TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION:
The roots of today's "birthday of the Church" are in an ancient Jewish festival of springtime harvest, seven weeks after Passover. Now, seven weeks after Easter, our great fifty days of rejoicing come to an end. In the countries where the Church first came to life, this is a time of harvest, and the first fruits appear: apricots and lemons, cherries and strawberries. Even in our gardens, herbs are abundant and asparagus, that close relation of the Easter lily, comes fresh to our tables. The earth is laden with so much new life, and that has always been a sign to Christians of Easter's glory.
Pentecost means "fifty" and our fifty days of Easter joy are complete. This Sunday is a day to savor the glory of Easter once more: picnics and cookouts, walks by the water, time in the garden--are all ways of extending the feast. Notice the paschal candle today, still burning during Mass. Our Easter celebration now complete, the candle will soon be moved to a place near the baptismal font, and be lighted at baptisms and funerals as a silent witness to Christ's abiding presence.

Hunger USA
Hunger here in the richest nation in the world? Impossible, one might think. But the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ annual Hunger and Homelessness Survey makes it clear that hunger and food insecurity (not always having access to enough food to meet basic needs) not only exist, but are on the rise. The increase is reflected in the fact that the two dozen cities surveyed found that requests for ...
The Promise of Resurrection
For Christians throughout the world the dawn of Easter morning marks the celebration of the triumph of life over death, as we affirm our faith in the resurrection of Jesus. Religious faith is easily caricatured these days, dismissed as a failure of nerve before the ambiguities of real life or, more sobering, is identified with a fanaticism that seeks to assert its dominance over nonbelievers. The ...
Hocking the Future
The United States has enjoyed an extraordinarily long period of economic growth with very little inflation. There have been setbacks caused by high oil prices, the attacks on 9/11 and the dot-com crash, but in general there have not been the wide swings from high inflation to deep recession that were common in past decades. Despite this good news, there are two major economic problems with this ...

Putting the Pieces Together
Putting the Pieces Together
Being in love is something all of us look forward to. When you spend time with that special person, it can be a great thing. The only problem is that sometimes we fall too fast or put too much into one relationship, and the pieces don't seem to create a pretty picture.
Danny's Magic Drawings
“But it’s just a picture,” said Danny. He sat on the sidewalk in front of his house. Green and purple sidewalk chalk smudged his face and t-shirt.
During my freshman year in college, I set out to lose about ten pounds. What began as a simple plan to get fit spiraled into a dangerous obsession. Somehow I became so compulsive about exercising and dieting that I developed an eating disorder called anorexia...
