4. How can I join?

First: are you qualified? You must be living in Kenya, Malawi, or Zambia. You must be a baptized, confirmed, and unmarried Catholic young man. You must have a good reputation among those who know you. You must have completed high school and attained a satisfactory result (details depend on the country). You must have no other commitments, such as military duty or unpaid debts.

Second, you need to write to the vocation director in Kenya, Malawi, or Zambia. See "contact us" for addresses, and choose the one nearest to you.

The first thing that will happen is that you will be asked a number of questions about yourself and your family.

If everything looks okay, and you have completed your secondary school, you will be invited to visit the Marianists for an orientation program. Normally this will last for 5 to 7 days.

After that, you must apply for each step, and be approved for it. These steps are:
1. Participate in a "live-in" experience; that is, live in a Marianist house for several weeks and see what it is like to pray with us and work with us. This will allow you to see whether this is really what you want to do with your life.

2. Spend about 9 - 10 months in Nairobi as an Aspirant. During this time, you will be sent to do ministry of various kinds in the city every morning, and be given lessons in the afternoons.

3. Become a Novice. This means two years of formal training in methods of prayer, in liturgy, in what it means to be a Marianist, etc.

4. At the end of the novitiate period, you make the vows. At this point you make them for only one year, in order to give you a chance to change your mind as you experience more of our life. It is this act of making vows that makes you a member of the Society of Mary.

5. These temporary vows cannot go on forever, however. After about 6 years (it is flexible) you can make vows for life and become a permanent member of the Society of Mary. At that time you will add a fourth vow, that of Consecration to Mary.
