Haverstraw Council 581 Knights of Columbus at 56 West Broad St, Haverstraw, NY 10927 US - Saint Pedro de Jesús Maldonado Lucero (1892-1937)

Saint Pedro de Jesús Maldonado Lucero (1892-1937)

Saint Pedro de Jesús Maldonado Lucero was born in the city of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico in the archdiocese of Chihuahua on June 15, 1892. He was forced to study for the priesthood in El Paso, Texas because of the turmoil in Mexico. In the seminary he chose as his goal “To always have my heart in heaven, in its shrine.” After his ordination, he returned to his home in 1918 despite the dangers.

Father  Maldonado, a member of Knights of Columbus Council 2419, served in the parish church in Santa Isabel, Chihuahua. As a priest he was in love with Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament, a constant worshipper of the Eucharist he conducted many nocturnal adorations with his faithful.

On Ash Wednesday, February 10, 1937 he celebrated the Eucharist and distributed the ashes. He was getting ready to hear confessions when a group of armed me appeared to arrest him.

Father Pedro took a pix with consecrated hosts with him and followed his captors. Arriving at the municipal hall the police insulted and beat him. He was shot once in the forehead resulting in a fractured skull and causing his left eye to fall out of its socket. The priest, bathed in blood, fell, semi-conscious, causing the pix to open and the hosts to fall out. One of his executioners gathered them and cynically told the priest “Eat it.” Thus, by the hands of an executioner, his life’s desire, to receive the Eucharist before death, was fulfilled.

In agony he was taken to the public hospital in Chihuahua. On the following day, February 11, 1937, the anniversary of his priestly ordination, Saint Pedro joined the ranks of the martyrs “in heaven, in its shrine.”
