Thomas Cajetan Kelly, O.P. has served as archbishop of the Louisville Archdiocese since February 1982. He was appointed archbishop by Pope John Paul II in December 1981. Prior to his appointment as archbishop, Kelly was elected in March 1977 to a five-year term as chief administrative officer and general secretary of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) and the United States Catholic Conference (USCC) in Washington, D.C. Diocese of Covington The history of Catholicism in Kentucky can be traced back to the year 1785, when a group of Maryland Catholics migrated to central Kentucky. In that same year, the first Catholic parish in Kentucky was established at Marion County and placed under the patronage of the Holy Cross. Diocese of Owensboro The Diocese of Owensboro was established in 1937 and encompasses the western third of the state of Kentucky. It includes thirty-two counties and covers approximately 12,500 square miles. According to a 1990 study by the Glenmary Research Center, the diocese is fifty nine percent rural, and Catholics comprise about 6.2 percent of the population, or 48,222 people (approximately 21,000 households).
