St. Joseph’s Council #4587

Serving the parishes of St. Augustine, St. Henry, Our Lady of Good Hope, andthe Miami Valley community.

Grand Knight’s Message

The Christmas Mystery (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 525)

Jesus was born in a humble stable, into a poor family.  Simple shepherds were the first witnesses to this event.  In this poverty heaven’s glory was made manifest.  The Church never tires of singing the glory of this night:

The Virgin today brings into the world the Eternal

And the earth offers a cave to the Inaccessible.

The angels and shepherds praise him

And the magi advance with the star,

For you are born for us,

Little Child, God eternal!

Vivat Jesus!

Resolve to plan your financial future in 2010

By Thomas P. Smith, Jr.

Executive Vice President Agencies and Marketing

Those of us in the marketing and agency area of the Supreme Council office wish you and yours a happy, healthy Christmas season and all the best in 2010. Here’s hoping that your membership in the Knights continues to bring you countless blessings.  Speaking of the New Year, will you take part in the ritual of preparing a set of resolutions for yourself? It’s traditional that many people spend this time of year looking inward, identifying their flaws and resolving to improve these troublesome areas.  It may be that you consider yourself overweight; or that you don’t spend enough time in the gym; or that you haven’t read as many books as you would like. January is usually the time when you endeavor to change all of things that you may not like about yourself.

Allow me to recommend one more area that would benefit from such a review: your financial future.

Are you ready for retirement? Will you have enough money to live on? Are you protected from the financial disaster that a long-term illness can bring? If you were suddenly or unexpectedly out of the picture, could your family survive? Have you adequately prepared for your wife’s future? What about your children’s future?

The one thing we can never change is the relentless march of time. Consider that this season — in addition to a time of celebration and reflection on 2009 — marks another year gone… and you’re another year older. If you have been putting off discussion with a qualified adviser about your finances, I recommend you add that to the top of your list resolutions.

Fraternally,

Pro Life News

From the December 2009 Chaplain’s Report:  A People of Life - The 37th Annual March for Life will be held Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, in Washington, D.C.   The march commemorates the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s infamous Roe v. Wade decision on Jan. 22, 1973, that legalized abortion. Other 2010 demonstrations will be held in San Francisco (Jan. 23) and in Ottawa (May 12-14).  As these events draw near, work with your grand knight and other council members to undertake pro-life activities.  For ideas, and for details on the Knights of Columbus and the Culture of Life, visit www.kofc.org/prolife.

For the Good of the Order

Please continue to pray for our Brother Knights and Ladies who are sick or in distress.  Especially please pray for:

The improved health and recovery after their recent surgeries of Glenn Zink, and Lee Zink.

Father Ben is especially in need of our prayers.  He suffered from pneumonia and cardiac arrest while in Florida last month and was hospitalized.  While being transferred to Christ’s Hospital in Cincinnati, he suffered another cardiac arrest.  He has had multiple surgeries since then.  He cannot take visitors or phone calls in the hospital but can certainly read your cards and letters.  Send your mailings to his normal address and they will be forwarded.  Fr. Ben Bruening, 415 S. Heincke Rd. Miamisburg, OH 45342.

The needs and comfort of Ray Bartlam, Della Mae Cox, Mary Margaret Fortener, Jan Martin, Jeem Newland, and Geri Knierim.  Also for the health, needs, and comfort of family members of our brother Knights, especially Brother Rich Dillow’s sister.

Please contact the Grand Knight at kofc4587gk@gmail.com or (937) 384-0955 if you are or know of a Brother Knight from our Council who is sick or in distress so that he or his family may be added to our prayer list.

CLOSING ODES

In a time when all things religious are being discouraged and swept away, it’s refreshing to know that the Order sponsors the “Keep Christ in Christmas” campaign to remind people that Christmas is above all a holy day celebrating the birth of Christ.

Keeping Christ in Christmas is keeping the very heart and meaning of the Christmas celebration alive: To celebrate the birth of the Son of God.

You may purchase Keep Christ in Christmas cards during Donut Sundays or contact Past Grand Knight Michael Thomas at (937) 344-8490 to place an order.

KNIGHT LIFE – OCTOBER 2009

St. Joseph’s Council #4587

Serving the parishes of St. Augustine, St. Henry, Our Lady of Good Hope and the Miami Valley community.

Grand Knight’s Message

Dear Brother Knights, September was a busy month for Council 4587!  We had an impressive turnout for our major fundraising event of the year—our booth at the Starving Artist’s Festival.  Thank you to all who volunteered, especially to Mat Matheny whose experience ensured this event went off without a hitch, and to Tim and Sharon Orr who put a lot of time and effort into signing up and scheduling volunteers. Additionally, we completed the re-roofing project on the OLGH Storage Building.  Next time you see them, please thank Jim Bornhorst  and Andy Foos for their efforts in seeing this project through.

October’s big event is a special dinner celebrating the 50th anniversary of our Ladies Auxiliary.  We will have a steak dinner, prepared by our Council Chef Extraordinaire Kevin Sorice.  Hopefully, you have already received your invitations and RSVP’d your intentions to attend.

This month’s message: membership, membership, membership!  I wish to echo a recent message from Paul A. Barko, State Membership Director, who writes in part:

In today’s society it appears to be getting more and more difficult to get men to join any organization; which I hear from friends who are officers in the Kiwanis, the Eagles, the VFW, the Catholic War Vets, etc. Why? Well one reason is that many people perceive themselves as being so busy that they have become increasingly skeptical of joining any organization that will take time away from them. So, how do we continue to get busy Catholic men to consider joining the Knights of Columbus?

The pat answer for years has been “Ask them!” While it may get them to join, it appears that it has not gotten many of them to be active and involved members; often leading to withdrawals and/or suspensions down the road. What’s the answer? “Tell them!” Yes, we need to consider telling Catholic men what the Knights of Columbus is about; it’s founding by Fr. Michael J. McGivney, its mission to foster Catholic men in witnessing their faith through acts of charity as a fraternal and unified force in their church and in their community, and its ability to enhance their Catholic faith through active involvement. We need to promote more than membership! We need to promote the meaning and value of active membership in the lives of those men who choose to join!

Look around.  Do you see any practical Catholics who are not with the Knights of Columbus?  Tell them about the KofC, and ask them to join.

Vivat Jesus!

Insurance News

Highlights from the Wall Street Journal on 9-22-09,  page C1:

In a Crunch, Insurers Raise Fees, Trim Sales, by Leslie Scism

1.         To replenish a $9 billion shortfall in their capital structure they are being tougher on things like blood pressure and other risk factors.

2.         They have had a 23% decline in sales for the 1st half of 2009.  They want it that way, believe it or not, to conserve cash.

3.         Insurers are raising prices by several percentage points on new policies, and declining some highly competitive business.  For instance, one company, Protective Life, raised its term insurance rates by

14%, to boost its profit margins

4.         "Table shaving", in which an insurer classifies an applicant's health more favorably, is becoming less common.

5.         Insurer's losses on on commercial mortgage bonds, which have been reclassified "junk"  They have had to raise more than $12 billion in new capital.  Two   companies took $4.4 billion TARP money.  (my note: would you invest in those companies or their products?)

The moral of the story? Stick with KofC. We have remained true to our conservative, boring investment philosophy.  We are here to protect you, our beloved brothers!  Our business is up phenomenally this year.  Jump on the bandwagon!

KNIGHT LIFE - SEPTEMBER 2009
Grand Knight’s Message

Dear Brother Knights, September is a busy month for Council 4587!  I’m sending out our newsletter a little early this month in hopes of reminding, and perhaps inducing, anyone who has yet and is able to volunteer to help out at two major Council 4587 events.

We need volunteers for our Knights of Columbus booth at the Starving Artists’ Festival on September 12th and 13th.  This is one of our major fundraisers to support many of our activities and charitable giving throughout the year.  Tim and Sharon Orr have graciously volunteered to coordinate scheduling volunteer positions and timeslots for the event.  Please contact Tim or Sharon at (937) 865-0537.  You can also volunteer through our website by following the links at http://home.catholicweb.com/kofc4587.  Shifts are two hours in length but even if you can only spare an hour, we’d enjoy your company!  We need volunteers for cashiers, servers, grillers, and general labor.  Please help as you can.

The second major event is on the third weekend of September; re-roofing the garage/storage building at OLGH.  On Friday, September 18th, we plan to tear off the old shingles and on Saturday the 19th, install skylights and new shingles.  Contact Andy Foos or Jim Bornhorst if you can help (walk-ons to the field are welcome too!).

I also have an important reminder and request.  As ambassadors of our Council and the Knights of Columbus, we should be ever vigilant for recruits to our Order.  Sometimes, the hardest thing about recruiting is taking the first step. Recruiting a new member can be as easy as asking them to join. Amazingly, many individuals haven’t joined the Knights simply because they have never been asked to join. When the opportunity arrives, take the initiative and start a conversation with a prospect. There is a new incentive to recruit new members to the Order.  See the notice in the Membership Program section of this newsletter.

And finally, on behalf of Council #4587 I’d also like to give a hearty Well Done! and thank you to those who helped at the Kercher Cabin Dedication on August 30, especially to our chefs Kevin Sorice and Barry Takacs, and to Mat Matheny whose experience and direction helped pull off our support of the Miamisburg Historical Society’s event without a hitch.  Many from the Council turned out to help, which made light work of our task and an enjoyable afternoon.  Thank you all!

Vivat Jesus!

Ladies Auxiliary News

The officers of the Ladies Auxiliary met this past month to plan our dinners and upcoming events. A few changes were decided for this year; so please come to the meeting to hear of our proposals and watch the Knight Life each month.  Janet Brunner is making Bar-B-Q for our September meeting dinner.  Please bring a covered dish to share (even the men) and feed 10-12 people.  There are times when only a few ladies come and there are barely enough covered dishes to feed all who attend.

Rosary Rally

This is a great opportunity to bring families and their clergy together in a public place to praise God and honor His Blessed Mother.  Hopefully these prayers will be instrumental in bringing our families and the church closer to God, heal the many wounds in our community and the world today, and bring God’s peace to all nations!  The Rosary Rally starts at 3:00 pm on October 11 this year at the University of Dayton Arena on Edwin C. Moses Blvd. in Dayton, Ohio.  Admission and parking for the event is free and open to all.

KNIGHT LIFE - AUGUST 2009

 Grand Knight’s Message

Brothers, you may have noticed, no doubt, the new look of our newsletter.  This came about in order to not only simplify the Council’s communications with you but to facilitate and reduce the amount of time it takes to put this newsletter together.  Hopefully, it will also help to better keep you informed of our Council’s progress toward meeting its goals.  The newsletter has been designed toward that end to correspond with the different programs and activities our Council is engaged in.  Newsletters will still be sent out monthly but, at the beginning of each quarter, an expanded and more detailed newsletter will provide information about the various activities, when and where it will take place, how many members are needed to participate, and how many have already volunteered to help.  I hope that this format will give our members a more distant view of the planning horizon; so that you may be better able to see where the Council’s needs are and plan your time for volunteering as you are able or desire.

This month’s newsletter is a short one.  We are still working out the details of our programs for the upcoming fraternal year, so there is little to communicate at this time.  If you have any program/activity suggestions for the Council, now would be a good time to submit them.  Next month’s newsletter will better inform the membership on the Council’s planned program activities and its progress toward completing them.  The Council’s more immediate needs for your time involve our involvement with the Kercher Log Home dedication on August 30 and the upcoming Starving Artist’s Festival.

We will continue with our usual fundraising activities, including:

Pennies for Heaven — save and donate your daily spare/loose change to support vocations.  Collections are made during the regular business meetings and during Donut Sundays.

Aluminum can recycling fundraiser for vocations — collection carts are located on the north end of the OLGH storage building.  Please continue to collect aluminum cans and drop them off when you come to Mass.  Proceeds from this fund support parishioners who are pursuing the religious life.

Donut Sunday — stop in after Sunday Mass for coffee, donuts, and fellowship.

Elder Beerman coupon books — we need volunteers!  See page 4 for available timeslots and dates.

Ohio Knights Football Frenzy — for the low price of $10, you get the opportunity to get discounts on purchases AND the opportunity to win prizes ranging from $400 to $20 EACH WEEK.  Each ticket consists of ten entries (one per week for ten weeks) from November 1, 2009 through January 3, 2010.  It's like 10 lottery tickets in one!  And, to make it even easier, you can check the results on the web (www.footballsweeps.com).  These opportunities are available during Donut Sunday or you can contact our worthy Financial Secretary, Mike Thomas.

July 16 Meeting

Our regular business meeting will be at 8:00 pm on July 16, 2009 at OLGH St. Joseph Center.  Your newly elected Grand Knight will be flying in from Minneapolis that evening and, God willing and the creek don’t rise, should be in town on time to start the meeting.  However, in the event that circumstance prevents my arrival on time, and because our newly elected Deputy Grand Knight will be on vacation, I’ve asked our newly elected and most worthy Chancellor to ensure the meeting is started on time in the event of my absence and/or tardiness so as to not prolong the separation from your families any longer than is necessary.

Re-roofing of the Storage Building

Father Tom Nevels has requested the Knights provide the labor for the much needed re-roofing of the OLGH storage building.  Andy Foos and Jim Bornhorst have been working hard to produce cost estimates and project plans to accomplish this.  We will be beginning this project as soon as we get approval to proceed.  We will need Knights to volunteer to work both on the roof and on the ground.  We expect to start either in July or August (save your sauna and spa dollars!).  If you would be willing to help, please contact Andy Foos.

Pope Portrait Raffle

The Greater Dayton Chapter is again raffling off a portrait of Pope Benedict XVI.  This would look great in the entrance of any of our parishes or in your home.  Tickets are $5.  See the FS.

By-Laws Revision

The Past Grand Knights club took on the task of updating the By-Laws of the Council.  The changes proposed were read at the April Council Meeting and approved by unanimous vote of the members present in May.  They were sent for review to the State Advocate and Supreme Advocate.

Bocce Classic XV

Our Council will again be providing referees to the John Pirelli Lodge of the Sons of Italy’s Bocce Classic held on July 10, 11 and 12, 2009.  If you did it last year, we need you again!  If you haven’t done it – please consider being a referee.  The task is not complex – all you have to do is point.  See PGK Kevin Sorice if interested.

First Saturday Mass

Father Ben celebrates the First Saturday Mass and Fatima Devotion at 8 AM on the first Saturday of each month.  The Rosary is started before the Mass at 7:30 AM and finished at the conclusion of Mass.  Please consider attending one Saturday a month.

Religious Devotions

Consider attending Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesday Nights from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM (Scriptural Rosary at 7 PM) at Our Lady of Good Hope or Eucharistic Adoration on Friday nights at 8:30 at St. Henry.

Projects/Volunteer Opportunities

Have ideas for a special or new on-going project that will benefit one or all of the parishes we serve?  Propose it at our next meeting!

We need Knights to volunteer to work on several upcoming projects including:

·    Support of Bishop Leibold School

o  After School Homework Helpers

Description - This is independent study time for students to catch up on homework or work in groups to study for test or work on group projects.  It is very well attended with between 20-30 kids each time. Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:00 -4:00 in the East Campus cafeteria

Volunteer Opportunities - Minimum of 2 adults monitor students and ensure general order and quiet in the cafeteria.  Students may ask for assistance which the volunteer can provide or refer them to the program monitor for assistance.  Volunteers must have completed the child protection class as well as have fingerprints on file.  Volunteering can be any amount of time, once a week, once a month, once a quarter.  Any support would be greatly appreciated.  Contact Becky Kondritz at 432-0251 or Pat Foley at 886-0319.

o  Playground Monitors

Description - West campus students,

Grades K - 3, play on a roped off area of the parking lot during lunch.  Teachers currently monitor the students, thus cutting into their lunch time. 11:30 - 12:30 Monday - Friday at the West Campus

Volunteer Opportunities - Minimum of 2 adults monitor students and ensure general order on the playground. Volunteers must have completed the child protection class as well as have fingerprints on file.  Volunteering can be any amount of time, once a week, once a month, once a quarter.  Any support would be greatly appreciated. Contact Paul Beyerle at Bishop Leibold School if interested.

Vocations Fundraiser

Our fundraiser to support vocations in our Archdiocese continues through 2009 at the Our Lady of Good Hope Parish!  Please save your cans and deposit them in the collection containers outside the storage building (garage) before each Mass.   If you have a lot of cans, call GK Will McCabe at 384-0955 and he will gladly pick them up for you with his truck.  Consider asking your friends to save cans for us too – or perhaps collect them from your workplace if they are not already recycling!  Most importantly, PRAY for men and women to answer the call of God to a vocation!

KNIGHT LIFE – JUNE 2009

Changing of the Guard

With the coming of July 1, we will have a new slate of officers leading our Council. I offer my hearty congratulations to each of them as well as my prayers for their success.  To have served as your Grand Knight for two terms has been a singular honor in my life and I thank each of you for your support, your hard work and your prayers over the last two years.  To associate with each of you has inspired me to be a better Catholic, a better father, a better husband and hopefully a better individual.  I am truly proud and grateful to have had the opportunity to be your servant in this role. Our council is truly a wonderful group of Catholic men and women dedicated to service to our priests, our church, our community and our nation.  Our success as a council is a testament to the work and support that each of you has provided.  I ask that you offer that same support, guidance, advice and mostly your prayers to Grand Knight Will McCabe and his officers that you have given me.  Lastly, I would like to thank Father Tom Nevels, Father Tom Shearer, Father Ron Combs and Father Ben for all of their support over the past two years. We are truly blessed to have the support of such wonderful priests and our council will continue our mission to help them in any way we can.

Again, you have my grateful thanks. God Bless each of you.

Mike

Motion to Support Bishop Leibold School

At our March Council meeting, Principal Paul Beyerle of Bishop Leibold School and Mindy Leichty, President of the School Board presented a request to the Council for financial support.  The school has offered to recognize support from our Council by placing our name on the school library.   The Trustees, Treasurer and Grand Knight met at the Grand Knight’s house to explore possibilities of support and have recommended that we donate $500 from the operating fund to support the library. This was introduced as a motion at the April meeting, and is published in this Knight Life.    I personally urge your support for this gift – support of our young people is one of the greatest gifts the Council can bestow – and in return, many of these youth may become future Knights of Columbus. The population of our Council is aging, with 64% of our membership being 50 or older.  The average age of a member of our Council is 56.  Only 4% of the Council is younger than 30.  We need to reach out to our youth to continue to ensure a vital and active Council.

Election of Officers

Election of Officers for the 2009-2010 year will be held at the May meeting on May 21, 2009.  It has been a tremendous honor to serve as your Grand Knight for the past two years, and as is generally customary, I will be stepping down from the podium and passing the gavel to a successor.  I am publishing the Grand Knight’s slate of candidates below.  Nominations can also be taken from the floor.  Officers will take office on July 1, 2009 and serve until July 1, 2010.  Installation of officers by Worthy District Deputy Ed Ponder will occur at the July meeting on July 16, 2009.

Ohio Charities Tickets

The Ohio Charities Tickets campaign has ended.   THANK YOU to all of you Knights that supported this important fundraiser.  Through your support, and the support of Bishop Leibold School in partnering to sell tickets, we were able to meet our second level quota of THREE TIMES MEMBERSHIP and sold a total of 373 tickets!

OLGH Capital Campaign - UPDATE

The motions to transfer the Vanguard Fund from the Scholarship Fund to unrestricted use and the subsequent transfer of the shares of the Vanguard Fund to Our Lady of Good Hope Parish for capital debt reduction was duly voted upon and approved.  The Grand Knight, the Treasurer, and the Financial Secretary are working through the details of the transfer.

Measure Up Campaign

Our annual Measure Up Campaign to collect donations for children with mental and physical challenges was held on May 1 and 2. The proceeds are used to support the Special Olympics in Miamisburg.  As in prior years, we had Knights standing outside of the Kroger on South Heinke Road in Miamisburg at the entrances and egresses of the store.  This is a great cause and is in so many ways, what the Knights of Columbus is all about. As each Knight knows, this is the lesson of Charity, the first principle of our Order - which is, of course, the greatest of all virtues.  Special thanks to Barry Takacs for organizing the event and to FS Curtis Bailey and Treasurer Tom Fahey for leading the charge to count the proceeds.  My deepest thanks to all the Knights and Ladies that turned out to stand outside the store and collect. The amount collected will be reported at the May meeting and in the June Knight Life.

Paul R. Gruhler Awards Banquet

The Gruhler Awards Banquet was held at Council 1610 in Middletown on May 17, 2009 at 6:00 PM.  Last year, our own Bill Brunner was the Award Winner.  Dinner is hand-carved Prime Rib.  This year, two Knights from the Council were nominated for the Award: Matson Matheney and Curtis Bailey.  Please congratulate Matson and Curt on their nomination for this honor.

Pope Portrait Raffle

The Greater Dayton Chapter is again raffling off a portrait of Pope Benedict XVI.  This would look great in the entrance of any of our parishes or in your home.  Tickets are $5.  See the GK.

State Convention

Grand Knight Mike Thomas and Deputy Grand Knight William McCabe will be attending the 110th Annual Convention of the Ohio State Council of the Knights of Columbus in Cincinnati on May 22, 23, and 24th.  Deputy Grand Knight McCabe will present a report of our activities at the June meeting.

Bocce Tournament

Council 4587 has formed a Bocce team made up of the following Knights: GK Mike Thomas, PGK Kevin Sorice, Bob Towle, Tom Fahey, John Goodwin, Andy Sievers and Caitlin Thomas.  The team made their debut at the Sons of Italy Bella Villa Hall on May 9 at a   benefit for the American Cancer Society and very nearly won a couple of the matches.

By-Laws Revision

The Past Grand Knights club took on the task of updating the By-Laws of the Council.  The changes proposed were read at the April Council Meeting and sent to all members through e-mail or US Mail.  Please refer any comments to Kevin Sorice or Bill Brunner.  The current By-Laws are now on the Council website.  The password is CHARITY.

Attendance Drawing

The Attendance Drawing was held at the April meeting and Steve Foley’s name was drawn.  Unfortunately for Steve, he was not in attendance or he would have won $120.00.  Next month’s drawing will be for $130.00
