Saint Luis Batis Sainz was born in San Miguel del Mezquital, Zacatecas, Mexico in the Archdiocese of Durango on September 13, 1870. Father Batis, a member of Knights of Columbus Council 2367, was a parish priest in San Pedro Chalchihuites, Zacatecas. As a priest, Father Batis Sainz performed his ministries with a special devotion to youth. He was a guide for them, a surrogate father who helped them mature spiritually and culturally. Specifically, Father Luis knew how to instill in youth the spirit of a Christian heroism in the ardent profession of their faith.
Barely fifteen days after the suspension of public worship had been ordered by the bishops, Father Luis was taken prisoner. When the soldiers were looking for him, Father Luis revealed himself be shouting out, “May God’s will be done. If He should will it then I will be one of the martyrs of the Church.”
On the following day, August 15, 1926, Father Batis Sainz was taken, along with his close companions Manual Morales, Salvador Lara Puente and David Roldán (who was just 19), to the place known as Puerto de Santa Teresa. The four were placed before a firing squad. Father Luis begged the soldiers to spare the life of Manual Morales, a husband and a father. Morales declared, “I am dying for God. God will care for my children.” Father Luis smiled at him, gave his friend absolution, and said “See you in heaven.” Seconds later, the four were martyred on the feast of the Assumption.
