SECOND CHURCH |
In the early 1920s South Bass Island was "found" by various artistic groups of the time, and it became a very desirable place to have a summer home. As the Catholic summer resident population increased, the little Gothic Mother of Sorrows became less suitable for its parisioners. In 1925, fund raising was begun to build a new and larger church to serve the islanders, but more particularly for its summer visitors. The present church land was purchased from various people during the years 1926-1928. Most of the Church is in Put-In-Bay Township, while its south wing and the Parish House are in the Village. The church was begun in 1927. It was built for the grand sum of $60,000. Half of that amount was raised as cash before construction started, and the remaining half was financed. The new church is built of limestone rock quarried from Kelleys Island. The style is Lombard, and the architecture is Romanesque. The church is a smaller copy of one that exists in Lombardy, Italy, and was dedicated in 1928. The architect was Howard Germann. The old wooden church building was razed in 1929 and the property sold.
