Welcome to Magnificat Web in the Name of the Lord!
We are the Gentle Woman, Mother of Mercy Chapter of Magnificat, and we want you to know how glad we are that you are here! We pray that you will feel the presence of Jesus as you experience our website. The Magnificat name comes from the great hymn of praise (luke 1:46-55) that the mother of God prayed in exaultation while visiting her cousin Elizabeth. Both women were deeply touched by God. Elizabeth was bearing a long awaited child and Mary was carrying within her womb, the Son of God. They came together to help and encourage one another, to sing, to pray, to share a common table, and to be strengthened for all that was to come.
How Magnificat Began
Two hundred Catholic women from all walks of life crowded into a Knights of Columbus hall on October 7, 1981, to have breakfast and to hear Patti Mansfield witness to the power of God in her life. The meal had been lovingly organized and prepared by a core group of leaders from some 40 women's prayer groups involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the New Orleans area.
The two hundred women who left the hall that day were filled with a joy that only the Holy Spirit can give; that is. a deeper awareness of God's loving presence in their lives and a burning desire to share this wonderful experience with more and more of their sisters in Christ.
What began with a modest breakfast on October 7, 1981 is today a global ministry to Catholic women known as 'Magnificat' with chapters all over the world. It is in the spirit of the biblical encounter of the 'Magnificat', the the women of Magnificat reach out to each other in love, prayer and joyful service at the Magnificat meal. The highlight of the meal if the testimony of an individual who gives her own "Magnificat' to God by sharing how God has deeply touched her life.
Membership is of a spiritual nature and there are no dues. It is open to all women who agree to pray for Magnificat and its members and who strive to incorporate into their lives the objectives of Magnificat. Members are encouraged to grow in holiness through frequent participation in the sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation, study and daily reading of the Holy Scriptures, love for Mary as the mother and model of all Christians, especially women.
