Haverstraw Council 581 Knights of Columbus at 56 West Broad St, Haverstraw, NY 10927 US - Saint Miguel de la Mora de la Mora (1878-1927)

Saint Miguel de la Mora de la Mora (1878-1927)

Saint Miguel de la Mora de la Mora was born in Tecalitlán, Jalisco, Mexico in the diocese of Colima, on June 19, 1878. Father de la Mora, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2140, was the chaplain of the Cathedral of Colima. He was a simple, discerning priest, orderly and efficient, yet always showing his great love for the poor, ready to serve them at any time.

Colima was the first state in the Mexican Republic where the government demanded the registration of priests for licensing to allow them to practice their priesthood. The bishop (and his priests) vehemently protested this regulation stating that they would undergo any suffering before they would allow themselves to be traitors to their faith and unfaithful to their Church.

The government responded by arresting and exiling priests who did not comply. Father Miguel, like others, went into hiding but continued to serve the faithful. He, and other priests, signed a letter opposing the anti-religious laws imposed by the government. He was soon discovered and threatened with imprisonment if he refused to celebrate mass in the Cathedral, an act that was no longer permitted by the bishop as long as the regulations were in effect. To escape the pressure and threats of the military authorities, he decided to flee the city. On his way out he was captured and taken to the general who ordered that he be shot. With his brother Regino looking on, Saint Miguel walked silently to the site of his execution, took a rosary from his pocket, and as a sign of his faith and his love for Mary he began reciting it. With the rosary in his hand and with a prayer on his lips, he was executed by a single shot fired by a soldier at noon on August 7, 1927.
