St. Michael The Archangel Parish - Akron at 847 Crouse St, Akron, OH 44306-1125 US - Eparchial Fasting Regulations

Eparchial Fasting Regulations

Eparchial Fasting Regulations Great Fast 2009 Abstinence: The law of abstinence forbids the use of meat, permitting the use of eggs and dairy products. Abstinence is obligatory on all Wednesdays and Fridays during the Great Fast. Strict Abstinence: The law of strict abstinence (fast) forbids the use of meat, eggs and dairy products. Strict abstinence is to be observed on the first day of the Great fast, February 23, 2009 and on Great and Holy Friday, April 10, 2009. Dispensation: Pastors and administrators, for a just cause, may grant to the individual faithful as well as to individual families, dispensation or commutation of abstinence and strict abstinence into other pious practices. Liturgical Directive: In compliance with the norms of the Byzantine Metropolitan Church sui iuris of Pittsburgh, the Divine Liturgy is not to be celebrated from Monday through Friday each week of the great Fast, not on Monday through Wednesday of the Great and Holy Week. The divine office of the Presanctified Gifts may be celebrated on all of those days. On March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation, the norms set forth in the typicon are to be observed. Pastors and administrators are to celebrate the divine office of the Presanctified Gifts at least once a week during the Great Fast and on at least the first three days of the Great and Holy week. In parishes, on days when the divine office of the Presanctified Gifts is not celebrated, other services from our Byzantine Catholic Tradition in keeping with the spirit of the Great Fast are to be scheduled at a time when the Christian faithful may be present. Vestments for services on Sundays of the Great Fast are bright or white in color; red or dark colored vestments are worn on the third Sunday of Great Fast only. This applies to the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in anticipation of Sunday.
