Haverstraw Council 581 Knights of Columbus at 56 West Broad St, Haverstraw, NY 10927 US - Saint José María Robles Hurtado (1888-1927)

Saint José María Robles Hurtado (1888-1927)

Saint José María Robles Hurtado was born in Mascot, Jalisco, Mexico in the Diocese of Tepic on May 3, 1888. Father Robles, ordained in 1913 and a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1979, was a parish priest in Tecolotlán, Jalisco. He founded the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Guadalajara at the age of 25. A fervent apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Father Robles wrote small pamphlets to spread the devotion.

On June 25, 1927, Saint José was arrested while preparing to celebrate Mass. Shortly before execution he wrote:

            I want to love your Heart, my Jesus, with delirium;
            I want to love your Heart with passion;
            I want to love your heart until the moment of my martyrdom.
           With all my soul, I bless you, my Sacred Heart.
           Speak to me.

Immediately afterward his heart was able to enter eternal union with the Sacred Heart. He was hanged from an oak tree, but not before he had forgiven his executioners and offered a prayer for his parish. He even placed the rope around his own neck so that none of his captors would be guilty of murdering a priest. All of this took place in the mountain range of Quila, Jalisco in the diocese of Autlán on June 26, 1927.
