Metropolitan Catholic College Librarians Chapter at c/o Lois Cherepon, Staten Island, NY 10301 US - St. Peter's College Fall 2007 Meeting

The Fall 2007 meeting of the MCCLC took place on September 28th in the Theresa and Edward O’Toole Library of Saint Peter’s College, Jersey City, NJ. Librarians from Seton Hall, St. John’s, Union County, and Saint Peter’s took part in the day’s events. After a morning meet-and-greet, the speaker was Fr. Raymond Schroth, a professor of Humanities at Saint Peter’s College, Jesuit priest, past administrator and faculty member at other Jesuit institutions, and journalist. He has written over 300 articles on politics, religion, the media, and literature as well as lectures and appears on radio and TV. In his free time he likes to travel, bike, enjoys movies and restaurants. Fr. Schroth has published seven books including his latest, The American Jesuits: A History (2007). A recent review in the Library Journal called it “… a readable overview of the society (that)...fills in the gaps on this subject.” After presenting excerpts from his book and answered questions on Jesuit education, a brief book signing followed. The most memorable moments from Fr. Schroth’s speech were his words to librarians: “Today’s purpose is to honor you….to praise your profession, which is not only holy in the purpose and as fundamental to the intellectual and moral health of society as the priesthood or political leadership, but often superior, in terms of your personal commitment and long term impact of your contributions.” Following this presentation, the group toured the Theresa and Edward O’Toole Library and the 40th anniversary exhibits of the library’s opening. For some, the day ended with a palatial luncheon at Puccini’s Italian restaurant, located nearby. Afterwards others headed back to the O’Toole Library to experience its rededication and re-blessing, followed by a cocktail reception.
