3. What is a Marianist priest?

| A Marianist priest is, above all, NOT someone who is somehow holier, or higher, than the rest of his Marianist Brothers. He has the same vows and the same duties as the rest. |
|

| The role of a priest in the Church is primarily the administration of the Sacraments (although he has other duties as well). A Marianist who wishes to serve by bringing the Sacraments -- in addition to all of his other duties as a Marianist Brother -- can offer to become a Marianist priest. |

| When a person becomes a Marianist priest, he does NOT stop being a Brother, because his commitment to the vows does not stop. Priesthood for a Marianist is an EXTRA SERVICE, not something special, not a privileged position in the Congregation. |
|

| One with a good understanding of this will not join the Society of Mary in order to become a priest. He will join in order to become a Marianist. Full stop. And then, he can offer to do the extra service of priesthood if his Brothers accept him for this role. |

| A Marianist priest in Eastern Africa should not expect to be put in charge of a parish. Rather, he will be the chaplain for the Marianist community to which he belongs, and for the school or project where he works. |
