to crown our priesthood with martyrdom.

For that reason, when he had to leave his parish and hide among the population of Ejutla, and when federal troops arrived to arrest him, his face shone with peace and joy and his heart overflowed as he said, “We see ourselves in heaven.” After a warrant was issued for his arrest, he took refuge in the Colegio de San Ignacio. Rather than escape when the soldiers arrived, Father Aguilar Alemán remained at the seminary to burn the list of seminarians and thus protect their identities from being revealed. At dawn on the 28th day of October, 1927 he was lead to the plaza in Ejutla.
His executioner tossed a rope over the heavy branch of a mango tree, made a noose, and placed it around the neck of the priest. He publicly forgave his executioners. However, his captors decided to toy with him and put his convictions to a test. They viciously asked him, “Who lives?” The answer they wanted from him was “Long live the supreme government.” Instead, Father Rodrigo responded “Christ the King and Our Lady of Guadalupe.” They pulled on the rope, suspending Father Aguilar above the ground. They lowered him and asked, “Who lives?” Again Father Rodrigo responded “Christ the King and Our Lady of Guadalupe.” Once again he was suspended, lowered and asked “Who lives?” For a third time, Father Rodrigo answered “Christ the King and Our Lady of Guadalupe.” This time he was suspended again and entered into the kingdom of heaven.
