady of Good Hope Parish hosted an Italian Dinner Fund Raiser in St. Joseph Hall, complete with spaghetti, breadsticks, salad, beverages, and entertainment.  There were 3 seatings: 5:00, 6:15, and 7:30.  Themed gift baskets were raffled off, a split the pot drawn, and Bingo was held in the Cafeteria. Our council sponsored a gift basket and provided several Knights, Ladies, and children of Knights to work the event.  Thanks to all the Knights and Ladies that made this event a success. Father Tom announced that it made the Parish approximately $11,850 dollars.

Free Throw Competition

Our Worthy Recorder, Brian Fogarty, is organizing the 2009 Free Throw Championship for January and can use your help.  It takes a lot of guys to put on the Competition and make it operate as smoothly as Brian has made it operate in years past.  We need guys to help with set up, man the sign in table, and to help score the participants.  Please give Brian a call at 937-885-1859 if you are able to help. Also, Brian is looking to train someone to coordinate this program in 2010 – this is an excellent opportunity for someone to step up to take over a program that is very popular and brings a lot of joy to our young people.  Please see Mike Thomas if you are interested.

Christmas Card Sales

As part of a “Keep Christ in Christmas” theme, we have been selling Christmas Cards at Donut Sunday during October and November. We have sold approximately half of our stock and are hoping for a sellout.  Please publicize and support this important effort!

Easter Egg Hunt

Do you like children?  Do you like candy?  Do you like eggs? Do you like bunnies? Do you like seeing children smile? Do you get a chuckle from sending children home to their parents with a sugar buzz? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you are probably suited for appointment to the Easter Egg Hunt Director position.

First Saturday Mass

Father Ben celebrates the First Saturday Mass and Fatima Devotion at 8 AM on the first Saturday of each month.  The Rosary is started before the Mass at 7:30 AM and finished at the conclusion of Mass.  Please consider attending one Saturday a month.

Religious Devotions

Consider attending Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesday Nights from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM (Scriptural Rosary at 7 PM) at Our Lady of Good Hope or Eucharistic Adoration on Friday nights at 8:30 at St. Henry.

Projects/Volunteer Opportunities

We need Knights to volunteer to work on several upcoming projects including:

·         Veterans Recognition at Dayton VA in December

·         Free Throw Competition in January

·         MonteCarlo Night at St. Henry in February

·         Pancake Breakfast at OLGH in February

·         OhioCharities Ticket Sales in March

·         Easter Egg Hunt in April

·         Create your own project – it would be great to do something to recognize Christopher Columbus or to have a patriotic activity such as properly burning unserviceable flags – or let’s hear your idea – See the Grand Knight.

Please consider working on one of these valuable programs for the Council.

We will cover the following topics: What the Church teaches about sex education and whose duty it is; how to teach the virtues of purity, chastity and modesty to your kids; what to say, when to say it and how to say it; how much information is too much; preparing your kids for marriage; and dangers to sex education and purity in our present culture.  Join us for a lively discussion on this important topic.  Class started beginning Sunday, November 16 from 9:45am to 10:45am in the teacher’s lounge in the school basement.  Contact Chris Jasek 865-0342 to reserve your space in the class or for more information. Chris reports that it is not too late to begin the class if you are interested.

October Meeting- October 16

The October Business Meeting will be held at approximately 7:30 PM in St. Joseph Hall.  We will meet for dinner and fellowship at 6:30 PM before the meeting.  Consider bringing a prospective member to dinner.

Storage Building Painting

The Storage Building has had the final coat placed on the building – it is a beautiful shade of “Treetrunk Brown”.  We still need to do the trim in a complimentary shade and will do that shortly.  Special thanks to the RUSH group, and to all the Knights that turned out to make short work of this project.  It’s a job of which we can be proud.  Father Tom Nevels was quoted as saying “It’s the best painting that the K of C has done.” Mark Phillips has volunteered to sand and paint the metal doors of the building which will add a nice finishing touch.  Photos of the finished building will be posted on the council website for all to see.

Football Tickets

LAST CALL FOR FOOTBALL TICKETS! The Football Frenzy sweepstake tickets are still available!  For $10, you get TEN chances to win prizes totaling $1000 each week – and you can win more than once!  Prizes are awarded each week from October 26 through December 28! To purchase a ticket, see Ray Ratay.  Tickets are also being sold at Donut Sunday at OLGH.

Our fundraiser to support vocations in our Archdiocese continue through 2008 at the Our Lady of Good Hope Parish!

THE KNIGHT LIFE

Newsletter of Knights of Columbus Council #4587

September Meeting- September 18

The September Business Meeting will be held at approximately 7:30 PM in St. Joseph Hall.  We will meet for dinner and fellowship at 6:30 PM before the meeting.

Starving Artists Festival

The Miamisburg Starving Artists show was held on Saturday, September 6th from 8 am to 5 pm and Sunday September 7 from noon to 5 pm.  Council 4587 once again operated our famous food booth, serving hot dogs, hamburger, brots, and sausages to hungry shoppers and vendors.  By all accounts, it was another successful year!  Booth Manager Matson Matheney was quoted as saying “We finally sold out of all of the food”.  This effort is a joint one between the council and members of Our Lady of Good Hope and is one of our biggest events of the fraternal year.  Proceeds are divided between the council, the church and the Ladies Auxiliary.  This event would not be possible without the large turnout of volunteers needed to set up, staff the booth, tear down, and run various errands during the day – this year nearly 50 people turned out to help!  Space in the newsletter does not permit listing all of the names of those who worked, but I will be submitting the list of names of volunteers on the council website.  Thanks to all of you that volunteered – your help is greatly appreciated.  Special thanks to Booth Manager Matson Matheney for coordinating the entire event and the great help provided by Tom Fahey and Barry Takacs.  Kudos for a job well done!

Pictures are now available!

Storage Building Painting

The Storage Building has had the priming coat of white block filler applied – we are very close to closing on a final color and will need to organize another painting party before the weather gets too cold.  Please consider joining this effort in the coming weeks.

Message from the Grand Knight

Dear Brother Knights:

Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for re-electing me as your Grand Knight.  I am truly honored to serve in this capacity and shall do my utmost to lead the Council well.  I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Deputy Grand Knight Will McCabe for stepping in last month to lead our meeting

Paul Harvey does a radio spot called “The Rest of the Story” In that vein; I’d like to share an interesting story about a boy – “Gus” and his mother.  Gus’ mother had a difficult life.  She was married to a godless, ill-tempered man but suffered without complaint.  Instead, she prayed for her husband and through the power of God, he converted to Christianity as did his own mother. Gus’ mother had two other children – daughters – who entered religious life.  Not so with Gus.  Gus was a man of the world, chasing power, strong drink and hedonistic desires.  Gus’ mother did not give up on him, however.  She prayed for his soul constantly and followed him as he moved from city to city, hoping that he would give up his evil ways.  He traveled as far as Italy.  While in Milan, he met a priest who had a remarkable effect on his life which led to his acceptance of Christ as Savior.  Gus eventually entered the priesthood and ultimately became a Bishop and also a prolific writer.

There are three lessons here – 1) never underestimate the power of a mother’s love, 2) through prayer and God, miracles can happen and 3) a good priest can help change a wayward life.  If you’re wondering who Gus was – you already know him and his mother – Gus was St. Augustine, one of the Doctors of the Church and his mother was St. Monica, whose feast days we celebrate on August 27 and 28.  And the priest – you probably have also heard of him as well – St. Ambrose.

And now you know the rest of the story.

Special thanks to Father Tom Nevels for inspiring this column by his Wednesday sermon.

Yours in Christ, Mike

Message from the Grand Knight

Dear Brother Knights:

I am sending out this edition of the Knight Life a bit early as I will away on vacation during the mid part of August.  By the time you read this, I will be on my way on a vacation trip that includes Egypt, where our forebears in faith toiled in bondage until led from slavery by the Lord; to Israel, including Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth and Galilee where Jesus carried on His ministry, was crucified for our sins, and was resurrected.  I will also be visiting sites in Turkey where the Apostles sowed the seed of the Gospel through the known world.  During his homilies of last week, Father Tom Nevels read and talked about the parable of the sower, which in light of my trip to the Holy Land, impressed upon me that we especially, as Knights, are both the seed and sowers of the seed.  As “seed”, we Knights should stand as examples to our faith community as fertile soil where the seed is bearing great fruit and providing an example to others to emulate.  As “sowers”, we Knights, are called to “work the farm”, spreading the seed wherever we go and helping it grow when we can.  How is your garden growing?

Yours in Christ, Mike

THE KNIGHT LIFE

Newsletter of Knights of Columbus Council #4587

NOTE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT:  I will be out of the country from August 5, 2008 to August 22, 2008 (first at the Supreme Convention in Quebec and then on vacation with my family in Egypt, Israel, Turkey and Greece).  During that time, please direct Knights of Columbus issues to Deputy Grand Knight Will McCabe.

Storage Building Painted

Several Knights and several members of the RUSH group turned out on what started to be a rainy Saturday morning on June 28th to paint the storage building at Our Lady of Good Hope.  We have gotten the first coat of paint on the building and are planning to put a finish coat on the building in August at a date to be scheduled.  Special thanks to Andy Foos, who got the special “block filler” paint donated to us – saving us at least $400.   With the help of the RUSH folks, we were able to paint the entire building during the morning and had pizza at noon.  Thank you to Barry Takacs, Will McCabe, Tim Cool, Larry Van, Rob Quackenbush, Brian Fogarty, Bill Drewry, Joe Nalepka and Bob Kneirim for turning out to paint and also to  Joe Nalepka for arranging for the help from RUSH – Nick, Caroline, Pegge, Sarah, Melissa, Keri and Kim.  I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone – if so, my apologies.

If you are interesting in helping with the finish coat of paint in late August or early September, please see the Grand Knight.

Message from the Grand Knight

Dear Brother Knights:

As we start this new fraternal year of the Knights of Columbus, I would like to thank you all for giving me the honor of serving another year as your Grand Knight.   This Council is truly a wonderful group of men and I have been blessed to be associated with each of you.  A new year is by definition, a time of renewal.  In the space I have here, I would like to begin the new year by encouraging each of you to renew your commitment to this wonderful gift that the Knights of Columbus truly is.    This is YOUR council – please take part in all that it can offer you – involvement will both increase your faith as well as help your parish and your community.  In one of his recent sermons, Father Ben asked how people know YOU and who you are - and asking how they know that you are a Catholic.  As Knights of Columbus, we should stand out as examples of our faith and be known by our actions.

Yours in Christ, Mike

Bocce Tournament

The Sons of Italy John Pirelli Lodge hosted the 14th Annual Bocce Tournament over the weekend of July 11th, 12th and 13th. Council 4587 was well represented at the tournament at Bella Villa Hall in Kettering.  Knights Bill Brunner, Tim Cool, Bill Drewry, Bob Knierim, John Goodwin, and Mike Thomas provided referee services for two of the six bocce courts for the entire weekend play.  PGK Kevin Sorice, a member of the Pirelli Lodge, was this year’s tournament director and did an excellent job keeping things running smoothly.  In addition to bocce, delicious food was available from Carrabas on Friday night and Outback Steak House on Saturday night. The tournament raises money for a number of local charities and Council 4587 was proud to participate in the Sons’ effort and also to raise money for our own charitable events.  I hope this is start of a long-running tradition of working together with the Sons of Italy.  For more information on the Bocce Classic, please see http://www.bocce-classic.com/newsite/

Father Gail Poynter

Council 4587 mourns the loss of one of our beloved priests, Father Gail Poynter, who died on June 27. 2008 at the age of 83. Father Gail served as a priest for 57 years and touched the souls of countless individuals in the Dayton area.  Reception of the Body was held on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at Our Lady of Good Hope with fifteen 4th Degree Knights from Msgr. Buckley, Fr, Kuhlman, and Cardinal Bernadin Assemblies serving in full regalia at the casket.  Burial was at 11 AM at Calvary Cemetery with 4th Degree Knights from Council 4587 serving as pall bearers.  Sir Knights from Council 4587 included PGK/PFN Bill Brunner, PGK/FDD Matson Matheney, Will McCabe, Mark Gapinski, Bob Knierim, Jerry Werbrich, and GK Mike Thomas. Please pray for the repose of Fr. Poynter’s soul.  Donations may be made to St. Vincent Hotel.

Charles “Phil” Schmidt

Council 4587 mourns the loss of Charles “Phil” Schmidt, a 26 year member of the Knights of Columbus who died on June 26, 2008 after a long illness.  Phil’s family received guests at the Gebhart-Schmidt-Parramore Funeral Home in Miamisburg on June 30.  Knights from Council 4587 prayed the Rosary and presented the family with a Resolution of Condolence from the Council.  Mass of Christian Burial was held July 1, 2008 at Our Lady of Good Hope celebrated by Council Chaplain Fr. Ben Bruening, followed by an American Legion Honor Guard Service.  Please pray for the repose of Phil’s soul and for his family at this difficult time.  Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Society, Hospice of Dayton, or the Hithergreen Senior Center, as well as Our Lady of Good Hope.

Increase in Per Capita costs

Delegates at the State Convention in May approved an increase in the “per capita” payment to the State in the amount of one dollar.  It was approved as a surcharge for the coming fraternal year and will become permanent in the State By-Laws next year.  Payment is due based on membership number as of June 30.  The per capita tax is paid for regular and “life” members and will result in an additional cost of approximately $120 for our council.

THE KNIGHT LIFE

Newsletter of Knights of Columbus Council #4587

Painting of the Storage Building

Painting of the storage building at Our Lady of Good Hope is scheduled for the weekend of June 28 and 29th.  The RUSH group has graciously volunteered the time and talents of their youthful members.  We need Knights to volunteer to help paint the building and also to help and supervise the youth.  Also, if you can donate or loan any painting supplies – buckets, drop cloths, brushes, rollers, roller covers and the like – this will save the Council money.  Plans will be finalized at the June 19th meeting.  Since the GK, the DGK and the FS drive trucks – picking up any loaned or donated supplies will not be a problem.  Special thanks to
Joe Nalepka and Kendra and Andy Foos for offering the support of the RUSH group.

June Meeting – June 19

The June Business Meeting will be held at approximately 7:30 PM following Dinner which will be at 6:30 PM in St. Joseph Hall.  Re-elected and newly elected officers will be installed by District Deputy Ed Ponder.  If your wife would like to present you with your jewel, please inform the GK or the DD before the ceremony.

Ed Ponder – DD of the Year

Please join with me in congratulating our District Deputy, Ed Ponder who was named District Deputy of the Year for the entire State of Ohio at the State Convention.

Message from the Grand Knight

Dear Brother Knights:

My space in this month’s newsletter is a bit limited so my comments here will be brief.   We are starting a new fraternal year – there is no better time for each of you to get active within the Council and take advantage of the fruits of our Order – Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.  This past week, I heard two wonderful homilies that tie in together and tie into our mission as Knights.  Firstly, at the First Saturday Mass, Father Ben asked us if we were listening to the call of God and asked if we knew what God was calling us to do.  On Sunday, our guest priest from Sri Lanka asked a question in a similar vein – “Do you believe that God knows YOUR name?”  If you do, in fact, believe in an all-knowing God, then you must conclude he knows your name – and has a mission for YOU.  Each of us joined the Knights of Columbus because we felt God’s call to participate.  Please ask yourself what He is calling you to do.

Yours in Christ, Mike

Message from the Grand Knight

Dear Brother Knights:

It’s hard to believe that almost another year has gone by and that another fraternal year is about to draw to a close.  It has been a singular honor to serve as your Grand Knight during this past year especially in light of the fact that this has been our 50th year in existence as a Council.  As you have seen or will see from the history of the Council as prepared by our esteemed Historian, Sir Knight John O’Gorman, we have a proud history of serving our Church and have accomplished much over the last fifty years and the last year as well.  You should all be very proud of your contributions to the success of the Council.   It is through your individual and collective efforts that has made us a great Council.  I have no doubt that our future is a bright one!  Let’s make the upcoming fraternal year our best ever!  Vivat Jesus!

Yours in Christ, Mike

Measure-Up Campaign

Barry Takacs did his usual fantastic job in organizing, staffing, and running this year’s Measure-Up Campaign.  A special thank you to all of the Knights who turned out at Kroger in Miamisburg on Friday and Saturday to collect.  The monies raised go to the Harry Russell School in West Carrollton to help mentally challenged kids.   We had a record year this year - raising $1646!   Again - thanks to everyone who helped!

50th Anniversary Dinner

I am hoping to have pictures on the website shortly.  Special thanks to Curt and Karen Bailey and John O’Gorman for taking the pictures.  In addition, the 50th Anniversary Program Book and History of the Council will be available on the website as well.

April Meeting

Because of a power failure in the area surrounding the church, we were unable to have a formal meeting following the First Degree Exemplification held on April 17.   A brief meeting was held out of doors to discuss upcoming elections in May and to appoint interested individuals to a nominating committee.  There were no individuals interested in serving on a nominating committee at that time.

State Convention

The 109th Annual Ohio State Convention will be held in Columbus, with the Hilton Columbus being the convention headquarters hotel. The Grand Knight and Past Grand Knight/Former District Deputy Matson Matheney will be attending for Council 4587.  We will report on Convention Events at the June meeting.

Ohio Charity Campaign Tickets

We’ve had another successful year with the Ohio Charity Campaign Tickets.  Ticket sales ran approximately what they did last year.  I’d really like to get an energetic individual to take over the chairmanship of this effort – there is an opportunity to make a great deal of money for the Council with these tickets.  If interested, please see GK Mike Thomas.

 OLGH Storage Building

Joe Nalepka has graciously volunteered the services of the RUSH group to help us paint the OLGH Storage building.  We have identified the paint needed and need to set a date for the painting.  We will discuss this as an agenda item at the May meeting.

Projects/Volunteer Opportunities

We need Knights to volunteer to work on several upcoming projects including:

  • Painting the Our Lady of Good Hope Storage Building – Put your handyman and artistic talents to work to beautify the storage building.  See Mike Thomas.
  • Religious Devotions – please contact Vincent Fugate at 937-291-0898 or vincent2872@sbcglobal.net if you would like to help him.
  • Donut Sunday at St. Henry – if you’d like to help at Donut Sunday at St. Henry (2nd Sunday of each month), contact John Gress at 439-0445. John will need volunteers starting in September.
  • Writing Contest or Poster Contest for Bishop Leibold Students See the GK for details if you would like to work on a writing or poster contest for BLS.

Please consider working on one of these valuable programs for the Council.

 Vocations Fundraiser

The fundraiser to support vocations in our Archdiocese is continuing and is meeting with great support from the Our Lady of Good Hope Parish!

CPR/Defibrillator Training

Special thanks to Dan Wathen for giving up his Saturday on April 5 to train several of us on CPR and Defibrillator.  I encourage ALL Knights to get this training.  If you are interested, please call me or email me.  I will set up another training session with Dan when we have sufficient people.  REMEMBER:  It might be up to YOU to save the life of someone in need!  Please consider getting this valuable training!

Religious Devotions

Consider attending Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesday Nights from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM (Rosary at 7 PM) at Our Lady of Good Hope or Eucharistic Adoration on Friday nights at 8:30 at St. Henry.

First Saturday Mass

Right to Life News

Ohio Right To Life – Jim Schroeder, the Director of Development at Ohio Right to Life will be the guest speaker at DINNER before our MAY Business Meeting.  THIS IS AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO INVITE POTENTIAL NEW MEMBERS!  Mr. Schroeder is coming from Columbus to speak about the state of the pro-life movement in Ohio – what is being done, and what we as a council can do to help defend life from conception through natural death.   Please plan to attend this important talk and be sure to call a buddy and bring a friend.

Donuts at St. Henry

Donut Sunday at St. Henry is held on the second Sunday of each month, except during the summer months.  Donuts will start up again in September. Retention Committee

I am forming a Retention Committee at the May meeting to get in contact with several members of our Council that we have not heard from lately.  If you are interested in helping out, please let the GK know.

Deacon Alan Arber

Please say a prayer for the repose of the soul of Deacon Alan Arber.  His visitation was at St Henry Church on Monday, May 5 and the funeral was held Tuesday morning, May 6.  Deacon Alan Arber was a longtime pillar of the community and exemplified the ideals of a good Catholic. Deacon Arber was a retired deacon at St Henry.  Please keep Deacon Arber and his family in your prayers.

Estate Planning Night

I am trying to get the Estate Planning Night at Our Lady of Good Hope to be held during late May.  The plan is to showcase the various products available to our membership through our Insurance Program, but also to provide advice on estate planning, banking and investments, and funeral planning.

Dave Rickman Farewell

If any member is friendly with Dave Rickman, the current Grand Knight of Council 500 – there will be a “goodbye party and celebration” on May 17, 2008 at 5:30 PM at Marion’s Piazza on North Dixie Drive.  Dave is resigning as Grand Knight and is moving to the Cleveland/Brunswick Ohio area due to a career opportunity within Key Bank. Message from the Grand Knight

Dear Brother Knights:

With this writing, we begin the start of a new era for our Council – our second Fifty Years!  A new year, a new fifty years, but the old mission continues – the hallmarks of CHARITY, UNITY, FRATERNITY, and PATRIOTISM should be and continue to be not just our motto, but our mission.   We should never forget that we are not a club, not a fraternity, not a motley crew of men that come together each month – we are an Order.  As an Order, we have a mission – to serve our priests, our parishes, our communities and our nation.

We had a wonderful celebration on April 12 to mark our 50 years!  Thank you all for coming out and being part of the celebration.  If I have counted correctly, thirty men prior to me have served as Grand Knight.  Each has left their mark upon the Council and that mark, like the proverbial pebble dropped in still water, has rippled through the parishes, the community and perhaps somehow, through our nation.  As I read through the wonderful history of the Council as prepared by John O’Gorman, it occurred to me that although in our history, we used the terms of office of each Grand Knight as a demarcation of periods of time – something else needs to be noted – that while it is incumbent upon the Grand Knight to be the catalyst for action, to lead the Council – the Grand Knight is not the Council, but in fact, what I refer to as “a Knight” is.

Who is “a Knight”?  It’s “a Knight” selling donuts on a Sunday morning.  It’s “a Knight” selling coupon books in Elder-Beerman.  It’s “a Knight” serving at Mass as an Usher, singing in the choir, reading Holy Scripture as a Lector or distributing the Eucharist.  It’s “a Knight” bagging aluminum cans to be recycled on a bitterly cold February morning or working over a hot grill at Starving Artists.  It’s “a Knight” coaching our parish children at school sports.  It’s “a Knight” serving fish or gleefully relieving people of their money at Blackjack to help the school.  It’s “a Knight” toiling at all hours of the day and night to fix the school heater and air conditioning system.  It’s “a Knight” mowing the cemetery.  It’s “a Knight” running the RUSH group.  It’s “a Knight” serving as a Scoutmaster. It’s “a Knight” collecting clothing for St. Vincent De Paul or working in the food pantry.  It’s “a Knight” organizing dozens of people to work at Starving Artists.  It’s “a Knight” organizing the Easter Egg Hunt or Free Throw or the Soccer Challenge.  It’s “a Knight” serving as Financial Secretary or Treasurer or Recorder to keep the records straight.  It’s “a Knight” turning out to decorate the VA or visit an ailing priest.  It’s “a Knight” that’s now older or less able continuing to support the Council’s works with his dues and contributions.  It’s “a Knight” turning out to paint a building or build a fence or cut down a tree.  It’s “a Knight” turning out for Color Corp or the Rosary Rally or the March for Life.  It’s “a Knight” quietly praying.  And it’s not JUST “a Knight”.  It’s also “a Lady”.  Behind many of us are our Ladies.  Ladies who work tirelessly and sometimes invisibly behind the scenes. Making dinner for the meetings.  Working all night making pancakes.  Serving in the PSR or the RUSH group, the Ladies Auxiliary, the Altar-Rosary, and other groups.  Like the Knights, they are serving at the Mass in all the same roles.  They are supporting their Knights and allowing us to do our work.  These Ladies are the wind beneath our wings. We also cannot forget our priests – who support the Knights of Columbus and allow and enable us to serve and for whom we exist.  Who is “a Knight”? Obviously, it’s every Knight in the Council and the Ladies and Priests that support them.  Charity, Unity, and Fraternity is the motto of the Knights of Columbus.  I suspect it is no accident that UNITY is in the middle – bringing Charity and Fraternity together.  It is the UNITY of our Council – Knights, Ladies and Priests – that enables us to perform our acts of charity, defend the faith and spread the Word of God.  This is what we celebrated on April 12 – your work, your efforts and your sacrifices.  For this I salute you all.   May God grant us his grace to continue the work of this Council for the next 50 years!  God Bless and VIVAT JESUS!

Yours in Christ,  Mike

Henry

John Gress has agreed to be our on-site staffing scheduler and coordinator.  This is a tremendous opportunity for our Council to get visibility at St. Henry and be seen helping the parish.   We have established a rotation team of people to work to get us started – if you are interested in working a Sunday, please contact John Gress at 439-0445.  This is especially an excellent opportunity for Knights that are St. Henry Parishioners to help the Council.  Special thanks to Hemmelgarn Family for working the donuts in April.

Message from the Grand Knight

Dear Brother Knights:

We are entering the most holy week of the year – in this Sunday’s readings we saw the beginning of the Passion of Our Lord.   This is a time to consider, reflect, and be thankful. During this holy week, we truly see the love of God for His people. As we re-experience the last hours of Jesus Christ, we see through his passion, his suffering and his resurrection from the dead that God truly does love us and wants us to love Him. Nowhere else is the depth of God’s love so powerfully displayed as it is here – sending his only Son to become man and to die for our sins so that we can be redeemed.

At the Last Supper, our Lord vividly displays his command that we should serve others through the washing of the feet of the apostles. In his Lenten message this year, the Holy Father pointed out that “Christ Made Himself Poor for You”. We, as Catholics, and as Knights, are called to be imitators of Christ. As Knights, our highest principle is that of Charity. The Lenten season should remind us that we are called to be servants, as Christ was a servant and our efforts as Knights should advance the cause of Christ. May you and yours have a Joyous Easter!

Yours in Christ, Mike

LATE BREAKING NEWS: Pope Benedict XVI declared Father Michael J. McGivney venerable on March 15, approving a decree of "Heroic Virtue" for the founder of the Knights of Columbus. This step significantly advances Father McGivney's cause for sainthood.

March Meeting –March 20

The March Business Meeting will be held at approximately 8 PM following the Celebration of the Mass on Holy Thursday.   Because we are, at that point, entering the Triduum, and because of the lateness of the hour, we will NOT be having a dinner before the meeting. My intention is that the meeting will be brief and will cover important items, but because it is our last meeting before the Anniversary Dinner, there are issues that cannot wait.

50th Anniversary Dinner April 12, 2008

We are rapidly approaching a major milestone in the history of our Council!   As I have mentioned in prior newsletters, we will celebrate 50 years as a Council in April.   In order to celebrate this event, we are having a gala Anniversary Dinner at St. Joseph’s Hall at Our Lady of Good Hope on Saturday, April 12, 2008.

I am enclosing a form with the Knight Life for advance reservations.   Dinner is priced at $25.00 per person in advance. Seating is limited by the capacity of the St. Joseph Center, therefore attendance is “first-come, first serve”.   Please reserve your place early to avoid disappointment. Our next Anniversary Dinner will probably be our 75th in 2033, which is a long time to wait if you miss our Fiftieth.

If you have any pictures or historical information relating to the Council – please see John O’Gorman as soon as possible.   We’d like to include it in the history/program or display it at the dinner.

This will be a wonderful event and certainly one not to be missed! We have several exciting speakers lined up including:

·Mayor Dick Church of Miamisburg – who will present a resolution honoring the Council

·Speaker of the House Jon Husted – who will discuss the role of his membership in the Knights had on his business and political career

We also will have TWO state officers in attendance

·State Ceremonials Director LaVerne Fortkamp (who is a Past Grand Knight)

·State Treasurer David Helmstetter

I am looking for a harpist – if anyone knows one that will work for an hour or so before the meal at a reasonable rate (or as a donation), please call me at 859-9950.

We will need Lectors, Ushers and Eucharistic Ministers for the April 12, Saturday 4:30 PM Mass. Please contact me at 859-9950 if you can help.

We also need a crew of people that can help do setup on Saturday afternoon and also individuals that can help with cleanup/teardown on Saturday night. Please let me know if you can help.

Most importantly, though – please plan on attending!   Remember to return your reservation notice as soon as possible!

Ohio Charity Campaign Tickets

Enclosed with this newsletter (if I haven’t already sent them to you) are tickets for the Ohio Charities Campaign. This is one of our most important fundraisers – it would be fantastic if we could approach 100 percent participation in sales by our Council. Please consider buying at least one or two tickets. I need them back by April 12, 2008.  If you have sales ability and would like additional tickets to sell – please see me.

Partnership with RUSH Group

Joe Nalepka has graciously volunteered the services of the RUSH group to help us paint the OLGH Storage building in April or May. We’re still determining the date and trying to identify the best “graffiti-resistant” paint. The more Knights we can get working on the building, the faster it will go. If you’d like to help, let the GK know.

Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts

Our Pancake Breakfast and honoring of the Scout Leaders was such as success that we were nominated for consideration for “Best Youth Activity” by State Youth Director Paul Barko. Congratulations and special thanks to the McCabe family for cooking the pancakes and all the Knights that helped make the morning a success.

Elder Beerman Coupon Books

Thank you to everyone that worked at selling or bought coupon books for the Elder Beerman Community Day Sale. We raised a few hundred dollars. The next sale is in November.

Easter Egg Hunt

Special thanks to Charlie Schaffer for organizing and running the Annual Easter Egg hunt which was held Saturday morning at Mound Park on March 15. A large crowd of children and their parents turned out to look for candy and other goodies placed in the grass.    In addition, the children learned important lessons of the Easter Season because of the use of Resurrection Eggs which each contained an object relating to the Passion, Last Supper, Crucifixion, or Resurrection of Our Lord. Reports have it that our Financial Secretary was attempting to negotiate lower candy prices with the Easter Bunny and lost a couple of teeth.

Projects/Volunteer Opportunities

We need Knights to volunteer to work on several upcoming projects including:

·Ohio Charities Campaign Ticket Sales – Sales are underway.   Please buy and/or help sell tickets for this important fund-raising event. See Mike Thomas.

·Measure Up Campaign – Our annual campaign to help the handicapped is upcoming in the Spring. More information as it is available. Please see Barry Takacs.

·Painting the Our Lady of Good Hope Storage Building – Father Tom has requested that the Knights look into painting/sealing the storage building with graffiti-resistant paint. This effort is slated for April or May (weather permitting). Please lend a hand as we make this building look wonderful.

· Religious Devotions – please contact Vincent Fugate at 937-291-0898 or vincent2872@sbcglobal.net if you would like to help him.

· Donut Sunday at St. Henry – if you’d like to help at Donut Sunday at St. Henry (2nd Sunday of each month), contact John Gress at 439-0445. We are staffed through May but John will need volunteers starting in September.

·Writing Contest or Poster Contest for Bishop Leibold Students – I have a couple of contest possibilities that it would be feasible to do over at BLS if someone would like to help on – or take the lead on. See the GK for details.

Please consider working on one of these valuable programs for the Council.

Vocations Fundraiser

The fundraiser to support vocations in our Archdiocese is continuing and is meeting with great support from the Our Lady of Good Hope Parish! We have currently raised about $75.00 and it looks like we will raise a total of about $1000.00 through the program.

NOTE: Moving the containers out of the storage building to the front of the church and by the recycling dumpster is part of the “Helper” person on Donut Duty. The keys for the storage building will be kept in the same place as the “C” key for the kitchen.

CPR/Defibrillator Training

CPR Training is re-scheduled for Saturday, April 5 for the ushers and then hopefully is expanded out to other parishioners and Knights who wish to learn it. Dan Wathen has graciously offered to teach the class. If you are interested in the training (whether or not an Usher) please let me know.

Religious Devotions

Consider attending Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesday Nights from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM (Rosary at 7 PM) at Our Lady of Good Hope or Eucharistic Adoration on Friday nights at 8:30 at St. Henry.

March Membership Blitz

It is March and that means March Membership Blitz! Please ask someone you know to join our Council!

In conjunction with the March Membership Blitz I will be continuing my “Spend the Grand Knight’s Money” program. Any Knight who signs up THREE new members by March 30 will be awarded with a $25 gift card for dinner at the restaurant of their choosing. The first four Knights that do this will be winners.  Again, let’s not mention this one to my wife.

Ladies Appreciation Dinner

The Ladies Appreciation Dinner was a great success in spite of the snowstorm! Approximately 30 Knights and Ladies braved the weather and made it to St. Joseph Hall for the Dinner and the meeting. The storm came upon us so suddenly that we didn’t have time to reschedule. Special thanks to Kevin Sorice who braved the cold and snow to grill fabulous steaks for all of us.

THE KNIGHT LIFE

Newsletter of Knights of Columbus Council #4587

Our Home on the Web http://home.catholicweb.com/kofc4587

Dear Brother Knights:

As Father Tom mentioned at this weekend’s Masses, this past Sunday was the Second Sunday of Lent.   Father pointed out that Lent isn’t just a time of abstinence and sacrifice, but also a time of recommitment to our Catholic faith.  Lent prepares us to renew our Baptismal promises at Easter.  In this regard, we as Knights should also examine our commitment to our Order.  If you haven’t been very active in the Council, this is an excellent time to “recommit” to the principles of the Knights of Columbus – Charity, Unity, and Fraternity.   Consider becoming a “24 Hour Knight” by setting aside 24 hours in a year for Council projects – you’ll be helping your parish and community and having fellowship with your brother Knights as well.

With that in mind, as you will see further in this newsletter, we have a number of activities coming up that we can use your help on.   Please consider giving a few hours of your time.

Yours in Christ,

Mike

Motion to Allocate Funds for 50th Anniversary Dinner Approved

At the December meeting, a motion was made to empower Chancellor Barry Takacs to commit to and expend funds on behalf of necessary expenses for the 50th Anniversary Dinner to be held on April 12, 2008.  The motion for consideration came before the Council at the January meeting as follows:

Resolved, that One Thousand Dollars ($1000.00) be allocated from the General Fund for use by Chancellor Barry Takacs to secure the services of Chimney's Caterers for providing dinners and associated services for the 50th Anniversary.

This motion was made by PGK Kevin Sorice and duly seconded by Membership Director Mark Gapinski.  It was published in the January 2008 Knight Life newsletter and was voted upon at the January 17, 2008 Business Meeting in accordance with Council Bylaws and passed unanimously by voice vote. Total cost for the catering portion of the event is estimated to be $1600.00 plus 18% gratuities.

If there are any questions, please contact GK Mike Thomas or Chancellor Barry Takacs.

Upcoming Projects and Volunteer Opportunities

We need Knights to volunteer to work on several upcoming projects including:

· Ohio Charities Campaign Ticket Sales – Sales start on February 16.

·  Community Day at Elder-Beerman - We are selling the cost-saving tickets books during February for Elder-Beerman’s Community Day Sale on March 1. Knights are needed to help sell books and man tables at the store.

·  Measure Up Campaign – Our annual campaign to help the handicapped is upcoming in the Spring.  More information as it is available. Please see Barry Takacs or Mike Thomas.

· Painting the Our Lady of Good Hope Storage Building – Father Tom has requested that the Knights look into painting/sealing the storage building with graffiti-resistant paint.  This effort is slated for March or April (weather permitting).

· Easter Egg Hunt – Easter is in March this year and will be here sooner than we realize.  Please call Charlie Schaefer at 937-748-0166 if you can help with this fun-filled event.  The Easter Egg Hunt will be held at Mound Park in Miamisburg on Saturday, March 15.

· Writing Contest or Poster Contest for Bishop Leibold Students – I have a couple of contest possibilities that it would be feasible to do over at BLS if someone would like to help on – or take the lead on. See the GK for details.

Please consider working on one of these valuable programs for the Council.

Vocations Fundraiser

The Vocations Fundraiser is continuing and is meeting with great support from the Our Lady of Good Hope Parish!  The money obtained from the aluminum can collection will be used to support vocations in our Archdiocese.  Please save your cans and deposit them in the collection containers at the storage building and outside of the church before the Saturday and Sunday Masses.   Our goal is to raise $2500 for vocations.  If you have a lot of cans, call DGK Will McCabe at 384-0955 and he will gladly pick them up for you with his truck.

NOTE: Moving the containers out of the storage building to the front of the church and by the recycling dumpster is part of the “Helper” person on Donut Duty.  The keys for the storage building will be kept in the same place as the “C” key for the kitchen.

Pancake Breakfast

The Council had a wildly successful free Pancake Breakfast after Sunday Masses on February 3, 2008 to thank the parish for their support of the Knights of Columbus over the past 50 years.  Many congratulations are due to DGK Will McCabe and his wife Annette for their hard work in making this event a success!  St. Joseph Hall was completely filled after the 8:30 Mass with everyone enjoying pancakes.  Check out the photographs on the Council website!

Also, after both the 8:30 and 11:00 Masses, we honored our Ushers who contribute their time and efforts at Mass.  The Council has purchased personalized Usher Badges which were distributed to our Ushers attending the breakfast.  1

Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts

February 3, 2008 was SCOUT SUNDAY at Our Lady of Good Hope’s 8:30 AM Mass. At our Pancake Breakfast, we honored the Scout Leaders with the presentation of an Easter Cross as a token of our thanks for the work that they do with the Cub Scouts.  The Knights of Columbus are committed to the success of Scouting and I would like to see us increase our support for the Scouting organization in coming years.

Religious Devotions

I am very pleased and thankful that our Lecturer, Vince Fugate has agreed to help develop some religious devotions for the council for which to be involved.  Please contact Vincent if you are interested in working on devotions with him. Consider attending Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesday Nights from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM (Rosary at 7 PM).  During Lent, Stations of the Cross are held each Friday evening at 7 PM.  It would be nice to see a good turnout of Knights at these devotions.

March Membership Blitz

 – Spend the Grand Knight’s Money

The March Membership Blitz is coming up!

Ladies Appreciation Night –Steak Dinner

A steak dinner for the February 21 Meeting will be cooked by Immediate Past Grand Knight Kevin Sorice.  Please join your Brother Knights as we take this opportunity to honor the Ladies of the Council who support us and put up with us throughout the year.  Please bring a side dish or dessert to share with the meal.

Free Throw Competition

The annual Free Throw Competition was held at the St. Henry PAC on Saturday, January 19th from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM.  Thanks to all the Knights and their families that helped with this important event.  We had approximately a dozen kids turn out and everyone had great fun.  Winners in each age/gender category were awarded basketballs!  Special thanks to Brian Fogarty for spearheading this event and all the Knights that helped him.

Council 50th Anniversary Celebration

Our Council will celebrate 50 years in existence in April 2008!  Planning for the dinner continues and there will be a lot to do to make the dinner a success – if you’d like to get involved, please speak to GK Mike Thomas or Barry Takacs.  We already have a special guest speaker lined up.   The date for the dinner, which will be in St. Joseph’s Hall, is Saturday, April 12, 2008.

Chimney’s will be catering the event.

There remains much work to be done – I need people to help on decorations, door prizes, and other ideas to make this a special evening in celebration of this milestone event in our Council’s history.

Also – if you have anything of historical interest to the council, please contact John O’Gorman.  I believe that John can use some help pinning down dates of service of various Grand Knights over the years, so if you can help out there, he would appreciate it.  If you have any past Knight Life issues, especially from the 1980’s, please get with John as soon as possible.

First Saturday Mass

Father Ben has taken over doing the First Saturday Mass and Fatima Devotion.  It would be a wonderful show of gratitude and devotion if as many Knights as possible would attend on a regular basis.  Aptly named, these Masses are on the first Saturday of each month at 8 AM with the Rosary at 7:30 AM. I hope to see you there.

Right to Life News

Ohio Right To Life – I have received a letter from the Ohio Right to Life Society (which has been endorsed by K of C State Pro-Life Director Gary Anderson) offering to make a presentation to our council updating us as to where things stand in Ohio for pro-life efforts, what is being done, and how we as a council can make a difference.  Tentatively, he will speak at our March meeting.

Donuts at St. Henry

Starting in January, our Council began hosting the monthly “Donut Sunday” at St. Henry Parish on the second Sunday of the month.

S.K. James Grimes passed away at the Veterans Administration Hospital on February 2, 2008 at the age of 80.  I had the fortune of getting to know Jim – he helped out on the Elder Beerman coupon book sales last year.   He was an Usher at St. Henry Parish and will be greatly missed.  Please pray for Jim’s family and for the repose of his soul.

Message from the Grand Knight

Dear Brother Knights:

As we end another blessed Christmas season and begin a new year, I am always moved by the feast days that we celebrate after Christmas – the Feast of the Holy Family, the Baptism of our Lord, and especially the Epiphany. I remember receiving, some years back, a Christmas card that showed the three wise men traversing, following the Bethlehem star, with the simple comment that “Wise Men Still Seek Him”.   In thinking of that Christmas card sentiment, it occurred to me that our mission, as Knights, is not so very different than the mission of the Magi. In some ways, they represent the very principles of our Order. They traveled from afar together – no doubt helping each other during their journey, much as we as Knights are called to help each other through our principle of Fraternity.   Balthazar, Caspar, and Melchior had banded together in a common purpose – to seek and to find the Christ-child. Upon finding Him, they stood with Him in support much like a fraternal order. In their mission of seeking Him, they clearly had a sense of Unity. This unity of mission and purpose was further exemplified by their unanimous decision to follow the will of God by returning to their homeland by another route, rather than returning to Herod.   Through their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, the principle of Charity is readily apparent. Their mission to come and aid and support our Lord as Sovereign Priest reminds us of our own mission as Knights to support and assist our priests and parishes. Finally, their adoration of Jesus as Christ the King provides an object lesson to each of us to be strong in our faith.

The card was right – Wise Men DO Still Seek Him.

Yours in Christ, Mike

Also, after both the 8:30 and 11:00 Masses, we will honor our Ushers who contribute their time and efforts at Mass. The Council has purchased personalized Usher Badges which will be distributed to our Ushers attending the breakfast.

Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts

February 3, 2008 is SCOUT SUNDAY at Our Lady of Good Hope’s 8:30 AM Mass. I have met with the Scout Leaders of Pack 248 and have invited them and all of the Scouts and their families to our PANCAKE BREAKFAST at St. Joseph Hall. We are looking for FOURTH DEGREE KNIGHTS to serve as a Color Guard for the boys – Sir Knights, please consider donning your regalia to honor our young scouts. Contact GK Mike Thomas at 859-9950 if you will participate.

Religious Devotions

I am very pleased and thankful that our Lecturer, Vince Fugate has agreed to help develop some religious devotions for the council for which to be involved. Please contact Vincent if you are interested in working on devotions with him.

 Membership Survey

During January, the Membership Retention Committee will be calling each of you to confirm information for our files, to touch base, and to get your ideas. Also, please return the Membership Survey form that was included in the December mailing.

First Degree Team

At the December meeting, a motion made at the November meeting and published in the Knight Life was voted upon to allot $1000.00 for the purchase of necessary items to outfit a Degree Team. This motion also empowers Matson Matheney, our Degree Captain, to decide on which items which are most needed to be acquired.  New members for the First Degree Team have been recruited and we expect to have a fully functioning First Degree Team by February.

Membership News – Spend the Grand Knight’s Money

Continued thanks to Membership Director Mark Gapinski for his good work in recruiting new members. Remember though – we are ALL “membership directors” of the council. And remember the best way to get a man to join the Knights of Columbus is simple – ASK HIM.

A Membership Recruitment flyer was published twice during December in the St. Henry Parish Bulletin.

I’d also like to announce a new Council Program – which I’m calling “Spend the Grand Knight’s Money”. I’m going to put my wallet on the line – any Knight who signs up THREE new members by February 15 will be awarded with a $25 gift card for dinner at the restaurant of their choosing. The first four Knights that do this will be winners. Let’s not mention this one to my wife.

Ladies Appreciation Night

Dinner for the February 21 Meeting will be cooked by Immediate Past Grand Knight Kevin Sorice. Chef Sorice has not yet revealed the menu but we have no doubt that the meal will be excellent. I am sure that Kevin could use some assistant chefs and other helpers to make this meal a success. Please join your Brother Knights as we take this opportunity to honor the Ladies of the Council who support us and put up with us throughout the year.

Free Throw Competition

The annual Free Throw Competition will be held at the St. Henry PAC on Saturday, January 19th from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Setup will be from 6:30 to 7:00, Registration from 7:00 to 7:30, and competitions will run from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. Boys and girls from age 10 through 14 are eligible to participate. Please consider helping out at this event – see Brian Fogerty for more information. Please turn out to cheer the kids and bring your competition-aged children to participate. Winners will go on to Regional and State competitions.

Veterans Hospital Decorating

Volunteers from Council 4587 joined others at the VA Hospital in December to help decorate the Alzheimer’s ward for Christmas. Special thanks to John Goodwin and Michael Cummins for turning out with me for this event. I think we helped add some Christmas cheer to the veterans unable to be home for the Christmas holiday.

At the December 20, 2007 meeting, it was decided to go with Chimney’s for catering services for the event.

The 35th Annual National March for Life will be held in Washington, DC on Tuesday, January 22, 2008, the anniversary of the decision of the United States Supreme Court in the case of Roe v. Wade. Events begin on Sunday January 20 and conclude with the Rally on the Mall and the March for Life to the Supreme Court. Further information can be found at http://www.marchforlife.org/event/index.cfm

I am arranging a date for them to speak to us – as the date is finalized, I will have more information.

Donuts at St. Henry

This week begins a new chapter in the history of our Council. Starting on January 13, 2008, our Council will take over the responsibility of managing the monthly “Donut Sunday” at St. Henry Parish on the second Sunday of the month. The Zengel family has taken care of this duty for a number of years and is now passing it on to us. This is a tremendous opportunity for our Council to get visibility at St. Henry and be seen helping the parish.   We have established a rotation team of people to work to get us started – if you are interested in working a Sunday, please contact Andy Foos at 439-9667. This is especially an excellent opportunity for Knights that are St. Henry Parishioners to help the Council.

Donut Sunday at St. Henry Staffing

January – Mike Thomas/Mark Gapinski/John Gress

February – Michael Cummins

March –  Garcia Family

April –  Hemmelgarn Family

Special thanks to these families for helping out in this mission and for helping Council 4587 become a bigger part of the St. Henry Parish community. Also, please thank the Zengel family for their many years of providing Donut Sunday and thank Father Tom Shearer for allowing the Knights to take over this important task.

CPR/Defibrillator Training

We hope to have CPR training scheduled during February or early March for the OLGH Ushers and other Knights who are interested. More information will be available in the February Knight Life.

Attendance Drawing

There was no attendance drawing during December – our drawing in January will be for THIRTY dollars. Remember – you have to be present at the meeting to win.

 Dues are Due

It’s approaching that time of year again – soon you’ll be seeing mail from our Worthy Financial Secretary, Curtis Bailey asking for your dues. Please help out by returning your dues promptly. Dues payments play a big part in the charitable work that the Council does. If there are any problems, remember that you are part of a brotherhood - please contact Curt or myself.

2008 State Basketball Tournament

I have received from the State, the Official Entry Form for the 2008 State K of C Basketball Tournament. The Tournament will be held on April 5 and 6th. Teams are limited to 15 people who must be members in good standing. The entry fee for the team is $150.00. If anyone is interested in forming a team, please let the GK know. (And no, I do not play basketball).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Everyone knows the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” British Catholics invented it to teach the catechism to their children at the time of the Reformation.

The partridge in a pear tree is, of course, Jesus in the tree of the Garden of Eden.

Each number is a clue to help children remember aspects of our faith:

Two testaments in the Bible;

Three Persons in the Trinity (or the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity);

Four evangelists;

Five golden rings, the Torah, the first five

books of the Bible.

Six days of creation,

Seven gifts of the Holy Spirit,

Eight beatitudes,

Nine fruits of the Holy Spirit,

Ten commandments,

Eleven faithful apostles,

Twelve points of belief in the Apostle’s Creed.

For persecuted Catholics, the beloved carol helped the faithful to stay under the radar and have some fun passing on the tradition to their children.
